LoY ribbons for skilling feasability querry

My troll SK is doing the shawl quest and I'd like to hedge my bets if at all possible and up my tailoring past Wu's trivial (that's right, you're dealing with someone even crazier than the average tailor - he's sending a TROLL on a collision course towards 200 skill). :shock:

Sadly, the other thread on this subject was pretty convoluted and had pretty much degenerated into a "my tradeskill is harder than yours" debate.

So, having already gotten all of the associated whines and debatable aspects of this topic out of the way, just how feasable are these suckers as an alternative to acrylia?

What's the average cost per combine?
What's the best ribbons to skill on (looks like they take some foraged or dropped components to make)?
Is this worth doing or should I just be happy with a geerlok and the affections of lady luck?

Since none of my characters had the proper skills, race nor inclination to GM tailoring, I'm sorry to say that I didn't really pay too much attention to the whole thing when the robes came out.

I think they are definitely to be considered as an alternative to acrylia. Certainly for those with more money than time.

There are 36 ribbons in all. Each takes a <metal> ribbon (silver/gold/platinum), and a dye. The ribbons are only available in the Gunthak lighthouse, and cost ~ 16pp / 31pp / 105pp. They are NO DROP.

There are 12 dyes in all, each is mid-level brew of a dropped-and-foraged item with water. These dye components are to be found in vaguely race-related zones, appropriate to the race that will use the ribbon to make a robe. However, since anyone can make any ribbon, that's just a minor detail for those skilling up.

The dyes can be divided into two groups, let's just call them A and B. The trivials for the ribbon combines are then as follows:

silver + dye from group A = 116
silver + dye from group B = 121 probably; best info is 119-131
gold + dye from group A = 162
gold + dye from group B = 167
platinum + dye from group A = 182
platinum + dye from group B = 187

I think I must also mention here in passing the folded bearskin potion bag which takes a thick grizzly bear skin, silk cord, gold ribbon and trivials at 162

Here are the dye components and their zones. As well as being foraged, they also DROP off mobs in the relevant zones, which means that depending on your level, mass green slaughter might be the way to go:

Group A:
Plains Roots (West Commonlands)
Honey Berry (Dreadlands)
Steamfont Springwater (Steamfont)
Sylvan Berries (Lesser Faydark)
Cursed Clover of Viesar (Overthere)
Seahorse Roe (Erud's Crossing)

Group B:
Plant Shoots (Jaggedpine)
Maneater Bud (Swamp of No Hope)
Cauldron Prawns (Dagnor's Cauldron)
Lichenclover (Firiona Vie, Frontier Mountains)
Ashweed (Lavastorm)
Bamboo Shoot (Stonebrunt)

Check for these in the bazaar; some are more common than others. Prices (at least on Tunare) seem to run around 20-30pp.

Also check threads passim for info on what mobs DROP these things. I believe Steamfont kobolds are the lowest level mob to drop any of these items and hence the favored target for mass green slaughter. If you're gonna set up a forager, be sure to check the foraged items page so you can pick a zone with few 'rare' forages other than the one you want (hint: Dagnor's ).

Anyway I've done more than enough research for you, and given you all the words with which to search for other threads - I'll just mention the one-time cost of the shears (not much at all), and remind you that platinum ribbons cost 105pp and the finished product sells to vendors for less than 30pp, so if you prefer farming rockhoppers and acrylia to farming cash, this isn't the way for you.

Looks like the steamfront spring water will be the way to go - I remember scoring tons of that stuff back when hunting brownies and doing my trueshot with my ranger (now that I want it it will be rare as heck of course).

Probobly won't go past the gold ribbons for now, but that's still more points then I had before for my combine attempt.

Just want to note that group A & B are reversed for Erudites in the post above. Seahorse Roe is the less trivial component and Bamboo Shoot is the more trivial ( and more rare, grumble! )

Er... With regard to the posted prices...

I seem to remember some differences. IIRC, it was 30p for the gold ribbons, and 70p for the platinum ribbons.

when i farmed for the steamfont spring water I found killing the 3 kobald camps near the druid ring usually got me 5+ per a round there.

Actually if you only want to increase tailoring for the shawl quest, I found it's way, way, WAY easier and faster to just collect the ingredients and try the shawl after trivialing Wu's.

I made the 6th shawl at raw skill 164 + 5% geerlok. Failed twice at 158 raw skill + geerlok. Failed once at 164 + geerlok. Succeeded on the 4th try. Depending on your level, getting the stuff for the 6th shawl should be quite easy for a SK. Even the siren hairs are not as rare as I thought they would be. 1.5hours in CS yielded 4 hairs (enough for 2 tries) and about 500pp in cash and gems, which paid nicely for the 6 skill ups between 158-164.

I got those with Arctic Wyvern Armour. I had materials for about 25 tries and got 5 skill ups. And my lvl 12 baby shaman is now the proud owner of a mask. I made 2 masks out of the 25 combines, must have been very *very* lucky. I'm also working on the Solstice earring so I'm trying to make a robe, which yielded the 6th skill up and should get me a few more to comfortably try the 7th shawl. After that, I won't touch tailoring with a 10ft pole. :P Well, maybe to try and get my Shaman some nice looking armour.

I might just note that the various ribbons (silver, gold, platinum) are NO DROP, so it's advisable not to overbuy. Getting stuck with a partial stack of plat ribbons when you suddenly hit triv is NOT fun.... hehe.

The siren hair was actually not too bad to get - actually had more problems with the wolf whiskers as far as time spent farming went.

I was hunting the sirens at the zone line to SG - didn't have any gems or real cash loot drop though - were you kiting wyverns while waiting for the sirens to repop or something?

Made the no drop thread no problem but failed #6 for my first time - fingers crossed that I don't break my record for #3. :shock:

Once you make the ribbons, they do stack.

Personally, I am skilling up making robes. Much easier or harder I suppose as a High Elf Tailor. Foraging Sylvan Berries is not on my fun list!
