Anyone have a recommendation for a minimum skill level before attempting to tinker one of these?

250 with a Geerlok in hand? But if you want to try lower, 230ish. Depends on how strong your guts and bank are.

IF the GM spanner has a success rate of 50% at 250 skill (like the other GM tools appear to have)
      and
IF the chance of success is reduced by 1% each skill level below 250, and increased by 1% above (Hotly debated, but probably a semi-reasonable first approximation).

then you would have the following chances of success (skills listed are true skill before the geerlok, but assume you equip the geerlok)

      250: 52%
      240: 52%
      230: 41%
      220: 31%
      210: 20%
      200: 10%

As EnfinitiStarr8 said, "Depends on how strong your guts and bank are."

        Did mine at 208

With the tinkering tools in hand. I did 3 combines in a row and succeeded on the third. I has previously done 1 combine already, which obviously also failed.

I might have been lucky, but I find that when making non-trivial combines (combines for which you'll never see a trivial msg) I never fail more than 3 times in row when I breeched 200. Not on the spanner, not on the GVD, not the clockwork armor.

        Just a thought

I started trying some at around 200 skill...and I didn't succeed until around the 220 level, after almost 10 tries, iirc. From what I see of most trophies, and not being trivial under 250...hold out as long as you can until your skill is higher to try

It's basically as people say, totally dependant on your guts and bankroll...I know that my competition at the time for being 1st to 250 succeeded his at 200 skill on the first try

My tinkerer was at skill 222, no geerlok, and armed with only KEI, when she made hers. She failed 2 times, and succeeded on the 3rd try.

Well for some crazy reason (I buy lottery tickets too) I thought I could make a GM Spanner last night.

So at Tinkering (193) I gave it a shot. Also had 5% geerlok.

              Bad mistake hehehe

Oh well I will keep you informed

So the thought is that you need atleast 200 before reasonable succuss?

On a side note, I did however make my gm alchemy bag on my shm when he was 180 or so.

The shaman one is different. Alchemy caps lower and the trivial point of their trophy is scaled accordingly.

Personally, I say wait until 240. Geerlok gives the same 5%. It's cheaper to just buy tinkering bags or the halfling made ones than fail trophies to get the bag. And with collapsed toolkits, it's not that hard or expensive to get to 242. Before the SoL geerloks triv, the failure rate is too high. After they triv, your skill up rate is quite decent, about to hit 1 in 20-30 or so.

Now, there's pride in having the spanner, but there's also pride in having 250 skill. Might as well work toward the latter and put off the former until you have a floored the failure chance.
It's up to you, what you do will decide your own fate.

Yeah, I was overly-eager when I hit about 220 in Tinkering. I gave a shot at the Trophy. And failed.

The I got to about 232 and tried again.
                  And failed.

So I won't try again until 240 w/geerlok. I know I still might fail, but my chances will better by then.

                  Good luck, gnomes!

Int doesn't matter for success, so irrelevant. Just impacts your chance of getting a skill up on the combine.

                          Congrats on your trophy.
