Even if he did put the right materials in, his success rate at 21 skill would only be around 60%, so 1 for 3 or 4 is reasonable.

At skill level 196 in pottery, I had all the components to make 5 artisan seals.
Jewelcraft at 144, all combines for the mounted gems succeeded. At 196 pottery, all 5 attempts at the unfired seals succeeded, with 1 failure on firing the things. Quite a loss in PP without even having a chance at getting the trophy off of it.

My combines in for the Brewing Tropy were 3 fails, and finally a success on the last one and with no PP left in the bank. Whew!!!!

When you are 250 in brewing, and not high enough to easliy get AAs to
GM more than 1, hitting the 217 skill in both Jewelcraft and Pottery is not
      possible.

Thank you VERY MUCH Twist. Now it's off to AS to go do jewlcraft freebie combines. I think I can live with a 5% fail rate.

Really? Wow, I've never heard of that happening. The RNG must really hate paladins - best give up now.

Um, I'm reasonably sure Tanker said at the last Fan Faire that all combines of trivial 15 or less are automatically no-fail. It has to do with the way the game stores and processes the trivials.

I'm also sure that silk thread is a no-fail combine, especially when I've raised several toons' tailoring skills using it and have never failed once. I assume you're discussing failing them a LONG time ago?

At risk of putting words in your mouth, I would venture a guess that you were combining 3 threads for a silk cord rather than silk thread. I can never remember failing silk thread from Kunark on...but I guess I could have been really lucky.

Naw, it was silk thread... My paladin only existed back when I did Fine Steel armor the first time, and hunted spiderling specifically for paddings.

Well, for an update, I now have my Artisan's Seal.

I went to AS and did all the jewlcraft newbie quests then sacrificed my firstborn video card to appease the RNG gods. Then I went to Cabillis to do the combine for my mounted gems.

After succeeding and emboldened by my success I then went to the potter's wheel with the gems, the vial, and the block of clay. Fortunatly I had already done some pottery previously (vial of velium vapors is a cheap gate for this monk who doesn't have OoW, the cash for gate potions, or the last part for my clickie gate necklace) and had a pottery skill over 100 (for some reason, I thought that a skill over 100 is better than under 100 even if item is trivialed by a significant amount). So I had my unfired seal. Knowing that good things run in threes, I mumbled a prayer to ward off Murphy, picked up a HQ firing sheet, and went to the kiln. When all was said and done, I emerged with an intact Artisan's Seal!

Now I have it banked and am too scared to try to use it to get my trophy just yet. Wanting to the the Baking Mastery AA's so I have less chance of failure, plus possibly Scavenger so I might be able to save the seal.
