  • Feasibility of Arctic Wyvern armor

I'm a 53 ranger, recently maxed out on acrylia reinforced armor. I had been planning on moving on next to the arctic wyvern-hide armors, but I'm not sure what level of difficulty I'd have getting the hides. I've killed enough giants that the Thurg dwarves /con kindly to me, I'm assuming that I'm not KoS to CoV. Anyone care to share your thoughts on getting those hides?

And the most pressing concern to me right now is: what's the best way to get to Cobalt Scar (aside from bumming a port) that won't get me a quick trip back to the soulbinder? (I had CS and Iceclad mixed up in my head - not too good with Velious geography I guess.)

Here's a bit more information. Buff yourself with sow, levitation, invisibility and enduring breath, if possible. In Plane of Knowledge, take the Great Divide stone, which is right next to the Nexus stone at the eastern edge of the zone.

Once in Great Divide, head south southwest till you intersect the river running north-south through the center of the zone. Follow the river all the way south till you see a miniature castle in the water at the entrance to a cave at the southern edge of Great Divide. Touch the castle to zone into Plane of Mischief.

Hold still when you first zone into Plane of Mischief and look ahead. Reach out for the distant trees ahead and just slightly to your left. Once you get a "too far away" message, move ahead to touch the one tree in the forest that will zone you into Cobalt Scar.

As you zone into Cobalt Scar, you will find yourself under water and, unless you're invisible, possibly under attack by sharks. Surface, swim east to the shore, then climb the steep cliffs to the plateau where the wyverns are. On the beach before the cliffs you'll see the othmir that tradeskillers hunt for tailoring drops.

Good luck hunting the wyvern and beware roaming cobalt drakes!

I did cobalt drake belts instead because they are cheeper to make and the belts sell better since they are all/all and not just shammies only. However drake hides are more rare for sure. I just got burnt out makeing velium studds.:-)

Thanks for all the information, guys. I had no idea about the shortcut through the Plane of Mischief, that makes life a lot easier.

Anybody else notice the zone-out tree missing from PoM a week or 2 back. (Have not been back recently to double check for it.)

If I clicked on the open space where the tree used to be, I would zone as normal. Most confusing.

I think I am becoming cynical, because my first thought was that SoE was concerned that people were skilling tailoring too fast on Wyverns, so they tried to hide the way in. (Note to self: Stop being cynical, hehe.)

The Cobalt Scar portal tree missing? Hmm, odd. I've been through that zone during the time period you describe, and I didn't notice anything amiss. It simply could have been a graphical glitch on your system. Things like that have been known to happen before.

As for SoE making it more difficult for people to perform tailoring skillups on arctic wyvern armor, I really doubt that they would do that by removing the portal tree in the Plane of Mischief. You see, SoE has already made it more difficult by nerfing the arctic wyvern armor trivials, so people can no longer use it as a path to reach a tailoring skill of 300.

Jorianon, in regards to your initial query as to the feasibility of arctic wyvern armor as a skillup path, I am assuming you have reached a tailoring skill level of 242 by skilling up on acrylia reinforced armor. If so, you can indeed use arctic wyvern armor as a skillup path, but please bear in mind it's a short lived one. After the tailoring trivial nerf, arctic wyvern armor (all pieces) trivial at 252.

The way I read it, he was asking whether he could kill the wyverns to get the hides, not if he could use them as a skill up path.

I never tried as a ranger. Did them with my druid way back when. But you could probably kite them. Behind the ring where druids port in is relatively safe, as long as you watch for the drakes that cross that path. That's where I kited.

You'll be able to kite them. My 52 druid quad kites them and hasn't died yet. Two things. Keep lev on yourself and drag them to the beach to kite them. Second, don't kill the named drake or wyvern and your CoV faction will not be harmed. I've killed hundreds of the wyverns and they're still at the same con as when I started.

No, I used it last night.

Hmmm. musta been an issue with my graphics card then. Upgraded my driver. Will have to go back and see if tree is back for me. Was only peculiar because all the other trees were still there.

Jorianon clearly mentioned that he had maxed out tailoring on acrylia reinforced armor, and also mentioned that he was interesting in moving onto arctic wyvern armor next. Why else would he want the hides? As for his ability to kill them, even a level 53 ranger arriving in Cobalt Scar for the very first time really wouldn't have any difficulty in snaring and bow kiting the wyverns unto oblivion. The very first time I went there (as a level 55 magician), it didn't take me long to learn the crucial things (watch for the named critters and roaming drakes, pull using spells and not the pet, don't fight too close to the edges of the cliffs). Heck, Jorianon would probably make quicker work of them than my magician could have at that level, and get some experience as a bonus.

Yes, that is what I had meant. I realize that this will only be a 10 point path, but I like to do things in small chunks so that I don't get bored. I'll worry about post-252 when I get that last skillup.

I went there last night to check things out, and had no problems with the wyverns. I was definitely being overcautious in not coming here earlier (but I had heard nasty things about those drakes...) I cast lev on myself and pulled down to the beach while those cute Othmir looked on. The only difficulties I had were all the other people with whom I had to share the spawns.

Too bad they're not animals - then this would really be a cakewalk.
