  • The Economical Smith - Version 5.0 Out - Supplement Available

I finished Edition 5.0 of THE ECONOMICAL SMITH and posted it.

    Edition 5.0 adds/corrects the following:

    * Corrected information about gnomes as cultural smiths (they aren’t)

    * Updated discussion about trivials to include changed failure rates.

    * Updated charts for new fine steel conversion rates.

    * Added new Karana-only skillup path for making Karana arrowheads.

    * Fixed references to price differences between sized chainmail patterns and plate armor molds; these differences no longer exist.

    * Added information related to the new armor recipes available in the Lost Dungeons of Norrath® expansion, including market analysis and skillup recommendations.

For those content with Edition 4.0 without most of what is listed above, but are interested in the information about LDoN armor (for which I have been smithing my little blue patootie off and STILL didn't get a single skillup!!), I have included a downloadable 12-page supplement that covers the LDoN armor as a skillup path and compares it to other post-188 skillup paths (I do not actually recommend the ringmail for skilling in the guide and recommend only plate).

    It's at the usual address:

though previous visitors will see a BIG change to the site in terms of graphics.

The original link listed isn't working. I found this one though:

The link works fine. It just goes to the site I've created where all my guides will eventually be housed.

Zera, thank you. This weekend I finally managed to hit 200 (many levels and AA's before I choose to push on from there). Your guide was a tremendous help from 116-188, and now with your LDoN supplement, all the way to 200 (or 212 for people heading that route).

All told, I probably did about 10 to 120 combines to pound out from 193-200 all exclusively on LDoN plate, though a mixed bag of MM, Rujark and Miragul's tempers.

            Thanks for the great guide!

Please note that I trivialed the Ornate Gold Tunic at 155, not 156 as stated in the guide. This is the trivial noted on the main site. The reference is on page 53 under "Optional ornate project 7."

              LDoN Trivial correction

Small Sandblasted Steel Visors were trivial to me at 191 skill (shown as 192)

Bizarrely, I would swear that the previous batch I made with a different temper was NOT trivial, but I can't tell from my logs what I was making.

As I can't forage, the temper components are too dear for me to do a full test to see if the triv actually does change based on temper used or not. I did make sure to redo the Sandblasted Visor combine to verify that it was trivial, though.

My compliments to the creator(s) of this guide. I have found it immensely helpful. One question though, I have been turning all my Embroidery Needles into Erud Needles to get to skill 132 and the guide (v5.0.1) says they can be sold to vendors for ~9pp. I cannot find a vendor willing to give me anything at all for them. Is this something new? Or have I missed something?

There was a fix to several tradeskill-made items. At the time this guide was written, the needles did yield a small profit. Not anymore.

Yes, there have been a number of small changes. I will be posting a complete revision (Version 6.0) incorporating all of these changes after the scheduled December 16th patch. I want to see whether CVTs are restored to the vendor in Thurgadin and some other minor things before I create the next edition.

                      Ornate Chain Mail....

In your guide, you skip the Ornate Chain Mail items that use silver.

This may have made sense when the embroidering needles could be made culteral for a nice profit. But that profit no longer exists.

I got to level 108 very cheaply by exping then some farming the lesser shades for swirling shadows.

It would now seem that making the Ornate Chain Veil (116) and then the Ornate Chain Bracelet (122) which use silver before going to the ones using Electrum would be a very viable and economical method. All based on the same caveat of farming the high quality ores as much as possible. I haven't tried this yet, so I am not sure of the payback values on the sale of created items to the vendors.

Even if these 2 items sell at a loss, I find it hard to believe that the loss will be greater than getting 0 pp in return for the cultural needles
