Why has this suddenly become so popular people will pay 2 pp per piece? The only person who responded to me when I asked in the Bazaar gave me some odd tale of using them in a kit with a pattern. When I askeed for more details, he mentioned it was a quest he had been given by 'the leaders' in Luclin.. Sounds like he's talking about either the BL quest or the Shar Vahl tailoring quest, both of which would use shadeling silk, not spiderling silk. So does anyone have any ideas?

Spiderling silk?

Spiderling silk prices are based on their use in leather paddings for smithing. 2pp each would be considered a GOOD price on Rodcet nife.
THe quest that the guy was talking about is likely the Rallic pack quest, which uses 8 shadeling silks. However, since these are also used for paddings, people may become easily confused.
Since paddings sell for 20-30pp on rodcet (I make my own, don't blame the messenger), some people buy up the silks at 3.5pp each, and low quality pelts for up to 10pp, combine, and sell for a profit.
Not likely that they will go down soon, since so many BD armor smiths are out there now, and 30pp is trivial in an item that sells for 25kpp
* note, some of the newby armor quests require spiderling silks, but not the luclin ones

Well, if you say so. I certainly wouldn't pay that price for them.. Of course, I'm buying them 50 at a time frfom merchants for 5 silver and selling them for 1.5 pp each. Despite my disbelief, I'm happy to take advantage of people who'd rather pay than go fetch the items themselves. Their attitude will help pay for my coldain velium tempers. =)

I use to sell them for 4 to 5pp each (yes, 80 to 100pp a stack!) and I often sold out in a matter of minutes!
Now I'm lucky if I can get 40pp a stack for them, and it takes me a while to make a sale.
I find it easier to trade spiderling silks than to sell them for straight platinum. I traded 2 and a half stacks for a pair of Dwarven Workboots once (which are on my Halfling Ranger's feet right now).
