  • Buying supplies for Combines

From another post I did not wish to derail:

"Cost for 20 combines ends up being about 2k" - Solstice Robes, buying silks as well. So 100pp per attempt. (excluding the chain cost obviously)

100pp per attempt is my goal if I am buying supplies for skill attempts - with much more love of those that do not require heavy amounts of pre-combines. I’m not the richest of men, but, should I succeed on a valuable item AND sale it, all money gets reinvested into Tailoring. Best case, maybe once a week do I get to buy supplies for a 10-20 skillup attempts.

I’m a halfling and here is what I use:

    1) Farm acrylia - buy the flawless hides - make the tannin. (Hides can be found for 90-100pp if I’m patient). I find acrylia easier to farm, as well, the runes and such I get while farming = plat.

    2) Farm the Hides - buy the acrylia – make the tannin. (Small bricks go for 50+, personally I won’t spend more than 50-60pp for them).

    3) Farm HQ Brute Hides or buy (again, keep under 100pp), buy / forage Misty acorns and make Oil, (add Imbued Plains Pebble if over 215), Steel Boning. I make boning at 2-3 stacks at a time, and it lasts awhile.

    4) Vel. Tailoring – COSTLY, rarely use unless I happen to forage a Yew leaf or get a pelt that requires Bonings. The cost of Tempers alone eat up a good amount for Studs. Most hides are sold for 200-500pp and up, obviously this exceeds my 100pp limit.

    5) Solstice Robes, which I despise. But depending on your skill, successes will certainly cost more than 100pp per attempt.

Or, farm all the supplies – which I do 99% of the time, but everything I loot while farming gets turned into coin, which gets turned into supplies.

BTW, I'm 191 atm (missed the ribbons and bag options). I hunt in TM for acrylia, or anywhere in Vel. that yields xp and the ability to forage Tufts.
What other options do you use?

    63 Rog - My main.
    45 Dru - My tailor.
    Sunburnt Dmize - 80 Druid - D-Ro
    300 - Tailor +15%, Smith +12%, Fletcher +12%, Brewer +12%, JC +12%, Potter +12%, Baker +12%

    Phrump Eatsogres - 32 Gnome - D-Ro
    300 - Tinker +15%
    300 - Researcher +12%
    300 - Tailor +12%

Rockhopper hides seem to go for twice your bottom price on Xev. I never see Superb for less than 140pp and most are 200, while flawless go for 220-250. So local server prices make a difference. (edit: I actually checked the bazaar and Flawless hides are now up to 400 pp each. Geez.)

On the other hand, if you're willing to use more acrylia to make items other than masks, you can sell a slow but steady stream of cloaks, leggings, sleeves, and maybe tunics and even gorgets. This can either make you a profit if you farm it all or help you purchase more supplies for skilling up.

You can also watch the otter vendors in CS (if you're not KOS) for wyvern hides at about 13pp each. When the bazaar first opened I picked up tons of wyvern hides for 10-20 pp each, so I have 300-400 combines of those sitting in the bank waiting for me to max out studded.

Arctic wyvern is a royal PITA

yeah til you realize how long its gonna take you to fish up 300 or 400 cobalt cods - oh yeah and then add 2 coldain tempers per stud ( you willl not want to make these and the 26pp price in thurg looks nicer and niceer every time I make a couple coldain heaters.

Velious tailoring is a Major PITA and I recently picked up 100 hides.

Spent the next two days making the coldain temper, fishing, and farming the velium.

End result ,I had 24 attempts, 12 successes, 1 skillup and I still got 75 or so hides left.

What a royal pain, but I am now proud to say I have breeched the 220 skill (221 atm + trophy woo!)

good luck and dont get discouraged, its a long process but know how well it will feel when you see 250 in your skills list for tailoring...

I didn't find arctic wyvern to be too bad personally.

The pelts are pretty damm cheap in the bazaar. Often times in the 5-10pp range.

At 2 tempers per stud thats a bit over 50pp per combine if you buy em in thurgadin. You may have people making them and selling them in the bazaar for cheaper. If not you can also come in a bit cheaper if you can buy the CE's for 5pp or less and brew from there. Going that route isn't bad. Personally I won't buy ce's at that price for other combines but it isn't too bad for making coldain velium tempers.

The best way i found to get the velium peices for the studs in the bazaar is to buy small bricks and break them down to peices. Can usually get the small bricks for little more than the peices and you get 2 peices per brick. If you can find either on vendors then you can get em really cheap. Small brick was ~11pp from a vendor and the peices where less than a pp if memory serves. If you figure bought small bricks in the bazaar for 30pp thats 15pp per peice and 45pp for the three peices per stud.

This brings the total to right around 100pp so far. That just leaves the cod oil. Personally I use my 53 druid for fishing in CS on my second system while I raid on my main system on my main char so this isn't a big deal for me.

At least right now It's rare to see othmir fur for less than 100pp each and rare to see flawless rockhopper hides under 200pp for the reinforced so these both run 200pp+ if you buy them.

If you vendor mine the velium or camp it and can buy ce/coldain velium tempers for a reasonable price the arctic wyvern makes a good compromise between cost and work IMO.

Robes still seem to be the cheapest if you have any sort of market for the robes left on your server. They do get to be difficult when your still gets higher since you make soo many.

63 rogue. Well, not that I'd do this but...you could trash your Othmir faction and have your main farm Othmir (or the druid, but druids tend to like quadding Wyvern so...). While your main is resting between farming othmir fish for cod. Eventualy, your druid SHOULD hunt the Wyvern, if nothing else for the hides (even if they are the cheep component, better free than 13pp each.).

Either that or take your rogue to the new Acrylia Caverns, or Akavah Ruins, and farm there for acrylia. I think the drop rate is better from higher level mobs (in AR the alien types, in the new AC I'm not sure honestly, but I suppose they could all drop acrylia. It use to be a very decent place for peices and bricks but I've been a little leery in there once all the green mobs disappeared. So did most of their light blue friends...).

Last note: a 63 rogue should have no problems terrorizing the Rockhoppers in DS, unless he can't find any because of over-camping. You might just run between the entrance of AR and the DS rockhopper cave farming wichever isn't camped at the moment.
Tailoring, why did I ever start tailoring? *sob*
