Why do I need a Loom rather than a Sewing Kit?

I'm trying to craft some silk armour, as part of an NPC quest-ette, and once I had combined the items in question I was to find a Loom and use the pattern with the combination to form the final item.

My question is.. why do I need a loom to do this, can't I just use my large sewing kit?

You should only need a loom if the item you are making requires 9 or 10 slots for the combine.

Sounds like your newbie quests. I think they just say "loom" in the quest text so that newbies who aren't doing any tailoring don't waste their very-hard-earned-at-that-level gold/plat on a sewing kit.
