• So how has your server changed?

Ok, think back to what your server was like when you first started playing. Now think what its like. Besides the obvious expansion in territory, and the increase in gear, what has changed?

Personally, I started out my EQ career on the TZ server in the early summer of 2001. Things were fairly simple. The server was generally divided into 2 camps. In camp one known as the "Lighties", there were the Human, Short, and Elven teams. In the other camp, known as the "Darkies" was the Dark team. The two sides were fairly close in number, and the Lighties would still feud with each other. So it was a fairly balanced system. There was a general support of this division. Some people did try to combine the assets of all four teams, or they would group with Darks. Such people were known as Xteamers or 4Teamers and were generally shunned (or killed) by the community at large.

However despite this Roleplay division, people were still quite civil, and would even bend over backwards to help people out from the other side in issues of XP loss and corpse retrevial.

This has all changed now. The practice of XTeaming or 4Teaming has become almost the accepted norm. There are several guilds that try to keep the "Lighty" theme going, but they seem to be continually loosing ground. To make matters worse, most of these Lighty guilds consider any other "lighty" who groups with Darks or other "lightys" who 4 team, to be a 4 teamer, and consequently an enemy. In other words, they have alienated themselves even further. The rest of the server is now no longer divided by teams, but by guilds. The result is now a feudal society.
People have become much less civil. While they used to try to help each other avoid XP loss, many now intentionally try to cause it. In other words, the server has gone to hell. Even the GMs seem to have rinsed their hands of us. The average GM response time has ranged from 10-14 hours lately.

Thats why when Maelin Starpyre opened up I moved. I didnt' move right away. But when about 80% of my friends moved over, I followed.
I had played exclusively on TZ since my second night of starting EQ, so what ensued is best summed up in the words of one of my friends.

It was like stepping out of a war zone, and into an episode of the Brady Bunch
The people on Maelin Starpyre have been so kind and friendly its almost unbelieveable. I have had strangers give me Plat so I could get my JBoots when I turned in the wrong amount of Gold. I have had people drag my body to the zoneline for a rez. I have had people just give free Rezzes. I haven't seen people act like this since the week I started playing on TZ.

So guess what I am asking, how long does this last on the Blue servers? Do people just generally remain sociable? Or do they turn nasty there as well, just maybe a bit slower?

On Brell since I started playing, and it is a very nice society.

I think the blue servers are more civil in general....

Sometimes you run into a Wizard like me who will say stuff like:

"The bazaar bank is just one zone over, perhaps another Wizard is of a more kindly sort."

I think I said that line just yesterday to someone who wanted a free x-loc for a CR from Nexus.

So basically you have thousands of nice people, and a few people like me.

Well, I started a character on Tarew this week.

Was using the Trade Commisoner Henry quest to level to 4, and I ran into a level 29-30 High Elf Wizard. He was at the zoneline from SH to Echo. He asked if I knew the way to fungus grove.

I told him to follow up, and in true Dark Elf fashion, threw jabs at him the whole way. Calling him "Pale Skin", and such. We got to The city, and I showed him the turn in NPC. Out of nowhere, he gave me 10 plat. :-) I thanked him, and explained that I was new to the server.

I had forgotten what a feeling it was to be alone, naked, and level 3 on a new server, and to get a gift from a stranger . He then ran into me back at Trade Commish Henry (I had newbie-gated, thanks to a guard). He said he didn't have any more money, but he gave me an Orc Fang Necklace.

Later, at level 4 , I was in the Shadeweavers end of PC, and some 55-65 shaman was powerleveling his level 3 ranger. Ranger pulled, My pet assited, and I lifetapped. I went from 4-7 in short order. The shaman buffed us, and told me that if ever see his ranger or shaman again, don't hesitate to ask for a group.

It was refreshing.

I don't know that I'd say Karana is like The Brady Bunch exactly, but people certainly aren't out to get one another. Folks usually try to help when they can. There are the beggars who make me long for the ability to PK, and the folks who refuse to do something very simple to help you when in dire need, but that's about the extent of it. Just the other day I was in Wakening hanging out with an ogre sk while he exped on geonids, trading buffs for unrefined gems (without faction hits). Really, good vs evil is irrelevant, except for dealing with npcs. It kind of dulls that atmosphere, of course, but I don't think an improved roleplaying environment really worth the grief, at least not in my book. Other people already have enough ways to irritate me as it is.

