  • Coarse spider silk

I know that this is insanely rare, and its going to be a project for me to camp some. That being said, what's the best way to get them? Do they drop more often in one instance than another? Any suggestions/advice?

    Thanks

They drop mainly in spider-themed missions. I actually enjoyed the spider missions, they were well-designed and I looted 7 coarse spider silks before anyone knew what they were for. It's a pity that nobody does them anymore, Creators make me nauseous now.

The lower-level spider mission is in Lavaspinner's Lair, I think the name is "Lavaspinner Locals" but I'm not certain. You kill random spiders until chests pop, then loot the chests until you've collected enough items to win. The spiders don't hit very hard, but adds are common, so bring an offtank, a crowd-control class, or a feign puller if you're not too well geared. Every mob is a spider, so this is probably your best chance at the silks.

The mid-level spider mission is in Ascent, "Death Comes Swiftly". You clear a mix of pumas, drakes, spiders, kirin, and goblins to get to the spider's lair, which is full of spiders and has a boss spider mob. I highly recommend buffing poison resist for this mob (Tribunal and DMF preferably) because the boss spider's DoT hurts pretty badly.

Both spider missions take 30-45 minutes for an average group and are comparable to Creator in difficulty, once you have some practice and know what to expect.

Oh, and since we're both on Quellious, feel free to send me an invite to these missions anytime, I'd be glad to show you the ropes.

Locals has never dropped either MDS, GDH or CSS for me any time I did them with my groups. (and I've done a lot, we had 3 people working on Arachnid Eyes for their GM tasks). I'm pretty certain they do not drop in LSLocals.

However, I have seen a solid amount of CSS drop from Death Comes Swiftly. The other option is the nest, but that's just harder didn't ever really notice a better drop rate.

Side note to all of this, if Death Comes Swiftly offered the same crystals that Creator does (or like the 41 that LavaSpinners Locals use to), it would get farmed a lot more. 10 crystals less doing DCS for a slightly tougher mission in the same time frame as Creator is the sole reason why DCS isn't done more often.

there is an evil side mission that goes into the "forest" area of the nest, i have no clue what it is called but i belive its a collect 10-15 of 3 different items. in this missin there be at least 20 spiders that respawn, and its from one run though of that mission that i obtained at least 4 silks.

You're probably right about Lavaspinner Locals, I was doing so many DoN missions when they first came out that I lost track of what dropped in each instance.

Death Comes Swiftly... is this mission kitable by a necro or wizard? I'm thinking about grabbing some silks for a friend when im not busy AA'ing and whatnot. These are for GM silk armors correct?

I blew off the Grandmaster armor and just made Master. That cost me a total of 15 hp/mana and a little AC.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I can also tinker the armor, but the swatches still require a reasonably high tailoring skill (mine's only about 175).

My gnome has I think 188 in smithing and tailoring (wherever the master subcombine trivials). He's had probably a 90% success rate on both.

As far as the Master vs GM armor goes.. I'm actually surprised at how many people who arent a warrior/sk/paladin want GM stuff. (Aside from the excessively rare ones - Reptile teeth/hides for example). More AC and a few HPs for a difference of 28-75k+? I don't complain cause I make money off it.. but it still surprises me, heh.

Yeah it's a bit strange people wants to throw out another 50k for +15 ac and a few stats. I made a master curiass and parts for my beastlord.

                      Matter of pride, to me.

                      I spent a year getting my skill to the point I could make things for myself (tailoring) and not having the raw material available as they should be, especially at this late date, is {silly}

I know someone's working on it, and there are priorities, but something like this deserves an interim fix. Ngreth's pretty smart. I'm sure he could come up with something fair if given the permission to do so.

EQ is a game of inches, every couple of AC / HP / misc. stat gained on an item of gear helps.

Entire expansions rest on providing loot with 20hp more than the expansion before.

Very true, however, this should be fixed, because its just stupid to have things be this difficult for 10-20 hp/mana when its several expansions back, and it is no longer great gear.

while i completely agree that the spider silk should not be so rare and constantly see casters whinning in their inability to make GM armor while plate classes pick it up in the bazaar for cheap, i definitely would not say that the gear is subpar. straight comparison of the gear to demiplane even coa gear would bring you to that conclusion, however with the introduction of the lastblood / bazu augs the GM armor has had an intense revitalization.

with last blood augs the GM armor is better then COA armor and just slightly less hp/mana then demiplane armor...however it has more AC then demiplane armor. additionally with the ability to place your choice of focus effect (spell or melee) onto the piece of gear and it becomes an amazing piece of loot with great stats and versitility to last thru future gear upgrades based on moving lastblood augs around.
