  • Rng, Rng..

No, this is not a rant about the RNG.
This is a rant about the people ranting about the RNG!

Ok.. I guess this is a pet peeve of mine, but why are people acting like a RNG is exclusive to EQ, or even exclusive to EQ tradeskills!?

A RNG isn't an entity, it's just randomness, luck and back luck! It's just everywhere..
Do you go whining about how the RNG is hating you today when you have more fizzle than usual, or more resists? Or when the roll on an item you really wanted? No, then why do you do so when it's about skill-ups on tradeskills? They are the exact same mechanical!
Do you go praising the RNG when you have lots of consecutive crits? When you win a roll? Nope.. you just say maybe "Wow, I have nie luck today!".

And it's not just EQ either.. a RNG is just the command for having one chance on x of event happening..
    IF Randomx > y
    THEN ...
    ELSE...

ALL RPGs use RNGs, and other games do too.. heck, even a lot of calculator have a RNG function!

"The RNG" just represents randomness.. our lifes are full of randomness, everywhere. Why deal with it diffrently when talking about this particuliar subject?

Actually yes, I say the RNG is treating me well when I have a bunch of crit heals, or badly if I lose a roll. You see, the RNG is not really a program designed to generate random numbers. It is actually an evil little imp who lives inside SOE's servers and loves to torture tradeskillers in particular He has other important jobs as well, such as making sure Pyronis drops the 1 millionth pair of chain gaunts instead of a GRC orb, or coordinating your linkdeaths to make absolutely sure you die. Rumor has it, however, that he can be appeased by sacrificing many stacks of tailoring components and/or possibly gnomes

I must respectfully disagree with you here. The RNG is not just some harmless algorithm designed to simulate randomness in the EQ world.

        The RNG is evil.

I speak the truth, my friends. EverQuest's Random Number Generator of Doom was coded by Innoruuk himself. Its only purpose is to make you Hate. It can read your mind. It knows what you want and it knows exactly what it needs to do to keep you from getting it. Want to skill up on Solstice Robes? The RNG will make sure you succeed every single time you hit combine. Want to actually make a Solstice Robe because you need it? The RNG will cackle gleefully as you burn through two bags of silks.

Of course you are correct when you say that it's not exclusive to tradeskills. Its evil can be seen everywhere. I once found myself in a terrible situation. Pet dead, mob beating on me... I tried to gate. Fizzle. Tried again. Interrupted. Tried again! Regained my concentration but the gate was too unstable! Tried one last time. Regained my concentration. LOADING, PLEASE WAIT... Found myself at my bind point naked

Make no mistake. The RNG is the embodiment of hate itself. It lives, it breathes, it steals your sanity one "random" event at a time.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

              RNG hijack

That animation is *really* odd, Saleani. I've seen some odd stuff on the web, but that's up there.

/em crams brain back inside skull

As for the RNG, I'm just a humble tradeskiller, nowhere near the high end of stuff, and I will occasionally growl at the RNG. Yes, it is a randomizer function, but every once in a while it seems like it was actually coded to be aware of just how much you wanted to succeed at any particular thing, and then smite you for even daring to want that success. =P

What else ya gonna do about something ya can't "fix"? Bend over, take it up the tailpipe, and then...complain. That's the only thing that helps when ya know ya gotta bend over again in a couple seconds

I think a large part of why you see complaints about the RNG in regards to tradeskills and never anything else: Have you ever lost a pricey component due to not making a crit? Has a fizzle ever cost you several thousand platinum?

You're telling this to the ranger who's more than once tanked in planar pick up groups?

The RNG is definately ebil. I became convinced of that after 603 combines without a skill up. Yes, 603. I never want to see another opal encrusted stein in my life. My druid still sets at 205 pottery, when I started keeping count on combines to skill ups. 590 opal stein combines, 10 golden idol combines, and 3 faithstones combines later, my druid still sits at 205.

Let me add the RNG was beng even more so during these combines. I only had 3 failures the entire time, and that on opal steins.
