  • Tailoring for the Lame....err warriors.

As many warriors know, we have lots of trouble farming supplies to do tradeskills. Many that I've talked to won't even try. I have been trying for over a year and a half know to get my grimel earring skills up high enough to finish it. I'm stuck on tailoring at 131 skill with very little farmed supplies. Now with the BRIGHT ones at EQ, they have changed tradeskills so that it is harder to get supplies by nerfing drop rates and changing trivials. Its enough to bring an end to trying to skill up. I was working on my fletching in AC farming the acrylia ore and farmed 35 stacks of shafts. A ranger was there and farmed 34 stacks of shafts. This was a month before Don expansion came out. He did his combines and netted 35 skill ups. I took longer to farm my stacks and did them either the first or second weekend after Don expansion went live. I only recieved either 16 or 17 skill ups. Thank you EQ for messing things up again for me and wasting even more of my time.

10-3-05 added note. The ranger told me his highest wisdom and intell. and it was way below 300 and his dex. was 290 if I remember right. When I did my combines, my wisdom was 315. Way higher than his scores and I got screwed very bad on skill ups. /rude EQ/Sony.

I've looked up more on tailoring and have come up with this. Any one able to put some imput on what would be better, please add. Remember I'm a warrior who cant farm plat and who has to kill mobs one at a time, hand to hand. Thanks EQ once again for having race specific trade skills and not class specific.

Here's what I've come up with.

    I personally GM'ed ( back in the days of 250) all of my ex's tradeskills ( Warrior/Dwarf).
I must say that I did alot of GoD tailoring with him as he ripped through the Hynids much easier than I could ( being a cleric).
The trivals are nice and it's not far to travel either. Respawns take 5mins so by time you clear they should be due to respawn again.
    Keep anything from the manes/blood/hides.

Not sure of your level but I also farmed CS with him. Wyverns are very very easy. Even better now with heal potions to top you up.
If you need velium, go to the Tizmak caves in GD. They drop velium weapons that can be smithed down to pieces plus you make a little spare change.

    Hope that helps a little.

Oh edit... Other thing. Get your wis or int up.. it helps

Menssia 75 Cleric (High Elf) Sal3, GM 300 in all base tradeskills (except Research)
    (Terror Australis - 'The Rathe/Karana')

You're looking for minimum 220, or more if you want. You're at 131. The nerfs to trivials effect people past 252. Tailoring (while you're decrying it's unfairness based on race) is actually much easier for you at higher levels because of the component for your masters swatch.. shissar scales, arguable the easiest masters to farm in abundance.

      try these:

Spider silks (crag - green at 29? and carrion - green at 20? spiders in ek drop tons) will take you to 158. If you have to do them solo... give up (or gain levels).
Studded Acrylia to 188 - requires acrylia and superb hopperhides.. both farmed. If you can farm these even moderately effective, you're set.
Expert Cultural to 222 - HQ cat pelts... Stonebrunt cats, save the other hides to make padding (sells for decent plat to smithers)
Reinforced Acrylia to 242 - same as studded. You'll be getting flawless hides while you get superb save them till later... at least till you trivial the superb ones.
Tigerraptor to 252 - raptors are easy, the drake eggs might not be. you'll need a forager who spends a lot of time in skyshrine, tov, or western wastes.
Arctic Wyvern to 252 - wyverns are easy past 55-57, depending on your gear. you can fish the oil (anyone can that can get to cs).
Masters Cultural to 300 - again, easiest cultural component to gather in abundance. If you're reasonably geared at level 70, a bot healer is all you'll need.

Ribbons if you have plenty of plat to throw away - money, money, money.

      Ignore -
Phase Spider Thread - drop rate is not good enough for a skillup path, and the spiders actually are the meanest mob listed so far in this post.
Night Terror Wristband - ok.. these spiders are the meanest listed in this post. fast hitters, 400+.. only a handfull spawn every 18-20 minutes? and, the silks can be sold for much more plat you could use to buy shissar scales.. or whatever. then, you farm the mephit blood (past the gargs.. oops, these guys are worse than the spiders.), and the metal (again, past the gargs), and pay 210 a pop minimum to have a friend make the symbols. the good news is the nightmare sap is pretty common.

