  • A possible Info saving tip for House ogre

    Hey House Ogre,

    If the HD is unbootable in your computer now that it blew try the following:

    1) get a new HD and reload the OS on it.
    2) while the OS is loading on the new HD put old HD in a bag and toss it in the freezer
    3) after OS is totally loaded on new HD create a folder for the old HD info
    4) connect the old HD to the IDE or SCSI chain and reboot.
    5) Select all info from the Old HD and copy it to the New HD.

    This may sound odd but it is how I and several folks I know have been able to recover vital info off drives that went south.

    Hope this helps

    Just make sure you don't have a freezer like mine that gets tons of ice on everything, even sealed items.
    Hope you get your puter fixed soon!!!

        You only need to leave it in the Freezer for like 20min... And for your sake Ngreth I hope only the power supply lost the magic smoke (magic smoke makes all electric stuff run... once it gets out nothing works right again). If it was a spike that hit the PS then we are talking total system loss... Sigh Hope it stopped at the PS man!

          Was just the power supply, thankfully. House Ogre's done enough tech support and computer building in the past that we're pretty good about making sure everything's surge-protected, UPS'ed and the like. Normally, if something's going to go wrong computer-wise, it happens to me. Seems I used up a couple lifetimes of computer karma trying to cobble together a network of souped-up PS2-286s for a university library back in the old days, and am working on negative computer karma now. All I have to do is look at something crosseyed (easy enough with some of the redhead days I've had lately) and it will stop working for no apparent reason ... everyone, and I mean everyone, will sit there and scratch their heads, as there's *nothing* they can find wrong with the machine, or with how I am operating it, but things just simply whack out when I need them the most. {shrugflail}

            Well glad to hear it! Good Luck to both of you Den Mom and House Ogre. BTW I just wanted to say THANK YOU to both of you for keeping this site up and going. I know that it is an act of love and I (Along with my guild and the entire Tradeskill community) REALLY REALLY (continue till the paint wears off the r e a l y keys) appreciate all that the both of you have done.

            Heres offering you some of my good computer karma to repay your bad karma Den Mom!!!

            Thanks

              It was just the Power Supply. No harm seems to be done to the computer that I can tell.

              The power supply "rattled" when I disconnected it... so it WAAAYYY died...

              I am up and going with no loss of data... but have been having some permissions issues that have kept me from migrating the data between servers.
