(Warning: Anyone who turns this into a rant against druids is going to make me an EXTREMELY angry guy. So please don't.)

I was over on Eqdruids, which for the most part is a very nice community of some of the more intelligent people to play the class. And one day, in the Equipment section someone posts: (Summarized below, for clarity)

Hi there, I am new to the druid class. I just got a level 56 Druid, and I want to be UBER. I also got 200k for my birthday. What should I buy to be totally UBER?

So a dozen people post, telling him that you can't be uber at 56, and that buying characters is the moral equivelant of killing puppies and sniping at old ladies. The first post gets closed, due to the negativity.

So he posts it again. Gets a little advice, but the same sentiment. I agreed with the majority, and told him that He will not ever be Uber.

Post fades into history, and a week or two later, i see the post title "Can I buy most of my epic if I have lots of plat?" (Summarized below, for clarity)

Hi. I am level 56, and have 200k. I have been told that a lot of the Epic can be MQed, but I have no idea what M means. I have tried to get into so called "Uber" guilds but they say they aren't taking new members, so I feel buying parts is only way.

I scroll down, and someone points out that this is the SAME GUY. I weep, and this just makes me sad.

Why do people like this think they can waltz in and be gods? They want to walk into a game, get the best equipment, and the item that is (or was) supposed to the the culmination of A LOT of work.

And I will mention again. Please dont rant or bash druids. I guarentee you there are Wizards, Clerics, Monks, SKs, and god knows what who have all done this.

This happens not only in our Fantasy World of EQ but also in real life. I have tons of money make me popular. I am not going to say most people but some people want things easily they do not want to work for it. I hope I have not offended anyone but that is how I see it.

Because they can. They do. Is it a wise investment? Not to most folks. Are they derided by the vast majority of the rest of the player population? Yep. Do they care? Not necessarily. I'm sure many, maybe even a significant majority, don't care in the least whether or not we like them or the way they got their characters. Maybe they get their jollies out of a sense of superiority that they so easily acquired something that took the rest of us months or years. Or maybe they've just heard enough to know that the end game raiding play style is all they're interested in, so they want to go straight to that. I'm sure there's all kinds of reasons people buy characters. And I'm sure many are perfectly happy with their purchases.

Now, whether or not it's good for the game or for the rest of us is another story entirely....

Oh, and the whole 200k offer for MQ's and not knowing what an MQ even is... that is classic.

The only time guys like this ever upset me is when they aren't snaring mobs in an EXP group, and they don't know when to heal. So they tend to heal on a pull before I FD, and transfer the Agro I was trying to split etc.

I wanted to Fear kite hoppers in DSP with a druid once, as my monk.
The druid didn't know she could fear animals at level 50... needless to say I was extremely suprised, and nearly dead after trying to tank the Hopper while she healed me til OOM, we ended up zoning, and I disbanded fast.

Anyone else remember "Uber You"? You would pay these guys real world money and they would contract with a guild on your server to take you along on a raid (at the time, that basically meant Fear or Hate or maybe Vox/Naggy) and you would be guaranteed at least one drop.

I can certainly understand the desire by some people to buy a piece of gear on eBay. If you are a busy adult who has 2-3 hours a night once or twice a week to play Everquest you don't have much of a chance of getting thinks that require camping. So you log onto eBay and pay $20 for a pair of Golden Efreeti Boots that you always wanted but could never spend the time to camp. That isn't such a big deal.

Buying a high level character and 200K and expecting to be uber is just stupid.

If you can't get the Breastplate of Super Hooters on your own, and you need it to go to the Plane of Shiny Things, eventually you're going to justify any behavior you adopt in order to get it.

This line made me almost wet myself at work.

For some reason, the "Plane of Shiny Things" struck my funny bone, and I've been giggling since reading that.

Uhm...I'm a busy adult with a nasty work schedule, and there are nights when I have 20 minutes to drop into EQ before work, and half an hour after before I collapse from exhaustion. That's why I started tradeskilling, and with the plat I made, I bought a fair number of things, including a horse and some decent armor.

In fact, it's been 3 weeks today since I moved to Tarew (no armor, no cash, nothing) and thanks to tradeskills, this morning I bought a horse. Almost all of that money was earned tradeskilling, 10-15-20 minutes at a time, not spending hours fighting.

Your mileage as a "busy adult" may vary, especially if you have kids (to name one of the hugely time-consuming parts of our lives that I don't have). Just pointing out it's possible for even the part-timers of us to get some pretty cool stuff.

One small consolation is that after many corpse runs and quite a few ugly disbandings the E-bayers will find their reputation for incompetence precedes them and they will find Norrath a very lonely place.

This line made me almost wet myself at work.

For those who don't know Tweety, she was a fairly regular poster on the Vault boards and had a popular Web column of rants. She was also a Guide and one of her rants was about problems (in the program and with customers). She got dropped from the guide program and banned from the game and it was a big scandal. Anyway, she continued to write rants and such before she got hired by Mythic. She is interviewed quite a bit on the documentary Avatars Offline

Anyway, her rants are really funny, although VERY profane. She doesn't take stupidity lightly. Many of her rants are pretty out of date nowadays (like the tradeskills one), but many are more about social interactions than anything, and are timeless.

And her column entitled "Someone" is something that everyone should read. It has no bad language and is extremely moving. I have it on my home page: "Every single one of you matters, and don't you dare go to sleep tonight or any other night thinking that you don't."
