  • Superb Silks and skilling up

If you had a limitless (and free) supply of superb silk, would this be a decent skill-up path from 195 to 300?

If so, what would you make to maximize the return spent on materials for the combine?

I'm specifically wondering if you can sell templates back to a vendor to reduce the cost spent on silk filament?

    Yes you can sell templates.

You would save a lot more cash, would in fact profit tremendously, if you make eminent symbols and sell them in the bazaar. Exalted and sublime are the hot items right now (wish I had those darn quests done), but eminent still sells steadily. If your race wears silk or leather armor, make elaborate as well. Again, not the hot item, but I would replenish my stocks about twice a week if i had time to do so.

Actually, I take it back, don't make any eminent symbols! I just noticed we're on the same server!

Yeh, we're on the same server, but no fear- I rarely have the time to tskill that much, and my 2 bazaar mules are already stocked to the gills with elegant and elaborate human chain / plate armor that I need to sell before I even think about symbols. Plus, I'm not keen on farming another tskill item to make those symbols - I know I can get the silks readily, but the other component - not so much.

I know I could probably sell the templates in the baz, but can you vendor them?

You can. They sell for ~90% of the storebought materials' cost. So, you shouldn't lose a lot on them.

Edit: Superb Silk Template sellback prices aren't in the DB...but Superb Leather is:
For Gloves, storebought materials cost 65.622p. Sellback is 59.524p. 90.7%.

Templates sell back for the same as the filaments.

So only know off top of my head the Mythical Filament is 131plat to buy and sells back for slightly less...think 110 or so. Merchant greed. That is the same price that the template will sell back for. Considering the rest of the vendor parts are really cheap, it is not that bad...you just lose the "cost" of the silks.

You can do that if you had endless supply. You might even be able to find someone with slightly lower levels of silk/leather and trade/sell to them and the buy the excellent or fine silks to work on first. Cheaper vendor parts and better chance of success = more plat saved.

As far as what to make... bracers and gloves are the lowest trivials and only require 1 leather (2 silks) per combine.

Thank you both for that excellent info.

I had thought about possibly trading the superbs for a lower level silk until 250 or so to increase my chances at success, I just need to find someone that has 1200 lower level silks .

Good to know the vendor selling won't lose me as much pp as smithing did!

Should have been the same situation for smithing.

The templates from smithing sell back for the cost of the coal (minus merchant greed).

Remember though you will need 2 silks for each 1 leather. So you may find leather is cheaper.

Assuming you really do have an endless supply of the silks or pelts, I'd suggest selling a few of them and buying the finishing components (marrow or spinneret fluid). Finished armors have zero sellback to vendors, but they usually sell to players for good cash. More importantly, they have a massive skillup bonus -- 5% on Intricate and 10% on Elaborate. This can double or triple your chance to get a skillup as you approach 300 skill. This will make a huge difference as your skill goes past 280. What might take 30-40 combines per skillup on average with the templates will take you 15-25 combines with the finished armors -- not to mention that you're now getting two skillup opportunities per item, one from the template and one from the armor.

Now that's an even better idea. Actually make pp doing tskills? Unthinkable!

My mage is slowly making his way thru tailoring right now in about the same range. You might want to invest in natural silk (max triv 215) and pristine silks/animal pelts for skill ups to around 250 and save the superb for the really hard points to get. I have a huge and varied supply of other stuff I've squirreled away over the years so I'm also making LoY culturul robes, GoD whips, power belts from DoD, reinforced acrylia armor and several types of velious tailoring. I plan to exhaust those supplies before going back to the cultural armor route on that toon.

Good advice about making the end-user armor for the skill up bonus, but if you buy the market out of superb spinnerets I'm going to plant a jester by your vender every single day!
