When I Least Expected It....

If you have ever attended a raid, you probably have had the opportunity to get yourself first on the hate list of the big, bad boss critter you and your raid were fighting and get your virtual self flattened so fast you had to wait until you returned to your bind point to read through the message box to figure out what hit you.

When you attend such raids, one should expect such a possibility to occur. However, have you ever had a character killed ultra fast when you didn't expect it to happen?

Case in point. My character was travelling through the Skyfire Mountains one fine day, bound for the Burning Woods zone in order to complete a long task. Being buffed with levitation and veil of elements (magician, self only 10 minute guaranteed invisibility spell), I had pointed my avatar in the direction of the zone and turned on autorun. I was reaching the top of a hill when I heard heavy footsteps coming from the other side of the hill. "No problem, just another wurm", I thought.

Then the wurm and I crested the top of the hill at the same time....and time seemd to stop for a moment as I noticed that the "wurm" had bright red scales, was huge, and had wings. Oops.....

Before I realized what was happening, my character was quad hit for insane amounts of damage, but I was still running at full speed on my giant drogmar, running past the dragon. "Hooray, I can get away!", I thought. Ha, fat chance! My character was then feared, which caused him to slowly walk back to Talendor, which resulted in a couple more quick hits and Talendor's kill message, something to the effect of "Just the way I like my adventurers! Extra crispy!". The only cold comfort I got out of this experience is that, upon my forceful return to the Plane of Knowledge, I announced in /ooc that Talendor was up in the Skyfire Mountains, which promptly resulted in some wickedly geared level 68 shadowknight heading over there and tearing Talendor apart.

So here I am, typing this thead as an invitation to you all to share your experiences. Have you ever gotten one of your characters killed in an area where you thought it was safe, when you least expected it?

Fabled Talendor

When I was working my gnomish cultural quests I had to go to Skyfire.
Fabled mobs had just stopped spawning so I figured I did not have to worry about them any longer. So I was blithely nuking and tashing pet attacking to get my drops, feeling smugly superior.

Wham! Keee-RUNCH! LOADING PLEASE WAIT.

Fabled mobs had stopped spawning but unkilled ones were still apparently up and roaming with bad thoughts in mind. Fabled Talendor ate me without so much as buying me dinner or drink.

Once a long long time ago when Velious was the latest thing, I was attending a Temple of Veeshan raid in the Halls of Testing.

In those bygone days, Eye of Zomm type spells had several odd "features". Number 1, they drew aggro (all pets in those days drew aggro actually). Number 2 if you cast them into a wall they popped out somewhere else in the zone totally at random.

Also in those days, wizards only had like 2 conjuration spells so it was very difficult for us to raise that skill.

So here I am in HoT... this was a difficult raid for us at the time so our pull team was being very careful and we had a lot of down time. Having a bard in my group, I decided to get a little conjuration practice in... so I went over in a corner so I wouldn't bother anyone (veterans will see where this is going).

Happily I cast Eye of Zomm over and over again gaining a few points of conjuration until I happened to step forward a bit too far into the corner and old Zommy went into the wall.

Well imagine my surprise when he popped out right at the feet of Dozekar who proceeded to warp onto me and wipe the entire raid in about 20 seconds.

We Eye of Zomm'd in Velk's one day through the wall. It popped at Velk's feet in his room. Imagine the suprise the ZI group had when Velk and his guards cam rampaging through.

Once a long long time ago when Velious was the latest thing

Funny that you mention this, Qaladar. That statement jogged a really old memory I have of EverQuest. The proceeding incident I am about to outline took place when EverQuest itself was the latest thing, during the early months of the year 2000, which is when I started playing this game.

My magician character was about level 8 or so at the time, and I had joined up with a group of similarly levelled characters and were hunting at the good old "orc camp 1" in the East Commonlands. Things were going fine until the puller brought back more than we could handle. I panicked and, along with a necromancer from the party, we ran a distance away from the battle as the remaining group members fought the gang of orcs in vain.

"You see those guys? They're going to die.", I typed out in /say, for the benefit of the necromancer who had stopped alongside of me to watch the doomed battle.

I had just hit the "Enter" key to /say that message, when my character was clawed in the back by that lovely griffon that wanders that zone, and was killed. Looks as though the joke was on me.



On a side note, roughly a week ago my neice was running my main character while shrouded as a level 55 berserker basilisk in that zone. While there, we found not one, but three griffons! Needless to say, they were all dispatched with relative ease with that shroud form. Oh yes, revenge is sweet!

