Crushed diamond dust is so incredibly rare that master symbols are not even remotely considered a skillup path (have gathered 10 since DoN release, farming the bazaar on 2 servers) at least until they change the skillup chance on 'rare' combines, if symbols are included in that change.... hope to hear an update on that at FF, since its been a long while since the devs have said anything about the rest of tradeskill re-envisioning plan...

Spent nearly 3 hours farming othmir this morning....zero skillups, yay... =)

Dwarves are worse off than Halflings even. No old cultrural, no robes, and no DoN tailored armor. /whine.

            Shissar Scales Wha?

Basically, everyones greatest idea to get to 300 is Shassar scales making master armor/symbols etc. Your correct in saying that the scales are simple to get, i agree. BUT, the problem Ive had with that is the crushed diamond dusts. They have to be the hardest by far to farm in those combines. Maybe im missing something....but this can't be the greatest way to go

Don't make symbols... just make the armor.

Right, but then you would be doing smithing. Shissar scales are only used in smithing for making master symbols (or so I think). Am I correct? If so then whats all this shissar talk lol. I have moer than I know what to do with and need to get tailoring up . Im at 265 and LF a good way to go up.

                    Rejoice, for you are incorrect

If you are of one of the lucky races, then shissar scales are used in your (tailored) master level swatch (triv 182 I think), and those swatches are used to make your master level armor! (up to and beyond 300)

                    The lucky races are:
                    Human (Master's Sagacious Swatch)
Vah Shir (Master's Vah Anima Swatch)
                    Wood Elf (Master's Brambleborn Swatch)
                    Nichola Smith
                    Archon of Erollisi Marr
                    Tunare

Despite being a human, I still don't feel lucky. (Lucky in contrast to some other races? Sure, I guess) The push to 300 with DoN cultural is still insane even as a human.

I was in Ssra for several hours last night, and collected a grand total of 10 scales. I purchased 200+ scales on my buyer over the last month++. I waited for the 'minimum skillup' patch, thinking erroneously that this would improve skillup chances at all skill levels for master/gm gear, as opposed to just 250+. (ie. thought it was adding an additional 5% chance for skillup, not a minimum skillup chance which only came into play when your normal chance fell below that amount). I converted all of my scales to swatches, (losing 10 of them in the process... yes, the sum total of my gains from farming that night), and then went ahead and did 90 combines, (at roughly ~1500 pp per stack of combines, not counting scale cost), and...

4 skillups. Started at 235, ended at 239.

I don't feel lucky. At best I feel 'less shafted' than the non-shissar scale races. I don't think a positive term like lucky needs to ever be applied to this tradeskill. :P

I would have waiting until you had at least finished velious tailoring before you used your DoN supplies. Especially after the velium weapon conversion patch, velium is much easier to farm than even shissar hides.

In my opinion, the minimum skillup rate is in the order of 5%, and not 10% (I don't have any data to back me up, just the feeling I get from what I read here).

Following this logic, and since step 2 is 5% chance at 270, I'd not use DoN tailoring as a skillup path until at least drop rate for your race compares with velious drops.

For instance, I'm High-Elf and I estimate I can farm Storm Volaas Hair a quarter of the rate of Othmir fur. Therefore I have decided I'd use Othmir until it gets nerfed or I reach 295, since it's still faster for me to farm their fur.

If the minimum skillup rate was 10% on this recipe, than it would be worth it at 270+.

It is unfortunate that SoE doesn't disclose this information, since I bet I'm not the only one to be conservative and to stick to Velious tailoring. Rumors about good/bad recipes will plague the game for quite a while.

You are correct. Your Master's armor, which requires Storm Volaas Hairs, has only a 5% bonus on it. The only combines currently with the 10% bonus is Grandmaster level DoN cultural, as per what I have read.

5% confirmed by devs, or hearsay?
