  • Did you know that mounted gems are NOT nofail?

Okay, I've finally worked up my tradeskilling to the point where I am trying to make an artisan's seal. I got the gems from a very nice lady I grouped in a LDoN with. So, to get this seal, I need to mount 'em, eh? Well, I certainly don't want to fail on THIS, so why don't I send it over to my mage toon with an int of 255. Sure, his jewlcraft is only 21, but the thing trivs at 15, so he will already have it trived, and an int of 255 is one heck of a lot better than my wis of 240. Hmmmm.... let's look at that recipie...

1 gem (black saphire, blue diamond, diamond, and Jacinth)
    2 bars of velium.

So I head on over to PoK, where everyone knows that everything can be found. Nope, not there. So I ask my guildies, who tell me that it's only found in the Velious cities. Okaaay... time to make a stop over at Thurgadin. I know plat bars are 100pp each, they're probably not going to be too expensive, right? like 150-200? I get to the jewlcraft and the fun begins.... 265pp EACH?!?!? Stupid dwarves and their monopolies. Okay, so I forked over the cash. There, ya happy? Good, now put it in shared bank slot for the mage to do the combine, I do not want to fail on this one.

Okay, let's start with the BD. Done, no problems. Now let's try the Jacinth. Easy shmeasy. Okay, now for the black saphire. Wait... where's my gem at? NOOOOOOOooooooooooooo that dreaded message appears on my screen 'You lack the skill to fashion this item'.

If it's this bad just trying to get the gems mounted, I'm almost afraid to try for the seal... all that money... /twitch, /twitch...

Umm, you do know that a skill of 21 versus a trivial of 15 isn't even close to the max probability right? So you were just assuming that if the trivial is 15 = no fail? /wince

Intel and wisdom (or any other stat) doesn't matter at all when it comes to success.. only your skill level does. Getting 2 of the combines out of 3 to succede, at a 21 skill level.. i'd say was exceptionally lucky.

They are sucky combines to fail... especially the jacinth.

I believe that 200 over the trivial things do indeed become no fail. Before that, you always have a chance to fail. It decreases as you go higher over the trivial, but the chance is *always* there.

Sympathies. I failed the same combine once with a JC just under 200. It's frustrating, but at least I can console myself I wasn't messing with truly expensive components like some of the PoP tailoring.

So what skill should I be at to have the maximum possibility of success without using AA?

200 points above trivial is no fail So for a 15 trivial, you need 215 for no fail.

                hmmm.

Generally any items with triv of 15 are considered No Fail.

Oooo. now i understand. Mounted Gems are actually triv 16. 1 over the no fail limit. So it is Very possible to fail them especially if you only have a skill level of 21

15 has kind of been 'secret code' for no-fail. Lots of quest combines have been 'proven' to be no fail but have a triv of 15 (Many thousands of players and twinks have skilled-up Smithing(1) by combining the 9 items for the Earring of the Solstice.)

You would not be out of line to assume something very simple or quest-y with a triv of 15 is no-fail. Anything besides 15 is suspect of course. =)

Yep, silk thread is trivial 15 and who here can remember failing that combine?

However mounted gems are trivial 16 not 15, as are all the combines for the artisans seal. That one trivial point makes all the difference.

BTW, here's the breakpoints for success rates (of a trivial 16 item):

                      95.00% at 56-65
                      97.25% at 66-115
                      98.50% at 116-165
                      99.75% at 166-215
                      100.00% at 216+

wait... so if there is a traderskill trivial over 20 than there is always a chance to fail?

Are you sure you put 2 bars of velium into the bag? If you only put one bar in, then you're making a very different item (something I did myself the first time dang it.) The trivial is very high for them.
