  • So you want to learn to fish....

(This is a fishing guide I'm working on that I'm going to post on my guild's message board. Its a work in progress, but I'd like some opinions or suggestions, please.)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Fishing

First of all, let me start off by saying that I think EVERYONE should take up Fishing. It'll give you something to do when you run out of mana or you're injured and have to rest to heal or you're LFG and there's water nearby. (Yes, you CAN fish while sitting. There's just not any animation if you do that)

Why should you take up fishing? Well, its very simple: 1. You can actually eat the fish as is, without having to cook it. A few coppers for one meal is cheap! 2. You can make a small profit by reselling any rusty daggers, fish scales and tattered sandals you catch to vendors (or use the Fish Scales yourself if you can cast Enduring Breath). 3. Go to the Bazaar and look and see how much Blessed Fishing Rods and Saltwater Seaweed sell for. I rest my case.

    Getting started.

First of all, go buy a fishing pole and some bait, and find some water. (If you're in Qeynos, make sure you're at the docks, not the Pally and Cleric guild!) Equip the fishing pole, hit the Fishing button (or make one, if you haven't already) and wait.

With low skill, you may lose bait and your fishing pole may break. But both are cheap, so don't give up.

When your skill is high enough, you can catch special zone-specific fish and items. (If you catch a fish and its not "Fresh Fish", then you have a zone-specific fish!)

After your skill hits 50 or so, if you're not evil, head to Butcherblock and hop at the boat. When the boat stops at an island with an NPC named Zachariah Reigh standing on the docks, get off the boat.

On this island are a few shops of interest. One of them carries fishing poles, bait, hooks for making lures, and tackle boxes. Buy as much bait as you feel like using, but make sure you have enough left for a tackle box. (hooks too, if you want, but I never use them)

Fish here until you get bored, run out of money, or hit whatever skill point you're aiming for. Keep any Gunthak Mackerel and Saltwater Seaweed you catch, but sell anything else, if you like. And buy a tackle box before you leave.

Now, what to do with the Gunthak Mackerel and the Saltwater Seaweed....

Well, unless you're a Brewer or know someone who is, sell the Saltwater Seaweed in the Bazaar. Its used to make temper for Freeport human cultural items. As for the Gunthak Mackerel, put them in the bank and go buy a skinning knife in the Bazaar or find someone who will make one for you, unless you can do it yourself. You can combine the Gunthak Mackerel with the skinning knife in the tackle box I told you to buy and you will end up with 5 fishing bait.

There are zone specific fish in a lot of zones, including several of the starting cities, and they all have different uses. Some are used for Brewing and some for Baking. You can even make food out of some of the fish you catch by combining them in the tackle box with a fillet knife (again, player-made), a root (you can forage these or buy them from someone who can), and celandine (bought from an alchemy vendor), but you need VERY high skill to do this. (They all trivial in the 170's to 180's)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's what I've got written so far. I need to add more info, and I'm not sure if I should mention the Nightmare and Valor fish or the fishing lures or not. (To me, the lures are a waste of time and the spiderling silks needed to make the silk threads are better used for other things)

    It's a nice guide

    A couple of comments:

    1) a big advantage of fishing is you can just sit and relax and still be "achieving" something. I've converted a couple of people into fishing by dragging them to PoT to fish and watch the sunset.

    2) If you are a beginning fisher, I would highly recommend fishing someplace where you have a vendor selling bait and poles right by you ... it cuts down on frustration no end. I would include a couple of safe places like this in your guide.

    3) Examples of the fish that sell (you mention seaweed) and who to would probably encourage those in it for the cash. Also you give tips about filleting, probably worth citing where you can get fish that can be prepared to make high quality bones. Certainly a link to the zone specific fish page here (which states what each is used for)

    4) Tell them about the fisherman's companion. Yeah, you need to be 46 and fishing in PoN is daunting, but I'm consistantly surprised at how many high level fishers do not know that they can avoid the trauma of broken rods for the rest of their fishing career.

    [edit]

    5) Yeah, I agree, I'd leave out the lures. If they catch the obsession, they'll end up looking things up and seeing what all they can do, but I'm not sure it's sensible in a beginners guide.

Gunthak is a great place for your first fishing expedition. Poles and bait are readily available in the lighthouse and there are 4 varieties of zone specific fish. You can also quite easily catch enough fish here to pay for all poles and bait and some extra to put in your pocket.

I've used this to get a couple of new fishiermen into the hobby myself.

Nice guide As Faymar already mentioned
        can just sit
perhaps maybe emphasize this a bit more as its a great way to med and fish at the same time. Also, you can be invis'd as well.

        Just my 2 coppers worth.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Like I said, its a work in progress.

As for the Fisherman's Companion......there are a few people in my guild who can go fish for Nightmare Cichlid. Its the Valorian Discus that would be hard to come by. (I already have a Fisherman's Companion, by the way )

Ummmm.... fishing in Valor is completely safe.

            Ah, you mean the flag.

You know, I often run into fishers in PoT ... I'm willing to bet that if y ou asked them for fish from Valor, they would shift over. Certainly I would.

Not sure what other options there are

Might want to add to getting the prepared fillets that the fishbones you get as a byproduct (unless, like me, you're after the bones not the fillets) can be used by a skilled fletcher to make fishbone darts which are good for monks. Figure it would be sad to see someone spent money on celandine and vendor sell away the bones without knowing what they can be used for.

My first two characters both have the Fisherman’s Companion. My druid tried fishing in PoN and was promptly killed before he even reached the water. So I started searching the bazaar. I eventually found the bones I needed, but they were not cheap in the least. However, I think the companion is one of the coolest toys in the game so I was willing to spend the money. You might list the names of the bones to watch for in the bazaar and who to turn them in to. I’m now playing a shaman and I’ve have started looking for the bones yet again. Unfortunately, nobody seems to be selling them at the moment. But I’ll keep trying. Oh, if you know of a safe way to fish in PoN, that would be very helpful as well. Darn those hobgoblins.

When you hear the announcement that the database is in beta, please nudge me if you'd like it on the site, and you've got this tweaked/edited/changed to your liking.

I'd rather not put it up right now if you're still mucking with it, and while I don't want to lose track of this, I've got too much on my plate right now to properly keep track of it.

Also, if youre guild is Sleepers Tomb keyed, fish there at the warder pull spot (where the final arbiter stands) between pulls. The Weary Wrass bones can be fletched into FABULOUS range throwing items. My guild monks remind everyone to bring bait to ST and to fish between pulls and they LOVE the throwing darts i make for em. =)

The reason they've never caught on is because no one can make the high-class fashion statement they necessitate by wearing them visibly on their vest and hat.

I'm going to post the finished version here later. Don't know if I should edit the original post, or just add the finished version as an additional post to this thread.

I would suggest just adding it to the end of the thread; otherwise the rest of the posts may not make as much sense. And I’m sure anyone interested in reading the finished product, such as myself, will be willing to scroll down to find it.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
