  • Skill caps

I tried FAQ and elsewhere, as well as several other sites, pretty much now all either defunct, or so old skills only went up to 250, so I'm gonna post here, and hope nobody says "RTFM"...

I have leveled a gnome rogue up to 51 just to do tinkering and poisonmaking for me, since I have 300s in all of the skills available to a barbarian shaman already.

My rogue has now reached 280 (294 with geerlok). He has gone through several piles of molten gears and bolts without a skillup, and it suddenly occurs to me that I might be butting my head up against a skill cap/level issue. I thought SOE had gotten rid of all of that a while back, but maybe I'm wrong.

So, if you still can't skill up in tinkering until lvl 16, and start at 50 (if I recall correctly), that means he gained 230 points over 35 levels. I don't see any obvious "per level" limit built into that number, but then, I didn't skill up at all until I hit 51, so I don't have any empirical evidence either way.

It is entirely possible I have just hit a bad streak. I know after 280 my skillup odds should be something in the neighborhood of 1 in 40, but I' doing considerably worse than that. Could be just bad luck, but before I potentially waste any more materials, can anyone confirm for me that I'm not butting my head against any artificial limit?

    Thanks,

Level 16 to advance beyond 50 skill

No other skill cap for tinkering exists. There was a 200 skill cap long, long ago, which was fixed twice. (Once for the existing gnome classes, once again later when they added more classes to gnomes and accidentally used the old code.)

Beyond that, you can just assume that the RNG hates you. Trust me, it hates me more... Just ask, some day I'll tell you about my 'hell' points in tinkering.

When I hit 250 tinkering, I went through I think 150 combines without a skillup. Was such a killjoy... I hit a platform level of tinkering, and bam, the dark side of the RNG decides to show up.

Wow it waited until you hit 250? it must have been napping.

My gnome was 282 in tinkering at level 49. You hit a bad run with the RNG, not a skill cap.

As I write this my Gnome mage has a 257 tinkering skill and he's still barely into level 16. (Yes, I created him for the sole purpose of having a character who could do tinkering.) Click HERE to see his Authentic Magelo.

              Thanks for the feedback.

I had burned through almost 200 molten gears/bolts with nothing to show for it before I posted the question, but after seeing responses I went back yesterday evening and started clicking away again.

              Within 40 combines I got 281 and 282 done

/sigh now I get to start farming carapaces in PoI I guess. Those last 18 points are gonna be a beeeatch.

I feel your pain, I'm also struggling through that range now.

                  Make master's servolinked sleeves.
This will require you to get to 180 or so in smithing to do the subcombine, but that will feel like a nice break with easy skill ups after your last tinkering run. Yttrium in the deep is far more common than carapaces, and you get an extra 5% skill up chance so you don't need to farm as much.

Nah, it didn't wait until then to act up, just that was one that really got me down. Landmark skill level, then bam... the (so far, knock on wood) worst RNG act up I've dealt with so far.

I had a horrible skill-up rate making elemental cams. Got about 3 skill-ups from roughly 200 combines. Was the only time through the entire path to 300 skill that was worse than about 15 combines per skill-up on average with other recipes.

dont feal to bad, the planer cams seem to have a REALY REALY bad luck of no skill ups and im sure any tinker can tell you. i stoped at about 270 when the range just blew out for me and said screw this im going yittruming, within about 500 yittrum blocks i had 290 skill.

Sounds like something to look forward to

Right now, I'm sitting at 236, trying to gather enough coiled springs and molten ore, while occasionally farming the Deep. Better start saving plat.
