There is another source of terrorantula silk that will make your eyes pop out of your head. On stormhammer (lucky you mahligh =) ) they have a scripted GM event which takes place in butcherblock. Where a "breeder" spider spawns and starts spawning literally 200 + spiders over time. Each of these spiders can drop 0-2 TERRORANTULA silks. Previous to the stacking rule people would just let the silks rot or on corpses, or even on the ground. The spiders also drop the belts which can be obtained from the Swamp of No Hope Dragon, so there were always alot of people out there whacking spiders. Don't underestimate these spiders though they are mean mean mean, best to bring a group if you can, and you never know you might get lucky and get a belt or a crown. Now the last time they ran this event, was awhile ago, so I am not sure if it is still active. But for awhlie it was being run about once a week. If you go to the entrance of Kaladim there is a dwarf there that will talk to you about helping his brother with a menace. If he is still there at least the script is activatable (activatable by a gm only mind you). But the kicker on this is the best part, as long as the breeder spider stays alive, it will continue to spawn more spiders. One time I attended this event we managed to get 4 hours out of it before the GM came finally and killed the spider. But keep your ears open and you just might stumble into the motherload of terrorantula silks!

    Take care,

If you were killing and killing and never seeing very many spiders for two hours then someone was getting to them first. Maybe there was a ranger tracking them all down, or a couple druids.

If you were killing lots of spiders for two hours and not getting many silks, I would assume there was a high level rogue taking all the silks with pickpocket.

Whoever it was must have left before you did, so you had more success at the end.

I camped the AC last night, and in 4 hours I saw 2 of the whatchamacallit spiders, one had 4, the other had 2...

They must be very rare, I killed a whole heck of a lot of regular spiders and AE'd pretty much anything that walked or crawled.

Being an Erudite wizard I shoulda known what they were for... only kept 2 though

Aye, Sofaltis. I have been to this event on more than 1 occassion. But I have not seen it happen for some time now. Maybe I should request it. Nice belts drop too. =)

As far as someone tracking/stealing the spiders, the only other person in the zone was a druid...guildmate. I would not think he would take them from me nor was he there the whole time. I was the only person in the zone for part of the time.

And yes, they are very rare. I spend an entire KEI there yesterday (with a level 33 necro as the only other person in the zone). 1 Terrorantuling spawned the entire time (4 silks). I was AEing 20 mobs at a time. There were times that there were almost no mobs up that were not static spawns (reads: gypsies, dervish cutthroats, etc). Nada. I must be doing something wrong. =/

<- 52 Erudite Cleric. Just a shame I'm on Bertox

I keep an eye out in the bazaar - buy em for 30pp or less. Saves me the time from farming them, but then I'm lucky that I've come into a bit of money recently (soon to chance as I've ran out of decent stuff to sell ).

I did this for quite a while on a rumor that this would get the AC to spawn..in truth it only got terrorantula to spawn.

A few of the above are right, if its terror silks you want, kill pumas and spiders.

Basically it works like this..at some point a clump of critters has spawned, either pumas or spiders. when you kill the last of the spawned clump, a new clump will spawn, hunt them all down, instaspawn of something else.

it is either pumas, spiders, one of those 2 with a sand giant, terrorantula or 1-2 terrorlings.

I have never seen the AC spawn from doing this, i did however collect 200+ terror silks. You just really need a tracker and run around a lot to find the pumas hiding in the corner =p

I recently spent considerable amounts of time in SRo, camping sand giants for Essence of Sunlight (I have no chance to take on Chromadracs). Here's the result of my observations and the discussions I've had with others camping the area.

                Sand Giants
Most undead are placeholders for sand giants. If you want to spawn SG's, kill any undead you see. I've been able to pin down three fixed spawn points for sand giants, though there may be more. Only one will spawn at a time, though the spawn rate is not constant. I've killed one sand giant, then found another just a minute or two later. A named sand giant (Sandgiant Husam, I think) is on the same spawn table. He's weaker than the normal SG's, and drops a quest item (Kilij battle plans?) in addition to SG-like loot. I've never gotten EoS off Husam.

                Terrorantula
Spiders are placeholders for terrorantulings and Terrorantula. The game will spawn alternate cycles of dune and desert tarantulas. As soon as the last mob of a cycle is killed, another cycle spawns. Eventually, one of the cycles skips and instead spawns a number of terrorantulings. After that, a few more cycles of tarantulas will spawn, followed by either more terrorantulings or Terrorantula. Then the cycle starts over.

All spiders and hill giants (and most undead, for that matter) spawn during the day time only. Spiders and undead will not depop at night, but no new ones will pop. I've never left a sand giant alive long enough to see if it depops but I suspect they'll stay alive too.

                Ancient Cyclops
The ancient cyclops is on a separate spawn table. His placeholders seem to be oddly-named versions of common critters. Here's the list I've been able to identify:
                • "a mummy" as opposed to "a crypt mummy" or "a shrivelled mummy." Tends to spawn near Ortaillus in the extreme northwest corner of the zone.
                • "a madman" instead of "a desert madman"
                • "an asp" instead of "a cistern asp"
                • "orc oracle" instead of "an orc FOO" where FOO is warrior or cleric. Note the lack of "an" in the PH name. This one spawns on the green side of the zone, in the northwesternmost orc camp, I think, and doesn't wander.
                • "a drybone skeleton" instead of "a dry bones skeleton". This one always spawns in the "sunken tower" near the southeast side of the desert, and doesn't wander.

There may be more, but those are the ones I've found so far. All will wander around at random unless noted above.

The AC will only spawn at night, from what I can tell. To my knowledge, which is limited to two AC spawns, he will not spawn more than once a night. Some nights he may not spawn at all. I spoke with a high-level ranger who claimed 14 AC kills, and she confirmed the night-only bit and the uniquely-named PH's.

                Other mobs
I suspect (though I'm not positive) that pumas are on the same spawn table as either the SG's or Terrorantula. They drop LQ pelts often enough that I whack them whenever I see them, irrelevant of what I'm hunting.

A named skeleton will spawn occasionally in the sunken tower. I forget his name, but he also has a pet skeleton. If you talk to him, he will say that this is no place for the living and warn you to leave before you join the dead. No matter what I said to him, he gave the same response. I'm guessing he's a quest NPC, so I ignored him. He is NOT a PH for the AC, as both were up at the same time at one point.

I have no clue whether the sand scarabs and cistern asps are on a particular spawn table or on their own table(s). I tend to ignore them and do well enough on the AC and SG's.

I've also heard a claim from a player that PH's for sand giants exist in the green part of the zone. I've gotten lots of SG's to spawn when I was alone in the zone, and I never touched the green part. Don't know what to make of that player's claim.

A random final note. Sand giants and the ancient cyclops will both attack the dark elf merchants, and both will die VERY quickly to those merchants. I've been KS'ed TWICE by the merchants. /rude! On the other hand, the merchants will not aggro on the giants or the AC.
