  • acrylia studded till 188 or 183?

Ive been trying to decide wether or not i should do acrylia studded masks till 188 or 183. Ive read on this board from a couple different posts that it seems to be harder for people to get skill ups the closer they get to the triv lvl of an item. Is this people being paranoid, or is it something a majority of you would agree on? I hate farming these rockhoppers so the less I have to do the better hehe. As it sits right now im at 170 skill lvl an saving up to do another 60 acrylia studded mask combines(i like to do my combines in big sessions). This should bring me close to the 183 mark. So would I be better off continuing to farm superb till I hit 188? or switch to the flawless hides when i hit 183(i got 100 of these ive saved up while mining superb) and just save the superb for selling?

    Thanks

I have never noticed this "less skillups closer to a trivial" myself, in fact I have always found the increases for the last few points before a trivial generally come quicker.

I am not aware of any conclusive proof, but like many I am fully aware of a myriad of superstitions. An old one was keeping the recipie book open, or equipped or something like that, while combining...

I plan to triv on the Superbs myself, and only after that do combines on the Flawless. It really depends on your goals, the sixty combines you do now, imo, is sixty less you will have to worry about for the future. Or you can just sell them, and get 60 Flawless, they seem to be around the same price in cost, at least on Tarrew Marr.

Btw thats alot of skillups on just 60 combines, i.e from 170 to 183. I have not tailored for awhile (I just collect stuff while focusing on smithing), and my skill is 162, so it would be interesting to know is that kind of skill up ratio the norm now ?

Well, Im basing the projection of 12 skill ups per 60 combines because thast what Ive averaged so far with acrylia studded masks(4 skill ups per 20 combines). Is there a certain point where my skill ups will be harder to get? or does it just slowly get harder and harder?

Very recently I sat down with my main and went from 100's to 200 in Baking, Brewing, Jewelcrafting, and Fletching over the course of a week.

Over that time, while the costs associated with an attempt vary depending on the skill, the actual apparent relative difficulty of a skill gain doesn't change across skills.

Essentially, what I saw was a very reliable jagged curve that starts around the 170's, and becomes VERY apparent in the 180's. In the middle of each 'set of 10' there was a difficult patch, followed by the 'round 10' being fairly quick, while the number of combines per skillup kept getting, overall, lower.

To give an example - in each skill, in the 150-160's I had a reliable 2 gains per 20 attempts, around 175, that dropped to 1 per 20. Around 180, it came back to 2 per 20, then dropped down to 1 per 40 around 185, then back to 1 per 20 around 190, dropped back to 1 per 80 around 195, then back to 1 per 40 for the last few points to 200.

I wouldn't even mention this, but it happened in all four skills I worked with, and I'm seeing the same pattern develop in Pottery, Smithing, and Tailoring as I work them up. Note that there is still the possibility that this is entirely a huge fluke, and there is no such pattern. Your milage may vary.

One thing MOST people will agree on is that as you get into the upper reaches (190+) the skillup per combine rate does drop quite a bit.
"You mustn't do that, it's Evil!"
"Then how do I save the world?"
        "Courage! Honor! Faith! Nobility!"
"But I haven't GOT any of those!"

From about 168 until I trivialed Acrylia Studded, I had been doing both Acrylia Studded AND Acrylia Reinforced combines. I see no reason to hold off on the Acrylia Reinforced until you trivial Acrylia Reinforced at 188. The quicker your skillups, the better your chance for those harder to make items.

I don't have any records previous to when I was at 173, but I started posting here my results of skillup runs at that time. At 173, I made a skillup run that took me to 184. If it was not for the Flawless Hides I had at the time, I would have only been 178 when I ran out of Superbs. I had 64 of them at the time and had 84 Flawless. On my next skillup run it took me 27 Superbs to trivial Studded from 184 to 188. How many more Superbs would I have used if I had to make the skillup run while still at 178? Would I have used up all of my Superbs to try for 10 skillups to trivial Studded? I don't know but one thing for sure, I'm glad I did those Flawless and didn't save them until after I trivialed Studded.
