My tailoring is currently at 215 and as a Erudite SK my intelligence is only 142. From what I have read on this board the worst is yet to come regarding skillups. My question then is, how important is intelligence when attempting to skillup. Should I really invest in int gear? Or is my current intelligence good enough? Is there a intelligence cap for someone of my level. Any information would be helpful.

Is Int/Wis really important for skillups?

While I have never had a 255 Wis, I can attest to the fact that Wisdom, or for that matter Intelligence, is important when it comes to skillups.
Prior to my coming to EQTraders and getting down and dirty with my Tailoring, I used to fiddle with it, slowly working my way up to 115. I had at the time a Wisdom of about 110 when I was working on my Tailoring at the time. When I started to get serious with my Tailoring I did Crystallline Silk and Wu's. When I did the Silk's and Wu's, I made sure my Wis was better and got myself a KEI any time I did combines for Skillups. This gave me a Wis of about 140 (I don't remember what Wis I had so rounded numbers works *grin*). I used over 350 combines to go from about 151 to 158 doing Wu's. After coming here to EQTraders and reading some of the replies of people doing skillup runs, I found that their combine numbers were alot less for skillups doing the same thing. Thier Wis was alot higher than mine was.
Since then, I have increased my Wisdom gear and moved my Wisdom over 200 for skillup runs. My average for a skillup per number of combines has lowered.
You will get skillups with the Int that you currently have, but if you want to get skillups faster than you are currently getting, I suggest you get additional Int gear just for skillups. Put the gear in the bank and use it just for when you make combines that are not trivial if you don't have any other use for it.

I can attest to the fact that high wisdom or intelligence will make a difference.
My main Druid has had a high Wis since his birth being blessed with a big brother Ranger who outfitted him with wonderful things. I have watched my friends and even my wife who is lower level so cannot get her wisdom to max out but it is close, get much lower skill up rates than I do.
There will always be bad runs but I really have averaged 20 attempts per skill up or better.

My poor ogre buddy has an intelligence about 100 points lower than other trasdeskillers in my guild. He's working on brewing and he is seeing abysmal skillup rates post-100 compared to others who tackled brewing. I can't say that a wis/int of 250 is significantly better than, say, 245, but certainly try to get it as high as you reasonably can.

I'll confirm that an INT of 250 or more will significantly reduce the number of attempts per skillup.
As an SK you don't really need INT gear for your general use, but it would be an excellent idea to put together a 'tradeskills suit' that you use when attempting to skillup.
Do a search in the bazaar for items with INT (you may want to limit the search to a slot at a time and include your class/race as part of the search), sort them by price and go to town.
Without a whole lot of difficulty you could put together a tradeskills suit to get you well above 200 INT, but I think it is worth shooting for 255 if you can.
You don't say what your level is, so we can't tell you what your INT cap is. Essentially from level 1 to 60 your cap is 255, above level 61 you can raise your INT to higher levels by spending AA points in Planar Power in addition to the extra 5 points of room you get for each level above 60.
