  • Tinkering + Smithing Required?

So I've got my tinkering to a high enough level that I was gonna try to make some Masters armor. For example I wanted to make Master's Autoactuated Boots for an alt. The recipe is: gears, gnomish smithy hammer, innovative clockwork bolts, knuckle joint(2), master's actuated bronze sheet(2), mold for gnomish boots combine them all in a toolbox.

So I went about grabbing stuff out of my bank, bought the mold and then was suprised when I looked up the master's actuated bronze sheet. There's no tinkering combine for it? Making the actual Master's Actuated Bronze Sheet is no problem at a triv of only 15, but when you get to the Master's Servolink Bronze Bar which is requierd to make the Bronze Sheets, the triv suddenly jumps to 182 smithing triv.

So correct me if I'm wrong but in order to use tinkering for making DoN armor for at least plate classes, we have to have semi high smithing as well? I noticed the sheets for the GM plate DoN gnomer armor has smithing trivs of like 242 trivial level. I bet this means the Metalofiber armor has to require a tailoring component with just as high trivials.

So I suppose we need high smithing and tailoring as well. Guess I'll start to crunch those tradeskills

You are correct that you need both.

But actually, it's not as bad as it might first appear. Smithing skillups slow WAY down once you have to switch to shadowscream (post 222), but fortunately, you don't need to go that high to succeed on the subcombines, even for the GM version. I've succeeded on every smithing subcombine required for my full set of GM armor, and I did most of them around 215 skill + geerlok. The GM bar combines are only 242 trivial, so if you check the site calculator, near 220 skill is pretty much as high as you need.

You can get to 188 with basically store bought combines (other than the padding which is easy to get). From there you can go to 210 with LDoN armors, and if you set up a buyer for the tempers you can probably get what you need in quantity for 25 - 50p per. At least, that's true on my server as I recently bought about 15 stacks of the stuff over the last few weeks helping a friend skill her smithing.

It's the symbols that are the real difficulty, as those cannot be done via tinkering, and they have the same trivial levels as the armor combines. Fortunately, the symbols can be made through either tailoring or smithing, so choose whichever is easiest to skill on for you.

I picked tailoring as I was already in the 240 skill range on that when the new recipes came out. I got my tailoring to 255 and salvage 2 before I made my symbols, and I had a pretty fair success rate (on the order of 50%). I even had salvage fire on some of the expensive ingredients which was nice.

Oh my goodness, those stat changes to the armors with the last patch are NICE. I finally broke 6K mana unbuffed, which while it might not seem like much to some of the raiders out there, for someone from a small family non-raiding guild who has never seen the Elementals, it was a major milestone for me. I am one happy gnome.

It was definitely worth all the time and effort to raise my tailoring, tinkering, and smithing high enough to make my armor. Hopefully you'll feel the same when you finish. Good luck on your quest!

edit: Hey, I just noticed you're from CT Server. I can't remember whether the smithed sheets are no drop when you're done (I'll have to check my bank tonight to confirm), but if not, and you're desperate to try to make yourself armor now, send me a tell in game and I'll help you out.

I've never seen more than 5 or so tempers or temper bits in the baz at any one time. Enchanted Velium Bits to 222 is what I'll use.

I've got two stacks on my trader on maelin right now

The LDoN tempers do take a bit of time to get enough, that's true - but they have fabulous tribute value, and EVBs are wasted pp. Depends on what is important, I took my time and saved up the tempers and ended up with a return on all my skilling up in this case, but there have certainly been other times I've used the 'impatient' method.

Bah! 18plat/combine to 222 if you bring your own velium isn't bad at all, especially now with the new velium weapon combines. With the ldon stuff you're paying more than that at the high levels for the molds and folded sheet metal.

... and EVBs are wasted pp...
Now that you can break down velium weaps, EVBs are very easy on the pocketbook...
