  • Some Tinkering Recommendations for Developers

Tinkering, as we all know, is a rare and fun skill the gnomes do. Ak'anon, being the enlightened and most industrial city in Norrath, is the center for this skill.

Recently it came to my attention that certain items that are gnome made have no use or no loger make sense.

    Gnomish Compass
    Azimuth Indicative Cuirass

With the changes to sense heading, these became worthless, and are not even good for skillups. Of course, I always argue that the final product should be usefull and not just for skillups.

Now, GoD got us a bunch of new things, specifically MANA BATTERIES. Since we already can buy manabatteries, and most other classes don't need them, we basically got a bunch of combines that lower cost of batteries, but in no way can promote sales as a tradeskill combine.

    In addition to these

    Fizbin's Guise,
    The antigrav unit
    and Flambolt.

I would like to see Fizbins to be illusion gnome, with charges
    Antigrav - screams levitate
Flamebolt - maybe unlimted charges of FLARE or maybe so charges with a small dmg spell for pulling.

The other, more important point, that I wanted to bring up was that Tinkering tends to make great items.....for gnomes. Unlike other tradeskils that have most of their items usefull for other classes and races, most usefull tinkered items are gnome only. If items could be added, even if they just had cute or limited effects, that all classes could use, it would greatly increase tinkering as a viable income source.

I would also make recommend more interdependancy between tradeskills, like tinkered cams are to fletching. With the idea of removing and re-adding runes, perhaps a "Augment Rune Setter/remover" that a jewler could use to take out and replace augment

    Um,
I think all the tradeskills have some items that have little or no use and no value to anyone at all. And I can think of a few broken and mystery recipes in the tradeskills I play in. Also, gnomes make some of the most useful gizmos in the game - geerloks, stalking probes, collapsible containers, and especially some of the anizok devices - I love my necrotic divining devices.

Tinkering is a blast and should get some new clever and nifty recipes, but so should all of the tradeskills. I know I whine about it a little too often, but pottery as a skill everyone can do has not seen anything really nifty added since Planes of Power (yes, it got some of the nicest upgrades a tradeskill had seen in a while, but it was a long time ago and well PLANAR). Brewing gets new recipes in small amounts in every expansion but also really could use some new nifty recipes too.

Brewing, Tinkering, Pottery, Poison Making, and Alchemy really need some invigoration. And I agree crossover skills make things a bit more fun.

I would like to see some Tinkered armor added for the casters (Necro,Wiz, Magi and Enchanter).
Tinkered armor is like our cultural armor but there is nothing for the casters.

Yes, I would love to see this added!

I realize that tinkering usually means working with metal gears, sprockets, etc. But there are other ways to do it...

If it were made from a special kind of silk or hide, sharkskin tubing, a vial of mana and/or mana battery (well, I guess the battery is required...), spell scroll, maybe a metal fastening or two, and anything else that might be necessary.

As for the effects that could be put on those items, I'd like to see a pair of boots with SOW. There's the effect that gives +30 dex, which would be nice. AGI would also be nice for dodging. Perhaps they could put one of the damage absorbtion spells (diamondskin) on the arms. Putting a Clarity, C2, or Spiritual Dominion on the head item would be nice for the wizzys and mages, since necros and 'chanters have their own ways of getting mana.

Something else I'd like to see, but they'll probably never put in, is a portable coin exchanger. Change copper to silver, silver to gold, etc., like at a bank. It could be made out of enchanted plat, gold, and silver bars, a cog/gear or two, and something to contain it all. I'm not sure how well it would sell in the Bazaar, but it's worth a shot... /shrug I think it would sell, but maybe that's just me.

Some useful high-end tinkered items would be nice.
A face item with minimal AC, no stats and See-invis (like Smoke wears).
A head item for int casters that has minimal AC no stats and FT1. (scuse me.. Mana regen 1)
Non-rechargeable boots with no stats that have 1 charge of Spirit of Cheetah (or some other conditional high speed movement buff, for escaping bad situations) (or maybe even make it an augment and have a couple charges)
Tinkered augments for weapons with Bane-xxx damage (like crab - Shouldnt a Crab Cracker be like a 1/25 weapon with Bane: crab(24)? )
Splunge the Insane - Former Test Server Inmate
Splunge (Reborn) - Hunter of Lightbringer

            The Omni-kit.

It is a collapsed kit that opens into an 8 slot container containing ND versions of :
            Collapsed Toolkit
            Collapsed Sewing Kit
            Collapsed Spit
            Collapsed Mixing Bowl
            Collapsed Fletching Kit
            Collapsed Jeweler's kit
            Collapsed Tacklebox
            Collapsed Mortar and Pestle

You then fish out the folded kit you want, reclose the omni-kit (destroy it), and unfold the kit you need. All your trade containers in one lower level slot.

Similarly, you could make an Omni-tool that unfolds into a container containing ND versions of common tools, like pie tins, smithy hammers, and so on. If going back into the code and making all the recipes work with the ND tools is too much trouble, I suppose you could make the omni-tool summon up regular droppable versions, but then you'd need to make it suck down Mana Batteries like nobodies business to keep people from using it as a sell to the vendors money machine, and to preserve the tool making market (such as it is) for tradeskillers who serve it.

If you do go for the plain old droppable version, the way to do it would be to have the Omni-tool open up into a container hilding a whole bunch of "folded tools" (ND) that require the insertion of a low level Mana Battery to be unfolded. (at which point they summon the tool in question, which can be sold to a vendor if one desires) SO :

            Omni-tool
            ___Universal Smithy Tool (ND)
            ______Folded Smithy Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Velium Smithy Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Combine Smithy Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Forging Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Dwarven Smithy Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Elven Smithy Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Tier'dal Smithy Hammer (Uncharged)
            ______Folded Smithing Chisel (Uncharged)
            ______Folded File (Uncharged)
            ___Universal Baking Tool (ND)
______(opens as container holding uncharged Folded baking tools of varius sorts)
___(Other Trades tools, on the same model)

Once you get to the desired folded tool, you need to put it into a tinkering kit with a Mana battery, hit combine (no fail) then it summons up the tool. All your trade tools in one lower level slot, plus another slot of two for batteries.

I'm sure someone has come up with this before, though.
