  • Serverwide First, I think.

After reading the recipe here, and the call for help from tinkering.org, Today at 4pm, I believe I have constructed the first Flame Bolt ever.

Woot, and Gratz to me. Took 6 tries, and got a skillup to 135. :-)

It looks like a Cracked Staff, only equippable in the off-hand. My Cleric can equip it and another Cracked Staff-appearing item in her primary and look like she's a dual wielding Monk.

Ooh! That could be nasty on the PvP servers, if someone plays a Human caster and has a friend who is a Tinkerer! Just slap on a robe that Monks can wear, or dye one so you can't tell what it is by looking at, equip a plain staff or a Glowing Black Stone in the left hand, a Fire Bolt in the right hand, and wait for someone to attack your `Monk'. Muwhahahahahaha!

Attacker: Bet you can't hit me with a Flying Kick before I cut you to ribbons!

`Monk': Flying Kick?! * casts Ice Comet*

It won't work. Notice the highlighted part of my quote.

Could you please attempt to sell to an NPC merchant and see what they offer you for it, if anything?

Thanks -- I'm still wondering how expensive a skill-path this would be.

                  Cost

The sellback (made one yesterday) was about 37pp with good cha. The sellback was about 5pp or so less than materials...I think. Sorry I don't remember exact numbers -I'm at work (bleah).

                    5pp! Wow. That's a fabulous option then, isn't it? It's all storebought and ...

Guess I better got on my gnome before they change this, thanks!

EDIT: Well, wait a sec. if the recipe is:

                    Pickbringers Chainmail Gloves, 33.87pp
                    metal twine, 1.5pp
                    gears, 7.35pp
                    sprockets, 7.35pp
                    and firewater, ~0.1pp
That adds up to about 50pp, which is more like 13pp per success... which is still worth doing, as the fast route from my current 166, so I will make an effort to power to 195 on this very soon.

Anybody tried putting a flame bolt together with a catapult? If this is an old, undiscovered recipe it could explain what catapults were supposed to be for prior to PoP. Or maybe an advanced propulsion unit?

I am at work or would give it a shot.

                        Flame Bolt (triv 195):
                        --Pickbringers Chainmail Gloves
                        --metal twine
                        --gears
                        --sprockets
                        --firewater
Nice, everything stacks except for the gloves and everything can be purchased from vendors (well, you do have to make the Firewater yourself -- from vendor-purchased items). Load up on the stackable stuff and park yourself in front of the glove vendor in Shadow Haven. Sweet... the tinker's version of the Casserole Dish (pottery) or Faydwer Shaker (brewing).

                            Sellback Price

I did a fast run by a vendor in Akanon to double check the sellback price I had posted yesterday. Of course I was wrong... but in a good way.

                            The sellback was 43pp.

Too bad Props is 246 skill. This would have been SO nice to have had instead of all those Porous Mineral Blocks!

Thanks to the discovery of this recipe (by splunge?), the first creation by Nioshpa/Lilosh and the sell-back information from Mavick, I decided to test this out.

                              Here are my results.

Skilling up with Flame Bolt: Trivial of 195

You can purchase the gloves from Melina Stalorok at #33 on the EQAtlas map of Shadowhaven.

All other supplies can be purchased at Marchop's Micro Metals, # 27 on the EQ Atlas
map, from Marchap Biddinight at 115, 1017 except for the firewater components. For those, the gnomish spirits can be purchased from Bilkel Biddinight at 195, 907 (in the unnumbered circle near 26) and the water can be purchased from Granger Kenforth at 14, 1175 (in the room to the east of #24 on the EQ Atlas described as “Room to east has Food and other Goods”).

(Note that as a gnome with no SH faction work, I was apprehensive to Melina Stalorok, who is a dwarf. I was also apprehensive to Bilkel Biddinight, a gnome, but he gave me better prices. All best prices were calculated by selling and buying these items to a PoK merchant with whom I had indifferent faction and using 107 CHA).

Gnomedeguerre went to Shadowhaven with Tinkering of 166, INT of 255, and a geerlok in hand. He did batches of approximately 30 flame bolts at a time, as follows:

Combines Successes Skill ups Ending Skill
                              30........28........4............170
                              30........25........7............177
                              20........17........0............177
                              30........28........7............184
                              30........28........2............186
                              32........31........2............188
                              30........27........1............189
                              30........27........2............191
                              30........30........3............194
                              _8........ 7........1............195

While my costs were higher because of the faction, at best prices, this would have cost me just about 2.3k. With my faction issues, my cost was closer to 2.7K. I suspect the traditional, slow and steady way with geerloks and collapsibles is probably less expensive, but it is very slow for me and so this newly discovered recipe was a nice gift from the folks at Sony.

The real question is whether, for a power-skill up, this should replace, say, rebreathers or even Aqualungs in the skill up path. Gnomedeguerre did Aqualungs until 148 and then made rebreathers with all of the Aqualungs, which got him to about 158. I was then able to sell those rebreathers at a price high enough above cost to earn back my cost of all goods, including failures, so that made sense for me. The points from 158 to 166 were on a series of scrounged up geerloks and collapsibles, and a few corking devices, and I would think that, had I known this recipe, I would have done Fire Bolts from the point I ran out of Aqualungs for rebreathers onward.
