  • What would you do?

Hello clever people who help me with this pain that is tradeskills!

I did a load of tailoring combines yesterday and I am now sitting on 169 (YAY for me!) I have used up all my suberb rockhopper hides now and doing a "stock take" I discover I have 40 flawless hopper hides, about 50 arctic wyvern hides, stacks of velium pieces ready to make studs and over 40 cod oils.

    Should I
    1) Keep killing rockhoppers and combing the suberb hides as I get them or
    2) use up my supplies, cross my fingers and hope for some skill ups.

I'm not really trying to make money from this lot although I will keep some to sell so most will make masks.

I have all the ingredients ready to combine my 6th shawl and after the pain of getting those siren hairs I really don't want to fail so need to get my tailoring up. I'm a patient person and I will sit and kill more hoppers if that is the general consensus.

    Thanks!

You will get a number of different replies for doing different things. Myself, I did and still do Acrylia Studded and Reinforced and when I was at 163 I started doing both Acrylia Studded AND Acrylia Reinforced.

I say use up everything to get those skillups. Don't wait until you trivial Studded. If you farm for Superbs and get Flawless at the same time, why not try for skillups at the same time?

I went the crazy route as people think of it now.

      I did wu till trivial
I did Solstice Robes to 201 almost exclusively I threw in some Arctic Wyvern and some Cobalt Drake and a couple Acrylia but the Acrylia was a pain to get and getting silks and such was sooo much easier.

Now I am at 222 and I am using Hobbit Cultural and Haversacks and anything I can get my hands on to skillup with.

Good luck I say if you have something to combine go for it and hope for a success but Pray for the skill ups.

I used this handy flow chart to decide what to make when:

Do I have the stuff ----- Yes ----> Is it trivial? ----- No ----> Combine it
        .|................................................ ..|.......................................^
        .|................................................ ..|.......................................|
        .No............................................... Yes...................................|
        .|................................................ ..|.......................................|
        .V................................................ .V.......................................|
        .Dump it<--------------------------Can I sell it?----------------------/

Questions like can I afford it and will I suceed are for the weak and timid.

Set tailoring down for a bit, and wait till LoY comes out. After you have the bank space, farm hoppers for a long while, and stock up on the stuff for reinforced. Do studded as you get the pelts, and maybe do the arctic wyvern stuff also. You'll end up with a nice large batch of hides, if you can stand doing this till you trivial acrylia studded. Convert your small bricks of acrylia to boning immediatly, it will save a lot of space.

It will take long to get to 188, but you will have a lot of combines stocked up for when you get there. Sadly, you will also flood the market with acrylia reinforced unless you are careful (only make skill up items, and sell them to merchants).

            That is so true.

People ask how I am making a profit Tailoring and it is because I scraped all the pp together from my account and my wife's and bought supplies and took the risk to make stuff way beyond my skill level. Heck when you think about it if it is over 250 and your skill is over 200 go for it if you have a little cash if you can make something someone wants you get your money back. When I was making the Solstice robes there was a profit to be made even with numerous failures that is not possible now but there is Tigeraptor and Haversacks to be made.

If I have something that I can combine that trivials earlier, I'll hold onto those. If you can continue to farm hoppers do so. Here is my reasoning. As you farm them now for superb hides, you are also getting flawless. While they are "useless" to you know, after you trivial acrylia studded, or get close enough that you finally decide you don't care, you will allready have a stockpile of flawless hides sitting there waiting for you. If you use up both while studded is non-trivial, once you begin farming for purely flawless hides, the superb hides you get meen nothing to you, unless you are able to turn around and sell em or sell acrylia studded armor. I, myself, am very tight with money as I have little, so I have to take every copper I can get and save every microsecond of time I can.

I trivialled Acrylia Studded and the use of Superbs back in December. But I still hold onto the Superbs I get when farming for Flawless. 2 reasons why.

                1. I trade the Superbs for Flawless hides. I manage to trade em 1 for 1. Some people try to get more for their Flawless when I want to trade Superbs, but sooner or later I find a person who is willing to trade 1 for 1.

                2. To make more Acrylia Studded for Guildies and Friends.

While I may not actually need Superbs for skillups, I still need them for other purposes and its been working well so far.

Hmmm I am stockpiling at the moment, and plan to do Superb only up to 188, then I will do anything and everything I can lay my hands on.

I am only at skill 162.

I tried stockpiling, but with the shear unfathomable number of combines this still skill takes, I ended up combining everything I could get my hands on.

Fabulously failed 2 drake belts today. /shrug (stupid belts)

But! made like 22 robes and got 3 skill ups (something like 160 combines of robes today). =)

                    p.s.
celestial essence SUCKS. that is all.

Financially, I just recycle money. I make enough from the robes to cover their cost, so it's just my time and decreased life expectancy of my wrist.

Thanks for the replies... much food for thought.

I will combine what I have to try and get some more skill ups. I'm going to stay at the rockhoppers until I hit 56 (I'm half way through 55 now) and I should have a fair collection then and I like the idea of swapping the suberb for flawless when I trivial them.

Now I just need to go and kill a few more grimlings for acrylia.

BTW... I was happy to succeed on the first combine for the 6th shawl so now I've made some bag space and HOPEFULLY I can make my shawl on the weekend!

My advice would be to save the flawless pelts until you need a higher level combine to skillup. The Wyvern petls I would combine due to the fact that it's a fairly common pelt (compared to flawless) as well as the fact that the fail rate is high on wyvern even as you get higher in skill. (therefore not much to be made to sell) But once the larger bank is released - tradeskillers around the world will actually be able to hold things once again. So use those superb/wyvern to skill up for now, then switch to flawless/wyvern(holgaresh/othmir/panther if you can get them in quantities)

I would strongly suggest you wait on the Velious/Acrylia Reinforced, etc. Unless you want to speculate for sales.

Think of it this way. As you trivial out things, you have fewer (and normally harder/more expensive to get) ways to skill up. It is nice to finally trivial studded (or, 10 below trivial if that is your strategy), and have 4 or 5 stacks of flawless rockhoppers to work with. I ended up with 6 stacks of black pantherskin by the time I reached trivial for reinforced acrylia -- I was able to get a few skill ups at a time when they are hard to get.

What would I suggest you do? My blanket advise for all tailors:

Go to a good pet store and ask to hold a golden retriever puppy. (Try not to think of what armor made from its fur would trivial at.)

Pet the puppy. (You're still thinking about it, aren't you?)

Scratch him behind the ears. (No, not caster-only armor! Stop that!)

Feel better? (Do not go back to EQ and try to find 'a Young Coldain Tracking Wolf')
