        It's the cheat code mentality.

Sure you could play the game from start to finish, but what fun it is to whip out a BFG at lvl one and kill everything in the entire level in one massive explosion.
The people who rely souly on 'cheat codes' are very often the folks that have a mid-life crisis because they've managed to rush their way through all the interesting things and now there's nothing left to do.

If someone wants to sell their character.. fine by me...
If someone wants to bypass all the learning levels and get a high level character to be 'uber' right away... to each their own.

I certainly avoid these people like the plauge (Though I am eager to get that spell at lvl 65.. mmm... plauge...) as they are so very easy to spot.

As far as xxxx sucks, it's not the classes that suck, it's the people that misuse/abuse those classes that suck.

Well, remember that we who might consider ourselves more "real" players or whatever than someone who bought e-bay style are bringing our own baggage to the table, too. Just like the guy who got his toon by buying it may have foolish notions and preconceptions, so can we.

Sounds to me like a guy was asking questions and people jumped all over him. He probably bought the game like we all did -- for some fun and recreation. And maybe he even got it(and his character) as a gift. He said EXPLICITLY that the 200k was a birthday gift. So just because the guy knows nothing, why come down on him for it? What exactly could he be expected to know? Really?

Not fair to unloose an avalanche on a stranger who is just trying to get into the game, has no real conception of the jealousy and anger he may have caused by having access to a character as "uber" (*cough*COUGH*) as an un-epiced 56 druid, and may actually be a nice guy -- at least if he's given a chance to be.

By the way -- there are very few top guilds that don't have plenty of e-bay and/or bots.

Not saying that I would do it or that it's not natural for people to be a bit resentful of the folks that have lots of money and luck(who I am not among) -- just saying let's not jump all over their faces before we even know them. It's easy enough to get verbally or emotionally mugged by real people in real life; we don't do any good by leaping at the opportunity to do it online the first chance we get.

I've considered buying plat on a few occasions, but finally decided that its wrong. (I'm almost always broke, or close to it, from upgrading gear and working on tradeskills....and I want a horse, dagnabbit!)

But I've NEVER considered buying or selling a character. To me, that's absolutely inconceivable.

I have, however, ran into a few people in-game who SHOULD sell their characters, because somebody else would probably do a better job of running them! (When a whole party gets wiped because the Druid doesn't Harmony and spends more time switching out spells than actually casting.....Fortunately, I've only ran into ONE Druid that was incompetent. I've ran into SEVERAL incompetent Bards, however. But Bards are still one of my favorite classes to group with.)

That actually happened in my wife's guild. Guy sold a character, new player picked it up, starting playing. Didn't bowb up badly enough to get kicked, guild actually thought he had turned into a decent person, original owner finds out they like his replacement more, posts on guild boards that he ebayed, character mark 2 got booted from guild.

Sure, they have people make bots, where they might PL a mage to 65 to park in some out of the way place.

But every major guild (Including a few BIG ones) that I have seen has had a strictly NO EBAY stance. It's almost universal.

People sell characters all the time, whether through Ebay or not. I've known of a number of sold characters happily guilded in top guilds. The trick is, do you know and trust the guy who bought the character? If the guy who bought the character is someone in your own guild already, then it's the name of the buyer that counts more than the name of the seller.

And of course, people can change their names now, for a fee.

Bah! The inDUHvidual who posts something as stupid as that deserves to be jumped and bashed. All it takes is a few days of reading through posts to realize how much people resent EBay bought characters. I consider his posts to be rude and arrogant. I have worked hard to get my main to 44 and to have 8k socked away in the bank.

I really dont care whether someone buys their character on Ebay or not. It doesnt lessen my enjoyment of the game any.

I have met too many poor players who made *themselves* that way to think less of someone buying a char and playing poorly.

It doesnt lessen my feeling of accomplishment for the things I have achieved - because frankly I dont put a lot of merit into it.

When I turn off the computer - this ALL goes away. It isnt real accomplishment.

You might want to think about why you feel these people who buy their way in bothers you so much. Perhaps you have invested too much time in a game where *anyone* with enough time can be "uber."

Thats all this game takes- enough time.

How is this different from anything else? What can't be fixed with enough time?

If I spend 6 months working out, and I develop a six pack, perfect tone, and god knows what, is that any less of an accomplishment because it just took "Time"?

If I spend 2 months studying for a Computer Certification, and I pass, does it make it worth any less because I just had to spend some "Time" studying?

EQ is a real hobby, with real accomplishments.

It's just like real life. Anyone with the right determination, time, and knowledge can do well.

It's just a much smaller scale in EQ.

Uber You was a joke. Some members of FoH created it for laughs. There is a thread on their board somewhere about it. They had a site link in it. It was one of the funniest EQ things I have seen.

Also, anyone else get the feeling that this guy is a board troll? It sounds to me like he may not have a 56 druid, or access to 200k at all. He might just be some 12 year old kid who gets his jollies from getting everyone else upset.
