  • COW - Which race has the best cultural tailoring?

I am considering making an alt to become a GM Tailor. Any suggestions of race/class? Front runner in my mind is a Wood Elf Druid but I would like to solicit opinions from those in the know.

    Hmm.

Many people are starting to side with Erudites, although their market (beyond the 6th LoY Robe) is small.

Wood Elves have the best profitability from what I've seen, the market is saturated w/ Wood Elven Druids/Rangers..

Don't pick Halfling! The only thing worth selling at 250 is the Haversacks.. if only people like.. played halfling toons :P

        MOOOOOOOOOO!!!

        MOOOOO!!!!

        *munches grass*

        Ok, I'm better now.

For the most part, Halfling Druid Cultural is EXACTLY the same as Woodie Druid Cultural.

Woodies can make ranger gear for their rangers, and so can halflings.
Halflings make Karana Paladin Gear. Wood elves have no equivelant.
Halflings can make the Haversacks, which are neat.

        BUT

Erudite cultural has potential. They just got ribbons and robes to help with skillups, and their top robe is UBAH.

I dont know anything about their normal cultural though, since nobody, anywhere ever makes it.

Normal Erudite cultural is hideously expensive at 4 rubies a pop (plus the thread). You'd have to be out of your mind to try it as a skill up excercise.
The robes are better, but really only if you have access to AE spells, which you can use with abandon on the small island in Erud's Crossing. My poor paladin has no such things, and it takes him a fairly long time to gather the seahorse roe. The reports on the other Erudite tailoring item - bamboo shoots - seems to put their drop frequency as only slightly more common than 'non-existant'.
So if you don't make an AE casting class, there's not really anything particularly good about Erudite tailoring.

Its halfling all the way. No realy!
Ok, so the wood elf market for subpar armor is bigger than the halfling market. So what? If you look at the stats for the BD cultural, you come to the quick conclusion that the plate is FANTASTIC. And the chain...leavs something to be desired. And the leather...umm..right.
Basicaly, you'll probably make some for your own use, but don't count on selling much of it beyond that. Other non-cultural recipees usualy sell better (and don't cost quite as much to make). So that leaves 2 considerations:
            1) skill up paths
            2) non-armor cultural tailoring

Well, Euradites have a very nice path to take with the robes. Fortunatly, to make the ribbons you don't have to belong to the race, which leaves getting from 187 to 250 as a non-eruadite (HE, gnome, iksar) a problem. So the euradite tailor has some advantages. Also, the new caster robes are nice, so they may sell well for a while.

So, why a halfling instead of a euradite? Haversacks. Everyone needs a robe, or a peice of armor here and there. Everyone also needs 8 bags to carry around, and there is nothing finer than a haversack. It weights less than a tink bag (good market amongst High Elves, and Euradites due to low starting strength and monks due to weight limitations) and has all of the benifits. Oh, also saves on a hellish "run" from freeport/Nerrik to Sol A. Also a considerations goes out to being able to play 2 tracking classes, which is very valuable when it comes to obtaining drops for tailoring. Not to mention both of those classes forage...
Tailoring, why did I ever start tailoring? *sob*

Haversacks are a PITA to sell.

You can't put them on a trader and let them sit until they sell. You'd also better be pretty thickskined to take the abuse you'll get when you try to sell them for more than a tink.

I sold 4 and decided it just wasn't worth it.

human rangers, druids, and paladins can worship karana. Halfings arent your only customers if you are a halfling tailor. I would say that the number of characters on any server that can wear halfling armor is about equal to the number who can wear wood elf armor becuase of the paladins.

But IMO druids are poor customers for cultural armor because Elysian Armor is so easily soloable. Heck you dont even need to fight for most pieces, just hang out in UP and wait for an /ooc. Last time I was there I saw level 36's wandering around.

So in reality I think that halfling tailors are better because druids are such poor customers demand wise, the fact that halflings have a paladin market, and most importantly there are probably fewer halfling tailors on any given server than wood elves. Less competition is always a good thing for a merchant.

But this all varies widely from server to server. Before skilling up any cultural race for tailoring or smithing I would check the market to see if the current GM's are active bazaar sellers or just people who do combines on request. If there are already 2 Halfling tailors competing in the bazaar a 3rd probably wouldnt be very profitable. If there is no visible bazaar seller then you will make a ton of plat.

In case anyone was wondering, COW = Can O' Worms.

That said, thanks for the feedback. It looks like Norrath may have another Halfling Druid soon if I ever get the chance to play again.

I gave up selling haversacks. Not worth the time and effort for the measly profit on them. I have about 8 of them in the bank as bank bags and even my lvl 3 froggy has some. I've given them to my friends, but have no desire to sell them. I still do my tradeskilling in Thurgadin, so have the woven dire wolf fur to make another 3 or 4 if I ever "needed" to.

Stormreaper armor never sells. I've sold one ranger legs and one Pally legs and that's it. I wear a full set myself, but had to give away my inventory to friends.

Of course, the non-PoP tailoring market has pretty much dried up. I'm the only one offering to sell black pantherskins and rarely sell any. The uber-ish guilds are keeping the PoP tailoring pretty tight, although if you want to spam-auction with a second account, you can get some components. I've made one Nightmare robe and 2 pants (and no profit since they were given to friends).

Let me revise my question then, which is easier to acquire? HQ Brute hides or Excellent Sabertooth Tiger hides?

Erudites are best: Steelweave tailored armor is comparable to high end cutural smithed armor and everyone knows how much high end cultural smithed armor sells for: A lot! The only draw back is that steelweave looks like banded armor.

yeah, the eru BD cultural doesnt take the purified mana, so it actually costs less per attempt than the old cultural, depending on how you get the BD. its also wearable by other races, like the WE and HFL ones.

in the end, i'd say all three are about even, HQ brute hides and excellent sabertooth hides are both a pain.

In general, there are more people hunting in the zones where sabertooth tigers roam, than where brutes roam.

Both are rare drops off the mobs. The zones where brute hides drop are: Warslik Woods, Frontier Mountain (although, who hunts brutes there?), and Dreadlands (people outside KC and at BW zone hunt brutes). The zones where sabertooth hides drop are Lake of Ill Omen (by the bucketloads) and Overthere (also tens of people hunting tigers).

And I thought it was a nod to the "dead horse". Same basic meaning but an entirely different way to get there.
