  • Rockhopers in DP caves?

I recently got tailoring to 158 and so I have started to sort out some of the post wu's information and have tried hunting rockhoppers.

I found rockhoppers in the caves in DP and it was not bad but the next time I went back I found nothing but some primitive form of human that did drop some acrylic items. What happened to the rockhoppers? I am sure that it was the exact same location that I had visited before.

I then went to Mons Latia (spelling stinks sorry) and found rockhoppers in reasonable numbers but I am still interested in the situation in DP.

Note: I am very happy with all the other pelt drops also because I am working on smithing and saveing up leather padding.

Thanks In Advance to any that can explain what is going on in DP rockhopper caves.

In Dawnshroud Peaks, the Rockhoppers share the cave with Sambata Tribesmen. If the Sambata's are up, the Rockhoppers are down and if the Rockhoppers are up the Sambata's are down. There is 1 mob of each type that you can kill to switch from Rockhoppers to Sambata's and back again. To take down the Rockhoppers and bring up the Sambatas, you need to kill the Age Old Rockhopper. To take down the Sambata's and bring up the Rockhoppers, you need to kill Sambata Tribal Leader Garn. Someone on your server killed the Age Old Rockhopper. The PH for Sambata Tribal Leader Garn is Sambata Tribal Keeper. Kill him to get Garn to spawn. Both the Age Old Rockhopper and Sambata Tribal Leader Garn are on 23 minute timers. Most times if you have killed enough Rockhoppers, you can sit in the cave where the Keeper or Garn spawns and not have any agro from any other mobs because you gain faction, but the Keeper will agro when he spawns if you are visible. No matter your faction the Keeper and a few Sambata's will agro so you need to be aware of that.

    Hope this helps.

      Thanks Pockets,

This is exactly the kind of information I was wanting.

Is Tribal Keeper / Tribal Leader Garn a spawn in a specific room in the cave complex, or must you just clear all the caves to get them to spawn.

I am a 53 shaman with reasonble gear... how hard is Garn in comparison to others in the tribe?

      Thanks again for you help.

Both the Age Old Rockhopper and Sambata Tribal Keeper/Sambata Tribal Leader Garn spawns in the same room. In the very back of the cave/tunnel system, in the big cave there are 2 tunnels that you can continue through. One to the left and one to the right. In the Right cave is where the Age Old Rockhopper and Sambata Tribal Keeper/Sambata Tribal Leader Garn spawns. They spawn in the same location. Right on top of a rock in the middle of the room. To get a better idea as to which cave you are looking for, in the cave in question, when the Sambata's are up, you will see a mob called "A Sambata Tribal Shaman" or something like that. Just look for the Shaman and that will be the cave you need to be in to kill the Keeper to get Garn to spawn.

You do not need to kill any other Sambata's to get the Keeper/Garn to spawn. The Keeper spawns as soon as the Sambata's are up and he's the only one you need to kill to get Garn to spawn. Garn will spawn in the same spot that the Keeper is in.

Just some added info. There have been times that Garn has spawned as soon as the Rockhoppers were taken down, but I've also been in the cave killing the Keeper for 10 hours without getting Garn to spawn, so be ready for a long camp if you want to repop the Rockhoppers.

As for how tough? I could not give you an exact idea. I am a level 59 Thief and I only have Hate Armor at best which is level 47ish. I can kill the Keeper fairly easy although sometimes it's close, but I cannot kill Garn on my own. He's Dark Blue so I shout out whenever I want to pull him outside the caves to repop the Rockhoppers and I get help. As a Shaman, you would probably have an easier time of it with your spells although I don't know if you can solo Garn. You will have to find that out on your own.

If you do kill Garn inside the cave system, you best get yourself outside quickly or get invis because ALL of the Rockhoppers will respawn within a minute or so and will agro you if they see you.

          Thanks again Pockets,

Great Info that will help quite a bit.
When I get home I will just print this out and file it.

You can kill the keeper and Garn because they are both slowable, but the problem is they run when low on health and cannot be snared or rooted. So they may run a bit before they die and bring some friends. It's best to fight them at the back of the cave so they have a chance to die before they run out the front entrance. Garn will be a tough fight for you at 53, I killed him when my shaman was 55 and it was a bit close. Lay the dots on heavy when he is starting to get low on health.

Oh and make sure you slow that shaman pronto. One of his favorite tactics is to root you, run up and start pounding you, not fun when he hasted himself.

When he has good faction with the Sambata's, the Shaman (should not) attack him. Unless his level makes it so he will assist, even with high faction. The Shaman has never assisted the Keeper when I fought him.

