  • Cultural combines tougher for skillups?

I averaged about 1 skillup in 15-20 from around 260 to 290 doing master level combines as an erudite.

I did a batch of Erudite cultural at 291...a round 70 combines and no skillups at all. Is cultural penalized for skillups or DoN bonused as far as skillups go? I'm done with DoN skillups regardless... 3 Nightmare Aracnid swatches per combine just isn't going to happen.

IIRC, DoN master and grandmaster have increased chances to skillup over all other recipes.

70 combines is hardly a bad run. If you were getting a skillup every 15-20 combines for 260-290 then you're doing exceptionally well overall.

I dunno atm.. I would have to actually check what the calculator % is + the bonus on master's stuff. Even 15-20 per skill up seems like more combines than usual...

At the Fan Faire, the devs were saying Master armor would get 5% bonus and GM armor would get 10%.

Aye, and as of recently (last patch?), the bonus is:

Master: (regular chance to skill up + 5)%
GM: (regular chance to skill up + 10)%

Personally speaking, I've gone from 252 to 294 mostly on DoN GM tailoring combines over about a 2 month period of time:

1 skill-up for making my lone tae ew hide sack (happy bonus).
2 skill-ups from don master combines
            1 skill-up from meldstone
38 skill-ups from don gm combines

And, I get to sell the product as well, making this a no-loss skill-up path. All it requires is patience. I didn't even have start-up capital (I literally had maybe 3k to my name after my final skill-up run in smithing and had already sold off all my alts' gear). I just offered my services for combines (7k per successful symbol) and made enough that way to buy enough hides to carry my own symbol lines, and expanded from there. Everytime one sells is another opportunity to skill-up. I farmed othmir's once and quickly decided I would not be doing that path.

              where and how

38 skill ups from gm combines. assuming 1 skill up every 10 attempts ( phenomenal rate) you have to do 380 combines. in 60 days you picked up enough for 380 combines. I am stunned by that number.

I can pick up 2 coarse silks every 4 hours farming. A glossy drake hide once every 4 hours is a grand find. there are that many hides and silks on your server? I am missing some farmers dream spot perhaps? where does all this come from?

I'm a dark elf, so we only have silk for tailoring, but since silk is a no show, I started making GM augs with tailoring using glossy drake hides instead of MDS namely to raise my skill but also because glossies are cheaper than MDS.

I've actually only done 201 GM aug combines via tailoring, so I've had an actual skill-up rate of 1 in ~5 combines, or ~19%. The RNG has been very kind for once. The calculated (eqtraders calc) skill-up rate was about 14% for me when the patch went in, and of course the closer I get to 300 the closer it gets to 10% in theory.

I buy all my glossies in the bazaar from other sellers. It would be a lot nicer to buy them with a /buyer, but alas, I only have one account, so I have to buy from sellers who have buyers, which means I pay a little extra, but generally no more than 20k per glossy, unless there are just none to be found at that price. I'm probably the no. 1 buyer of glossies from traders atm... ~200 (I did get one or two as drops, or maybe a couple as trade for payment) over the past 2 months. That would be an average of 3.35 per day bought (though I bought a little more since I have a running stock).

edit: realized I didn't buy all 201 combines worth of materials since I did a few combines for others, probably more like 3 a day, which would put it at about 180 glossies.

1 in 10 would be a 10% chance to skill up... which is phenominal ... is also wrong. He's chance to skill up would have been somewhere in the 15-17% area due to the fact that the bonus adds 10%, not changes it to 10%. That change was made 3 patchs or so ago.

You are right you would save some money, but then where would I be? You are my number one buyer Though soon as I get my cleric to 65, you will make all your money back.

So why don't we just make a deal, give me a full set of GM symbols at cost of materials

Last I heard it was commonplace for 1 skillup every 50-80 combines for the 250-300 run.

                      Certainly not 1 every 15-20.

Went from 251 to 294 doing nothing but master level armor. It took approximately 500 combines. I know I went through two stacks of sleeve patterns (200 per stack), 100 glove patterns and 20 or so leggings patterns. It comes out at around 13 combines per skillup.

Had 415 wis the whole time and +5% modifier equipped the whole time.

I got a bit lucky at the end, got 292-294 in 4 combines

Then promptly failed at GM cuirass... Even spent a day exping to get tailoring mastery 3 before cuirass attempt.

It took me 3 long weekends in ssra to get the required shissar scales.