It's not impossible to do tradeskills as a warrior. That's not to say it easy either.

The first thing you need to do is define your goal. Its my impression that your goal is to finish your Aid Grimmel earring. To do so you need a tailoring skill of at least 220 (unmodded if I recall - its been a long while since I did mine) + the appropriate flags. I will assume you have the flags or can get them easily enough.

Now that you have a goal in sight, the most important thing you can do is build a solid wisdom kit you wear for skilling up. In my opinion, you should max your wisdom without the help of food/drink and/or buffs. I say this simply because there will come a time when one or both of those items are unavailable.

Its very easy to build a solid wisdom kit for very little plat in the bazaar. For a few Kpp you can get an Emerald Dragonscale BP, an Acrylia Studded Cloak, a Bracelet of Sense and a Matchless Dragonhorn Bracer. Those 4 items are +55 wisdom. There is plenty more wisdom to buy for cheap if you look for it. Just search bazaar for warrior usable items with wisdom as the stat you are looking for.

Menssia stressed the importance of int/wis gear and I will back that up 100%. Biggest bang for the buck, hands down, is wisdom. Int is tougher to find in the +10 range without getting a drop or spending some serious plat.

Once you have your wis kit, its time to seriously evaluate your skill level in farming/soling. No one can do that for you, except you. I can solo/farm quite effectively in most zones that drop tradeskill items including OoW/DoN. Granted, I am positive I have better gear and utility items than you do.

I will go off on a slight tangent here, but it is relevant. When soloing, do it how you feel comfortable. Most people will tell you that as a warrior, if you don't have a means to slow a mob and snare a mob you won't do very well solo. To put it bluntly, don't believe the hype.

A few points then back on subject -

#1 Don't depend on slow. In fact, use a mob's swing speed to your advantage. DS potions + DS clicky + some added DS through items or augs far outweighs slowing a mob if you can counter the damage. I can get my self DS (with a potion) upto 82. If a mob hits me 50 times a fight unslowed then that's 4100 additional damage I do not have to do. Slowing the same mob can cut the damage done by my DS in half. That's more work I have to do...

#2 Using a mob's swing speed to do damage does mean you have to counter more damage. The easiest way to counter damage is not to take it and the easiest way to avoid damage is through mitigation effects and runes. There is a mitigation effect aug you can purchase in DoN and there are several weapons that proc runes (or a rune effect) available through out the game. I use a rune 3 proc (just one) and that is plenty enough to counter enough damage that I do not have much if any downtime and it allows me to fight multiple mobs. Granted my AC and hps are higher than yours but rest assured (unless you are under level 5) I have probably soloed effectively in exactly what you are wearing.

#3 Snare is for druids! Don't depend on it. It takes some practice, but soloing without snare is very easy, however you must fight more than one mob. Pull 2 mobs then fight one mob until its 10-12% and switch to the other. When the second mob dies the first will turn to run but will be moving so slow it won't get more than a few clicks from you. This is another reason I dislike slow when soloing. If you can't handle 2 mobs hitting on you for the duration of both kills, simply grab the second when the first one is at about 20%. Get the second to your kill spot and switch back to the first until its at 10-12% then switch as explained above. The key to not relying on snare is simply not to ever have less than 2 mobs hitting on you when they will turn to run.

#4 Learn exactly what ALL of your discs do. Some of the "crappy" ones for most situations are positively insanely powerful for soloing. Make sure you read the effects on Shocking Defense and Aura of Runes specifically. Ironically these are usually near the bottom of most "lists" for worth and function.

All of that being said, in my opinion, you should stick to the expert level of DoN armor. Just kill anything that moves in the zones that can drop HQ cat pelts. You can pepper other combines in there easy enough, but if you have the flags needed for Aid Grimmel then you can without a doubt farm everything needed for expert DoN armor.

