I haven't seen any other SOE posts on Monkly Business for quite some time, but my readership of that board dropped off as well, so perhaps that's to blame.

Anyhow, realistically SOE can't let itself be seen as a corporation which supports those who violate its policies and license agreements. I wonder how they manage to still post there, or if the devs in question simply went with the "They didn't tell me not to. Then again, I didn't ask either and dodged all suspicious memos"-concept.

        2) Many people don't like Yantis' business, period. While people don't seem to mind breaking the EULA in general and seem to think nothing of it, the "Ebayer" subcategory seems to generally be despised.
If people don't like his business, then just don't buy from him, thats whats going to really hurt him.

EQDruids, and EQBeastlord were both acquired by everyone's favorite platinum salesman. From what I've seen on EQDruids the main sites appear to have been transformed into some hideous creation. Both Message Boards continue to be run by the previous admins, and the new owner is claiming he won't interfere.
What would you prefer, the sites just disappear ?

One advert on the front page of eq.beastlord does not constitute a "hideous creation".

The new owner also owns Monkly Bus, and he has not stepped in on that website .....

Check the front page of eqdruids.com -- THAT is hideous. Tons of links to RPGExpert articles, half of which describe exploits. I can live with a single banner ad that doesn't have to be clicked if it keeps sites going, I can't live with what was done at eqdruids, or with the amazingly heavy moderation taking place at all the boards taken over.

It also simply disturbs me that he is making such a full court press. What’s his gameplan here? He’s going after the ones that are ‘obviously’ named – eq druids; eq beastlords; eq classes (necro board) but also those you’d have to know about – steelwarriors, shaman’s crucible, ranger’s glade etc. SOE is very unlikely to post at the boards he controls, so all classes risk loss of communication – does that benefit him in some unforeseen way? Is he simply hoping to push SOE into buying him off? Further, the boards are ones ‘newcomers’ to either the game in general or more particularly to game-related boards are likely to stumble upon early in their hunt for information. (I’ve noticed that a surprisingly small percentage of the gaming population regularly visit class boards, most people I speak with never do, especially real newbies). They are likely to be mistakenly persuaded that this is acceptable, and buy plat or accounts casually, or much worse, use the posted exploits. (I don’t actually have any issue with the purchase of plat or accounts in principle, my only issue is with the plat or character being ‘acquired’ by Yantis via exploits or macros, but opinions may differ here).

              http://forums.interealms.com/shaman/...threadid=18818

Is the decision thread on the shaman board.

              http://forums.interealms.com/shaman/...threadid=18794

              Is the discussion of same.

              http://www.shadowknight.org/forums/s...threadid=19228

Is a discussion about someone being stupid enough to pay money for the SK board, as well as some SK commentary (in typical SK form - not for the easily offended IOW) on the ranger and shaman decision. Sunmoon used to host SKO you see.

The SK thread also has the ranger threads linked.

You might want to make a difference between "buying" and "sponsoring". For example the deal with the necro board is that the staff remains the same, the rules remain the same and only change will be a banner on the main site.
No ownership or power is transfered.

For me it's like tobacco advertisement on F1 racing cars.

Anyway, still staying by the necro board's example the admin did put up a Pay Pal link and simply didn't get the cash to keep the board afloat.

                He could have:

A: given up and pull the plug

B: keep on paying from his own pocket (would you? could you?)

C: be like the /gu comics site and make money out of related artwork (which is hard without basic things like talent)

                D: get sponsors

The person of the sponsor is unfortunate but who else is out there interested in EQ related advertisement and willing to keep the message board intact without imposing new rules? Apperently there was no one.

PS: this is my own point of view of course, I'm not a member of the necro board's staff and was never in contact or related to the new sponsor.

As I said, I think the forums are run seperately from the main site. They had a couple devs post on there at the beginning of the combat changes. And one was a bit involved in the monk lull discussion.

                    Suma,

Are you sure you're a necro? In comparison to average necro one reads on The Necromancer, you're like....nice and stuff. =)

you are also in public. in a dark ally he would stab you in the back, rip out your heart, desecrate your elf (assuming elf) body, and then eat your soul.

only when he can get away with it though. no de would get caught doing anything.

Oh such a mislead child, how could you believe such rumors?

We, the Teir'Dal people, are working hard to overcome the stigma of our ancestors and thriving to become part of the Norrathian society.....for the greater glory of Innoruuk of course!

I'd rather have Yantis buy a board and have it basically exist in the same manner, than have it no longer exist at all.

This is kind of a goofy moral issue to some people. I find morality to be subjective and I guess that my "webboard morality" is pretty low on the index, since frankly it is such an incredibly trivial thing.

If this board was the same and had some yantis' naughty site add at the top, or even the entire EQ trader's site, I could also care less. It makes absolutely zero difference to me (as long as it was ran by the same people, who'd no longer have to worry about donations.)

Yantis and other sites like that are really not my business, they are SOE's business and SOE has shown that they are not going to do anything about it. If SOE is doing nothing about it, why should I? I'll go to the board anyway, I don't care if Yantis views that as him being more successful since I'm not going to shop at his site anyway. If he wants to be an idiot with his money, the best way to get back at him is to make him waste it.

I think the REAL problem is the fact that a board, which is something of a hobby, gets so popular that it then needs some source of outside cash to stay up. If you can get the donations, that works but a lot of us just don't have the excess cash. At that point all I care about is the board still existing, whether it has a Yantis ad on it or a porn one. I just don't care.