Back to the original question, this has changed to a degree from the beginning, but I certainly don't think that Karana was ever anything like you describe on TZ, even in 1999 when I started. I think it's due more to the decline of roleplaying overall, and the phat lewtz, l33t d00d mentality that's more common at the high levels, and proportionally more people being at those high levels. People used to use roleplaying talk more, or would harangue their groupmates about the shortcomings of their race/class/diety, etc, but very, very few people in the early days would ever completely refuse to group with someone because of good/evil alignments. I think it's safe to say that it's nonexistant at the 50+ levels. Really, the only example I can muster of people behaving according to class or race lines is the all-gnome guild. I don't know a lot about them, but I've got the general impression that even they consist of many people who have alts in other guilds, and just play around with the gnomes. The all-female guilds I knew are long gone, as is the all-halfling guild.

Da Troll Patrol

There used to be a guild on Veeshan called Da Troll Patrol, whose requirement was that you be a troll. I grouped up with them, but being a half-elf was never invited to join. I don't know if they are still around anymore though.

E'Ci is a very public-oriented server. There are still public raids for Vox/Naggy/Hate/Fear/PoG/Kael/ToV, various epic mobs, and even some high end raids doing PoP flagging. While there will always be cries of "<insert guild here> ganked our Fear day!", I find most of the server to be helpful and respectful of such things.

I find that a lot of the newer players are not so pleasent as many of the "old school" players. There seems to be a feeling of "expectation" there that I don't much care for.

On the whole, however, I think E'Ci is extremely friendly.

I'm originally from Tarew Marr and left due to the drama and bickering. I even went back last night and watched a nice /ooc battle of the wit-less in PoP.

Tholuxe Paells was a lot friendlier than TM was and I played there for a year or so before I took a break. Came back and it seems the new generation of low to mid 50s are pretty beligerent and downright rude. Before you could ask a simple question or for help and normally get a nice response (even if it was no I can't help you). Now most folks are just flat out jerks.

I'm so glad Shadowbane ships Tuesday. Hopefully the break will do some good.

I'm non guilded on Fennin Ro atm (by choice for once lol), and I would have to say that by and large people are generally nice. The only real problems I have seen is among the top tier guilds. There is the normal rivalry you might expect, but that ranges to downright hatred in some cases. I don't have to worry about it myself since I'm not in any of those guilds, but I have a lot of friends in them and I hear the stories.

I guess my point is, enjoy the low levels, it's still dog eat dog at the top.

Its still pvp but without the artificial barriers opposed by verant in terms of teaming etc we still have pvp but there are a large amount of civil and helpfull people

What you describe is pretty typical. Corpse dragging and rezzes are things I generally help with. Also it can be to your advantage to use /y to yell for help in a tough fight: anyone nearby is likely to help you rather than kill you. But strangers coming along and handing you 1000pp in a wilderness zone far from any bank: that's very unusual. BTW, corpse dragging is not always altruistic... there's a real risk that you'd cause a train trying to come back for your corpse, so people are glad to get you out of there.

When a group is fighting nearby and gets wiped out, we'll generally pause while our cleric rezzes them, and generally hope for the same favor for us if we wipe out. So pay attention to who's around you... but I suppose that's second nature for you.

What you can't expect is any sort of powerleveling, and begging is also frowned on. Not only won't people help you kill things for xp, but they usually won't rebuff you after the rez, and sometimes you don't even get a heal after your rez. Also you generally have to look for people in the same zone, or nearby, to help... they generally won't travel too far out of their way.

You can usually find someone who will haste/clarity/sow/other buff for durations though... not everyone will, but some will. It can sometimes be difficult to find a druid to port you to Dreadlands... but if you can offer 50 pp or more you can probably find one.