Expert DoN armor will take you to 222 skill in tailoring which is plenty to attempt the combine. If you intend to take it further than 222, save the painful farming (just about anything else on your list post 200) for when it really counts. Don't forget to buy a geerlok when you hit 210 skill. Equip it and do EP silk and leather swatches. This does require 220+ in brewing (to make the curing agent) and since you are doing Aid Grimmel you probably already have it. Strands are very cheap off vendors and you get to double dip. Once making the silk swatch and again using those swatches to make the leather pieces. You can only do these for 2 points though. But it is 2 points you don't have to get by farming much of anything.

Don't get me wrong, expert DoN armor will require some cash. However lots of items drop in the same zones (as the pelts you need) that people will buy in quantity. Spider Silks, Eggs, other Skins etc. etc. All of these are fairly easy sales in the bazaar. When you do need to supplement your farming with cash (and you will) take a trip to the bazaar first. Check out items you KNOW you can farm and what they sell for. With some research you can easily find an effective cash farm with little or no risk. Just remember...an item that sells for 1 Kpp but takes 2 hours to get (rarity of difficulty) is worth far less than 1 item that sell for 50 pp but can get 20 of in 15 minutes.

Trust me, when you finish up your earring, you will have an item you will have for a good while. I have a dozen pieces of loot from Anguish, but I still wear my Aid Grimmel earring fulltime.

Hang in there and your earring will get finished!

Thanks so much for the information. I have two bags full of wisdom gear already. I can get my wisdom to 320 just with the gear and with the stat food and drink and tribute, i can max. it out.

I have all the flags to get my grimel earrings, so thats no problem. Its just been trying to get tailoring drops to get my skill above 131. I have about 50 each of the rockhopper hides, flawless and the other top one.

Thanks for the info. on the DS. I never thought I could get that much added damage to mobs. I have one weapon that procs rune 1 I think.

As for my gear, IMO it sucks alot. I have only won about 10 percent of the Don missions that I have been the tank on. And most of the time when I have been LFG, they ask me for my Hp and AC and that will change their minds on having me as the tank. Screw you EQ/Sony.

          Heres my magelo. http://www.magelo.com/eq_view_profile.html?num=350640

I am going to keep an eye on this post and copy all the info. and look it all up so that when my next chance to farm what I need, Im all ready and able.

Kinda off topic, but it hits on something I wrestle with. I am a decent lvl66 (at least per eqrankings), but I would be a sucky lvl70. Since mobs scale to level, not gear, in missions. Would it not be better to park it at lower levels and work aa's or push forward knowing that I would fall further down the comparative scale?

I was going to stop at 67 or 68 level at the time I was going through them. But I was a member of a guild and they pushed for everyone to level up to 70 to join raids. I did as guild was pushing for everyone to level. But I think it was a mistake. If you are getting good augments and gear, not just gear, then I would level up. Figure to be at 10,000 Hp at 70 level and if you are not getting the drops then stop leveling, IMO. I couldn't even tank my own Tipt trial in God, the group had to call in a paladin to get us to the end. The enchanter, old player that I had grouped with allot, lost control of his pet at the very end near the bridge. We wiped with only a rogue lived and got flagged. Thanks EQ for nothing.

I have a AE weapon, but most of them only hit 4 mobs max. The only PB AE weapon I know of is the Earthshaker and those are rare in bazaar and cost 80k+ of which farming plat. is hard. 80k would take me almost a year to get, if I did get a good drop, it might only take me 6 months then.

Funny, druids and wizards when velious first came out could farm pelts and quest gems in CS. I have read and was told that either of those two classes could, just on the gems, farm 10k plat in 4 hours. Since velious first came out, EQ has nerfed the drop rates twice for sure but I think it is 3 times now. It was impossible to farm there at 60 level with only velious level quest gear of which I still have a bracer that I still wear. It was way hard to farm there at 65 level and I have yet to try it at 70 level.
