I am an Iksar Beastlord with 245 tailoring skill and so far I have not yet made a single piece of tailored equipment that I would want to wear myself, although I have made some nice stuff for guildies' mains (e.g. Robes of Tenancy & Misery, Ice Silk Cap, Haze panther gear) and lots of stuff for guildies' alts.
But then I am level 60 and I already had better gear than acrylia reinforced etc. when I started tailoring at level 55.
My long term goal is to make myself a full set of planar leather armour, and that really is amongst the best stuff that a beastlord can wear. Tae Ew leather leggings are also very nice. All these can be made by tailors of any race.
It was the lack of high end Beastlord gear that I could see myself being able to obtain (as I am seldom able to attend raids due to time zone difference from most of my guild - and I do not want to change guild) that set me off on tailoring in the first place, as an alternative way of obtaining high end gear.
If you ever want to be able to make anything really nice that you can wear yourself (as a Beastlord) you should go for tailoring rather than smithing.