He's probably light blue to you thats why. Otherwise all sambata will assist each other.

                  Dvinn,

Thanks for adding your info to Pockets .

I had a nice go at the rockhopper caves in DP last night and the rockhoppers where up.

I got about an equal number of drops for each type of pelt and over half a stack each in about 3 or 4 hours along with a couple of gold bubs of aaxp. I am so glad that the quality pelts drop because I can use them to work on my smithing.

I found the location that Pockets discribed for the spawn of Garn and killed a couple of Elder Rockhoppers at that location.

I had a look at bazaar prices on the superb and flawless and am truly amazed at the value I pulled out of that place last night.

Dvinn, Killing Garn? I have just under 1k ac and 2k hp, a jbb, and a horse, but no epic. If I get Garn slowed do I have a chance? Also, the Sambata do all assist when I am fighting just like the rockhoppers do. Can I "snare" Garn by pulling a normal Rockhopper at the same time. The DPS from the nomal ones is minimal and I have noted that they do not run when assisting each other. If this holds true for Garn then I could clear his room and the room outside except for 1 light blue spawn and then pull him with slow and grab the other to "snare" Garn when he gets down to about 30%.

The Sambata did drop acrylia when I was killing them. Is this a reasonble location to farm acrylia?

                  Thanks for the Help

                    no acrylia for joo
no acrylic either, since thats apparently too advanced for Norrath...
um, anyway, sambatas in dawnshroud dont drop much acrylia. i found a couple pieces on a nearby merchant once but either way its not a good place to get the annoying stuff.

The room you describe you said you found. The one with the Elder Rockhopper, that is the incorrect room. It's the other cave off of the previous cave you came to where you found the Elder Rockhopper cave that is the one where the Age Old and Garn spawn.

I'll try to explain a bit better. If you look out of the cave where the Elder Rockhopper is, and go back into that next cave, you will see 3 tunnels. The one you came from (Elder Rockhopper tunnel), a cave on the left and a cave to the right (the way out of the Rockhopper cave). The cave on the left as you are looking OUT from the Elder Rockhopper cave is the cave where the Age Old and Garn spawn. In that tunnel/cave section, you will see 1 Rockhopper/Sambata inside the tunnel itself and 4 Rockhoppers inside the cave. 3 Rockhoppers sit along the wall and 1 Rockhopper sits on top of a rock. The Rockhopper that sits on top of the rock is the PH for the Age Old Rockhopper. That is also the location where you will find the Keeper and Garn.

As a side note, you may be right Dvinn. I cannot say for certain but I know for myself the Sambata's that are in the cave with the Keeper/Garn have never assisted when I've pulled/killed. All of the Sambata's have been green in that cave except for the Keeper and Garn. I have fought the Keeper many times and pulled Garn a number of times through the caves to the entrance for assistance in killing him. The Keeper has been Light Blue and Blue and Garn has always been Blue. With the exception of those Sambata's that hate everyone no matter your faction, I have never had any other Sambata's assist. I still think that Grug wil not have much of a problem with assisters once he gets his faction up to Kindly, Amiable, Ally, but then most of the Sambata's are probably still blue to him at 53 and might assist until he gets a few more levels.

You will know the Age Old Rockhopper when you see her. She's bigger than the rest and is Grey in color instead of Brown like the others.

I don't know if Garn (he's a sambata by the way) will stay and fight if he's got a buddy next to him, I always kept the shaman and the rest of the cave dead so I don't have to deal with them. I say he will probably still run, but it's just a guess.

As to wether or not you can kill him at 52 I think you can, he's pretty easy to slow plus you have jbb so you don't need too use much mana.

You will have a bigger problem dealing with competition from dire charm druids than you will dealing with Garn.

This thread has a map of the Caves, and a list of what spawns at each point for the named mobs that are used for the Twilight Seas armor quests:

No, he will NOT run if you have another of the same race nearby. Keeping everything dead, but leaving a tribal hunter/rockhopper alive is a decent plan, although I'm not sure if it'll be enough for you to solo the big guy. I've never soloed him, so I'm not sure.

The caves never used to be a good source of acrylia, but that may have changed. It certainly beats just sitting around for 23 minutes. I'm not sure the acrylia drops off anything but the tribal gatherers (or is it foragers, I can't remember which are the low levels in the south of the zone and which are the mean ones in the cave).

I've killed the Keeper a good 30ish, 40ish times... something like that and I actually had 1 Brick of Acrylia drop off of him once, so maybe any and all Sambata's can drop it. I cannot say for certain though as I've never really done any Acrylia farming there.
