now Cigar, that poor waitress was trying to take good care of you'all. you of course couldnt want a drink with no ice in it, what sane person would do that. and who in thier right mind could ever pass up dessert? it just isnt done.

my best friend back when i worked for IRS (dont shoot me i dont work there anymore) grew up in Burma. her first job as a waitress was at a soda shop(yes she was a lot older than i am ) and these ladies ordered ice cream sodas. she was very proud of herslef that she had gotten the correct dish of ice cream with the correct drink for each lady. when they laughingly informed her that the ice cream went INTO the soda, she was appalled.

life is a funny business. enjoy the show.

I don't care about ice one way or another myself - it was my buddy Chris - he's got a problem that makes him prone to swallowing the icecubes if he drinks from the glass itself while using a straw sometimes causes him to get the fluid down the wrong pipe.

and who in thier right mind could ever pass up dessert? it just isnt done.
Diabetics who go into shock and start thrashing around on the floor like a fresh caught flounder - but hey, what's a few thrashes and a trip to the hospital compared to desert, eh?

Shooting is WAY too humane for IRS employees - we prefer something nastier around my area - like making them GM smithing or tailoring.

Ahh, but that's just a cultural thing - not a crazy person.

For example, when we have our traditional Sunday night rib dinner at Corkeys at the end of the convention, I always order a small bowl of warm water with a shot of lemon juice in it. This without failure perplexes the waiter/waitress so I explain that I'm going to use it as a finger bowl since it's been my XP that doing so is far superior to those wetnaps they give you to clean up with.

Without failure, it takes two or three tries for the server to grasp the concept of "small bowl of warm water with lemon juice" - I've been served lemonade in a bowl, tea with lemon, diced lemon boiled as a soup, chicken broth with lemon slices in it - Americans just aren't used to the concept of a finger bowl - it's as alien to them as icecream floats were to your friend.

All this time I thought the finger bowl was a southern thing... The best bar b que ribs Ive had have been made in places that boast their 'southern' way of cooking and Ive most always been offered a finger bowl. The few times I wasnt offered a finger bowl it was just a regular napkin, only place Ive ever gotten a wet nap is KFC lol

Steak and Shake is just these two places without the junk hanging on the walls and ceiling.
I believe the correct term is "flair."

Fret not - I know sarcasim and whatnot.

As for being a GM smith and working on tailoring - I take no responsibility for your masochistic tendancies - please also recall that what used to be considered midevil torture devices are now called fitness devices and people pay to have them used on themselves - hot wax anyone?

And no, Cantatus, the correct word is most certainly "junk" - it's only flair if I was the one who thought the junk looked tasteful on the wall.

It is for watresses like this that I have perfected a neat trick. It requires that the table have plastic menus available to you at the end of the meal and that the tablecloth be plastic or no tablecloth at all.

Take your water glass, put the tip in it (a loonie would be perfect). Put plasic menu on top of glass, and press firmly. Flip glass so that it is resting upside down on the menu on the table with coin inside. Now remove menu. One glass, upside down, with the tip inside of it, full of water.

The expressions are priceless... and a clear way to inform the waitress of your opinion of her performance.

What is even better is watching the waitress try and figure out how to get the coin out without getting water all over the place

Any waiter/waitress who has worked for more than a week knows this trick. Sadly, the wait staff often has to suffer due to incompetance in the back of the house, so even decent servers will get POed customers (although the above examples of idiot servers are priceless).

"No, I didn't notice that the cook put too much mayo on your hamburger. I will take that right back."

"No, I didn't cut into your steak to check that there was no pink inside."

"No, I didn't notice that the breaded cutlet under the marinara sauce and parmesan cheese was actually veal and not chicken."

Heck, in many restaurants nowadays, your food isn't even brought out by the person who took your order. The server has no idea that you asked to substitute snow peas for green peppers and the chef decided to ignore that on the ticket.

If you want to learn more about the kinds of things that a professional waitress deals with, check out Waiting: The True Confessions of a Waitress by Debra Ginsberg. A very enlightening and entertaining book for anyone who has ever worked as a server, or even just eats out.

Oh, and the way to deal with an upside down glass of water? Put a bus tray under the edge of the table and just scoot the glass off the edge into the tub. If the coin inside is worth it (and a Loonie is like US$1.50 right?) then you can just pick it out. Waiters get stiffed completely by even satisfied customers too often to see anything unusual in this "trick."

                      Loonies

Actually, loonies are worth about $0.65 US. If any of you guys need some send me money and I'll be happy to exchange loonies for $1 US. *snicker*

When the Sakajahwea coins first came out, my buddy Herb used to joke with folks and tell them that the new US $1 coin was going to be the Canadian $2 loonie coin due to the lousy exchange rates at the time.

I'm pretty sure a loonie is a CAN$1 coin and a toonie is a CAN$2 coin. I had a friend who used to constantly joke about those.

(sung to the Tiny Toons theme song)

                              It's Canadian,
                              It's a toonie,
                              or maybe it's a loonie,
but the exchange rate is so screwy,
                              does anyone really care?

I have had a couple of loony-toons (no pun intended) for waitresses over the years, but nothing even remotely close to yours. On a side note-diabetics do not go into convulsions from eating sugar-they can go into a coma if their sugar level gets too HIGH, but I mean WAAAY too high, not from having dessert, and it takes anywhere from a few days to a few months for that to happen. It is actually too many CARBOHYDRATES that drive up their Glucose level-and bread is a more likely culprit than ice cream. What can send a diabetic into a diabetic seizure, is a LOW glucose level-and the remedy is Carbohydrates in a concentrated, quickly metabolized form. The 'rescue food' of recommendation by a lot of diabetic educators is cake icing-those little tubes you buy to write someones' name on a cake with, or orange juice, sugar cubes,-anything that is practically pure sugar and can be dissolved quickly, as someone having a seizure can choke easily- juice is only if they are still awake and can swallow.
I do not mean this as a lecture, but a LOT of people do not know how diabetes works-it was certainly an eye-opener for me when my brother developed it. Diabetics have to watch their CARB intake VERRRY closely, but sugar is actually not off-limits.

                                /lecture off