Kizdean Gix in West Commonlands used to kill me a lot when I would xp there. Now I go and kill him every tume I run past him.

My first trip to Wakening Lands when that expansion first came out. We were trying to get to Skyshrine (mage hubby and I to kill) when we were in our 40's?

All I heard from hubby was "run". A second later, I was rooted and a couple seconds later "zoning please wait ..." I had been rooted backwards by that dragon and never even got to see her before she killed me.

I had the time wandering around exploring when I was just a 16 warrior kitten and nobody had told me about Kithicor at night... I found out the hard way. Wandering through with no mobs in sight and then instantly being warped in front of a named undead that proceeded to kill me in one blow. Being back before the days of the guild hall I got to spend the next few hours trying to find a necro to summon me.

This wasn't by a mob, but when running a mule around PoK who's slightly overweight and I completely forget about how much damage you take when jumping off the decks. Then SPLAT my poor little mule takes like 40hp of damage and looks like roadkill. That's also the about the time i discover that i never bothered to rebind in PoK and have to trek through two felwithes and gfay to get back.

I've been splatted a few times. The first was Kizdean Gix (as it was for many); the most recent was just 3 weeks ago in Cobalt Scar. I (70 warrior) was farming Haunted Seachests, primarily for Crushed Diamond dusts.

You tend to get a lot of adds - sharks, barracudas and sirens, and it gets tiresome dealing with them. Since the 'next' target might very well be behind me, and since I didn't want to keep turning around, I had gotten in the habit of just hitting F8 and attack as soon as one mob died, so that I could just kill the nearest one in front of me.

I should note first of all that I have moderate Dragon faction - enough not to be KoS to all the mobs in CS that are on those factions.

I should also note that while I was aware of who Kelorek Dar was, I had never actually laid eyes on him and in the back of my mind I guess had always assumed that he was big. I didn't expect him to be more or less barracuda size.

Anyway, you can guess the rest. I didn't actually splat and even, for a brief moment, had some hope that I might have a chance, but his dd proc is evidently unresistable and I was gone in short order.

When I first started EQ I had a young character running through Butcherblock Mountains (this was after Kunark and Velious but before Luclin). I didn't know much about the game yet and had recently stopped playing Ultima Online. The one thing I didn't like about UO was the PKing (player-killing). I didn't know how it worked in EQ, but I knew you couldn't just run up and kill any other player.

Back to my young character. I was somewhat familiar with BB and what mobs were in there. It's a pretty easy place to level up a new character.

Suddenly, I saw an ogre and it started running after me. I figured it was just another character. I'd never seen an ogre in BB before.

I continuted on my way but the ugly thing caught up to me. And proceeded to start pounding on me!

I'm thinking, "Hey! Stop that! What do you think you're doing? *HOW* are you doing what you're doing? You're not supposed to be able to PK like this!"

I made an effort to reach the guards but it was no use.

When I reloaded and made my way back to BB, I was outraged. How could such a thing happen? After a brief discussion in /ooc I found out that yes, ogres *do* spawn in BB, though it is very rare. I think there's a pair of them that appear once in a while.

I've seen them both since then, but only a couple of times. Once was with my enchanter and I took great pleasure and glee in charming the ugly SOB and making him do my every command!

I've been killed, quite to my surprise, many times running around in wolf form. Docks in FV and Iceclad, and in Everfrost around Halas. I never really understood why the residents of FV don't like wolf form either. /shrug

I've also died in the lava in Sol A, been dragged underwater by the boat in Erud's Crossing, and fallen into the Hole.

My frist real "surprise death" came back just before Velious came out. I was fairly new to the game and was running through WK on my way back to Qeynos when out of nowhere, something starts attacking me. I spun around to see what it was, and never did see anything around. I never did see anything around me, but the target indicated that it was a werewolf that killed me. I was a little nervous about going into WK for a long time after that.

About two months ago, on our last (and hopefully, our final) Time run, we were happily dispatching the monsters of phase three, and having our piggybacks start zoning in for quintessences, when the inevitable "rez plz" welled up. Our rogues went out to the edges of the lava leap, but didn't find the body.

"Where _did_ you die?" they asked the chanter in question.

"Time A. . ."

A piggybacked cleric located the corpse underneath the nearest lost traveler, still in wolf form. "Didn't you know about that? Wolves are aggro in Time," said the cleric (who moonlights as a druid). The chanter explained, sheepishly, that he'd forgotten about just having bought Persistent Illusion.