People on blue servers may get jaded, to the point that they just ignore you, but they don't turn nasty in the sense of actually causing you harm. If you get in a fight with someone they might try to train your group, or pull from your area, or steal your kills, but that's far from standard practice, and will make them quite unpopular.

Starpyre is a new server, so it's not yet known how much the big guilds will cooperate. On some servers with four or more guilds in the elemental planes, there's a lot of competition and hard feelings, and even active sabotage. On other servers with less competition people are friendlier and will actually leave some of the named mobs up for the other guilds to kill, or set up rotations in popular zones.

Tarrew Marr, is full of extremes. I suppose just like alot of servers.

I have only put two people on my hate/ignore list ever, and I started in june 99. And one of those was just last week.

The vast amount of players are actually helpful and good natured. Its only about 2 to 3percent of the players who are not.

Rodcet Nife seems to be fairly neutral as far as I can tell.

So far I havn't dealt with any greifers other than a friend of mine getting their Lodizal spawn KSed by a druid, though on the flip side most everyone seems mainly interested in taking care of themselves and doesn't lend a hand very often.
My best guess is due to Rodcet being one of the original servers so it's player base is one of the oldest, plus it's never been split so it's also quite crowded, keeping new folks from coming aboard, so everyone's past their 'helping newbies' stages and now just focuses on their own interests... which is fine for me.
(Rodcet Nife also has a tendancy of crashing a lot... which is rather annoying)

I'm from rodcet also. I'd agree with that.
I, a 57 necromancer, playing since 99 on this server have met some very very nice people. and only 1 person made it to my Ignore list and that was because he was v ery annoying and rude.
I try to help those i can, if i am in Paineel getting something and see a young UNTWINKED necromancer, i'll help them with some spell money, maybe an old item i dont want/need but i wont give someone 100plat, mainly because i respect their right to earn it, and that if i just gave it to them it would likely take a lot of fun i had back in their place, away from them.
I'm not going to starta twinking/Anti twink agrument here so dont start it <brings out a big stick>
Rodcet is good server, but if it splits, i'm gone!

I'm whats known as a Test server refugee. I chose to leave the Tarew Marr server to group with a friend who didn't want to leave the Inny server. On the Inny server, being told by a pair of high level wizards or mages that I would want to find a better hunting ground than wisp isle as they proceeded to nuke every thing on that island. I chose the Test server and honestly am quite glad I did.

I started out there with nothing, didn't take long before I was running about with leather armor and a better weapon than rusted, no, I didn't beg (already have ranted about beggers). For the most part on Test at least, it doesn't take long before the test server regulars find you and start dumping stuff off onto you. No this doesn't mean that your going to suddenly be running about in planes armor with uber weapons. Just that on Test, there isn't much of an economy for items. Usually everyone obtains the items they desire for their alts and when they outgrow them, they pass them down or sell them to an npc. Or whats slowly happening, doing the trader bit.

At least at present, the mid 20 - 30's seem to have the most prigs right now. The 2nd plague, the frogs, are what seems to be driving that nastiness at this moment. At the 40-50th level (sorry, highest I've gotten is 57 with my kitty and her pet) haven't seen too many problems as of yet.

Ah well, I've more than rambled on a bit. Take care all and as always, no getting squished.

*hugs*

The Bazaar is swell, but I miss the EC tunnel. Freeport has died the stereotypical "small-town downtown after Walmart opens a superstore" death. It's soooo quiet!

I also made the incorrect presumption that joining a guild would allow comaraderie, healthy grouping and a place to call home. From what I've seen, guilds have become uber-level, uber-snotty, PL-addicted antisocial cliques. I'm hoping that's not all guilds, but the whole system reminds me too much of high school, which I blissfully left behind 23 years ago, and didn't look back upon.

The PoK books are awesome, especially as a melee class. I hated bothering kind souls for ports and such, and it cuts down on the running for 20 minutes to get places.

I also find that when new zones or whatever are added, it makes places that are perenially camped clear out while people go 'tromping on the roses in another garden'. I like this potential to hunt where normally it is too crowded to move.

Anyhoo, I think there's been good changes and changes that made a few more negative human traits pop to the fore.

Good huntin', all!
