  • So whats the point of my Tinker?

I got my Enchanter 250 tinkering, and have no viable use for him

Is it me or are there no decent receipes compared to the other tradeskills?
Given the boost for Poison and Alchemy why arent there Tinkered augs?

Tinkering has it's uses though nowhere near as valuable as the others can be. Tinkered goods go in and out of fashion, though geerloks and collapsed containers always seem to be in demand. Cams for bows, cooking implements, doodads and nicknacks.

Tinker because you want to and like to. Generally if you start out wanting to get rich or powerful with tinkering you'll be sorely disappointed and most likely broke.

Tinkering is more of a hobby that occaisionally pays off, not a tradeskill imo.

Look at the two recent additions, Throwing Knife Stamper and Ice Cream Churn.
They're practically useless, difficult to find parts for, involves running all over creation just to be prepared to make them. Hardly anyone wants to buy them... They're irritating and a waste of time. I only have one question about them, having tinkered for 5 years....

    More please?

Tinkering is all about niche items... it's about making that unique, fun, odd, helpful but not necessary little object. Tinkering stuff sells well (although it doesn't really have many big ticket items) but it does need a lot more... marketing, I guess you would call it.

Tinkering stuff sells very well for me, no other tradeskill gains me more money over time than tinkering has done.

        What do we have?
        Geerloks
        Collapsibles
        Corking Devices
        Planar Bow Cams
        GVD's
        Gem Cutters
        Anizok's

While GVD's, gemcutters and Anizok's are a pain to get parts for and Planar Bow Cams have very streaky sales, the Geerloks, Collapsibles and Corking Devices are steady long term, day in day out earners if you pitch your prices right. They do go through spats as people pass through their skill range and flood the market for a short while but I generally earn 3 to 4k per night, every night from just those items.

And the other point about tinerking is that it's in addtion to all the other tradeskills and is one of only two extra tradeskills that doesn't need AA points to unlock after your first skill goes through 200.

You can get tinkering over 200 for free if you already have another tradeskill over 200? Did I understand that right?

If tinkering was my first tradeskill over 200, can I raise another over 200 without spending the AA's?.

yes, tinkering doesn't 'count' towards the old "only one tradeskill above 200" limit (pre-NTCM) so you can have Tinkering over 200, before or after you get one of the other basic skills >200.

And if you are a gnome Rogue, you can get Make Poison to 250 as well, thus having 3 skills (Tinkering, Poison Mastery + 'other') >200 without spencing any AA at all.

Or, if you're a Gnome Caster-type, you can have your Research at 200, as well.

Gnome enchanter-rogue-shaman would have all the perks

(JCM, access to spell research, tinkering, poison making, & alchemy)*

*disclaimer - enchanter-rogue-shaman is not a real EQ1 class. Try EQ2, they do all sorts of crazy stuff in that game, from what I've read.

The thing you have to remember is do trade skilling because you enjoy it and you want to do it. It is not a get rich quick type of thing. If you think you are going to get rich quick with any trade skill you will be disappointed. The time and effoft it takes to get any really useful trade skill to 250 and the pp spent doing it you could have made a heck lot more pp spending that time farming your favorite pp making spot NOT to mention all the pp you would save NOT doing the trade skill.

I can't tinker, but I enjoy tradeskilling primarilty just to make things people enjoy in the game. Stat food, needed armor, or sheets and chains for elemental and ornate are cool and some pp. Fun food, root beer floats can make someones blah day. Bane weapons are unique, fun and needed.

Tinkering is even more special. Some of those items are just vital to guilds and raiding. Shrinkers, vanishers, etc are very vauable to have. It can make you feel great to be able to provide those things to your guildees. I think it is just awesome to be on a raid, and right after it is announced that someone gets the elemental drop I can go right up to them and hand them the appropriate amount of chains, sheets or swatches for their new upgrade on the spot. That's why I would do things. It's just fun to be able to say you can.

A tinker is a fletcher's best friend. Gnomedeguerre helped Guiscard skill up when Guiscard needed tons of standard cams, and to make money when Guiscard needed several planar cams. Guiscard paid him back by buying him an INT suit of 255, which is nice at level 16. He also keeps him in roots and water and never makes him leave PoK, where he can hang with Tabben and look up the female barb kilts.
