  • East Karana spawn table...what's with the spiders?

I figured that given the number of people here who regularly farm silks in East Karana, that someone here would have a better idea of this that I do...

I've been spending a lot of time lately in EK, farming silk off of crag and carrion spiders, and inevitably after 20 minutes or so, I start having to run around for a couple minutes before seeing any new spiders. At this point, I generally go into "kill anything that moves" mode, but I was wondering if I could be more efficient about this.

From what I've seen, I think the most likely candidates seem to be the snakes or the griffawns, as I seemed to be swamped with both after a run of killing spiders. But I've been doing this with a character that can't track (the highest character I have that can, can't yet efficiently farm in that zone), so that's at best a wild guess. I did see somewhat more spiders after killing some of each of these, but then I wasn't killing them exclusively, so...

Anyone have any more concrete idea what shares a spawn table with the EK spiders?

    Re

in my opinion, all the regular stuff is on the same spawn table. The war wolves and gnolls off on the hill are on a different spawn though.

The fastest way that I have found to get spiders to spawn is to run around killing everything that moves on top of the big hill. I usually PBAE-gather 15 or so snakes, lions, spiders, griffs, etc and AE them. Usually after two to three rounds of this, I see a strong increase in spider spawning (I am a tracking class so i can tell when they start popping all of a sudden).

I am not an expert, but this is my experience in making robes for over 50 points of tailoring and farming silk for it.....

Kill everything that moves is exactly what you need to do.

Killing everything that moves works, but if I recall correctly from the old board, many people felt that you had to kill the snakes to get more spiders.

I tag as many snakes as I can see and when I have a super-duper slithering swarm of slimey snakes I use a PBAoE to mow em down, seems to work just fine.

For a nontracking class, you need to find a well-defined area to do this. The two places I've used are either on the opposite side of spider hill (where the hill giants live) or in the middle of the zone just in front of the small hill. Spiders are easy to see, and when I do this with a tracking player, I normally don't even use tracking.

The most commonly named culprit to share the spawn table with the spiders are the snakes. Killing snakes also has the advantage that no one actually hunts the things (iirc, they're a little lower in level than everything else, and no one needs their drops), so you'll be doing away with the one mob that wouldn't otherwise be killed (think of it as a public service!).
I used to think that the lions weren't tied to the spider table, and one time I actually killed everything but spiders, and didn't notice a drop in the lion population (the zone was empty, and there was a nice jump in the spider population, but I wasn't hunting them at the time - it was a fun stunt). However, more recently, while spider hunting, I ignored the lions, and noticed the spider population start to dwindle.
It could be that some of the lions are on the same spawn table as the spiders. It could be that all of the lions are on the same spawn table as the spiders. Or it could be that both have different tables. Your guess is as good as mine.
I routinely ignore the wolves, however, while spider hunting.

Unless things have changed in the past couple weeks, there are a number of spawn controls in East Karana. EK was my hunting place of choice for Cat hides and spider silk while GMing Tailoring. I can say with great confidence that spiders and snakes are mutual place holders. Cats and dogs are also mutual place holders. There seems to be at least one table for the zone involving evil eyes, HGs, griffs, clops, and maybe others. I believe the griffons and HGs are mutual place holders as they are in NK. The rogue lion is the place holder for the named Hill Giant. The gnolls (reavers) are controlled by the night and day cycle.

Snakes, cats and spiders share the same spawn table - I will swear by this having had several interesting days where they were taking turns popping - nothing funnier then seeing dozens of snakes slithering around.

Best place to work is the area around the bandit camp or the area around the farm if you cant track - my buddy's SK works those areas without issues and cleans up.

                  Gee... Druid, I wonder?

When I hunt in EK I always kill lions for their hides for making leather pading for my smithing habit, spiders for silk for my tailoring habit, and snakes because I just don't like em! I also kill mist wolfs since they die fast and I figure it couldn't hurt.

I can't track so I have no idea if the spawn tables are the same or what not, but taking out just lions, snakes, and spiders (oh my!) seems to keep them all spawning equally for as long as I'm there.

Cigarskunk has it right. I used to think that the Cats and Spiders were on the same spawn table, but it is the Cats, Spiders AND Snakes that are on the same table. If you run out of Spiders, kill Cats and Snakes and the Spiders will spawn again. Kill them both and you won't have any problems with spawns, you will just have problems with everyone else hunting the Spiders just like you.

I'm a tracker and the only thing I track in EK when I'm farming is for "a griffon" to DC. After, just soe the pet, target mobs and /petattack.

Now if the dang griff could loot the mobs and bring me the silks and pelts, that would rock.

I use Jyll's, crags may survive but I also have a mid-level single-target nuke memmed to finish off teh stubborn ones.

For a cleric pboa I would use Upheaval. Earthquake should work for snakes and cats but for crags you might need upheaval, or have a single nuke memmed for the finishing blow.

I have been AE farming the spiders every now and then to build up stock for a run of solstice robes.

In order to be able to kill the crags outright, if you are a cleric or druid you must use Upheaval(dru51/clr52). All earthquake does is leave you with a ton of mobs scampering away that you have to track down and slowly melee or nuke away to oom.

The best tactic i have found is to get a farming buddy to actually do the pulling. I use a lvl 45 ranger as my personal farm machine....just send him around to tag all the carrion and crag spiders and the chasm crawlers (not sure if they are PH's, but i have seen a significant increase in crags when you kill the crawlers) skip the lions, hounds and stalkers because they run at different speeds. Then i just go stand next to my ranger buddy and drop upheaval...boom...instant silk factory. I can generally get at least 8 stacks of silk an hour with this method.
