Since your barb is a chain class (since you want artificer's), I'd honestly lean toward Smithing. Not for the atrificer's, but because of the Tae ew armor.
Tae ew chain tunic and leggings are AWESOME armor for a shaman, and pretty darn good for rogues too (the only chain barbarians I know of).
Plus, sell one piece, and you have enough cash to buy several pieces of arctic wyvern from your local tailor, to fill in those spots where the tae ew isn't so hot.
Yes, unfortunately, this means you'll need to level to 51, not 45. But hoonestly, Tae ew armor is SOOOO much easier than the BD armor to make, You can earn the levels in the time you save.
Also, the shield is pretty nice too
Really, if you're thinking long term, and your character is a metal armor wearing class, you'll want smithing, not tailoring GMed first. Sure Arctic Wyvern is decent armor, but its mostly twink gear these days, with the exception of a few select pieces. Thats of course assuming that your main goal is gearing your own character up, which your post seems to suggest.
Look at the end items that you can make, that are wearable by your characters. Which do you really want?
On the other hand, if you had a druid, or a monk, or an int caster, I'd say tailoring.
