  • I edited the first book text to show how it ACTUALLY works!

Ok.. Mebbe my High Elf brain can't understand Wood Elfese.. so here are the three books:

This is my take on what the book ought to say. Changed text is in RED below!

Culturally Inspired Armor - part 1
    by Garven Juli

I knew the moment I finished reading the books and looking at the stunning symbolism of my people that I would have to make armor based on this work. The book is all the rage in Kelethin, so I probably don't have to tell you about it. Go out and find a copy for yourself. The patterns in it are amazing. I think I've figured out a good way to make the armor, and I want to share it with you.

First you'll need material. If you want to work in silk, get a silk swatch, if you work in leather then a medium quality cat pelt will do. For this, though, you'll need some special embroidery work. Get a small spool of Mithril thread and your Fier`Dal needle [no such thing.. It's Koada`Dal needle]. Work the Mithril thread into the swatch in your Fier`Dal sewing kit, freehand it, just make sure that you weave the thread in somewhat evenly to add strength to the swatch.

I know that the other races all use the standard silk swatches for this work, but I've been hearing about the use of other animal pelts for leather. I guess that's not unusual. Humans, High Elves, those filthy Dark Elves, Half Elves, Erudites and Frogloks all use cat pelts. I assume that decision is made for availability and size reasons. The larger races, Barbarians, Trolls, and Ogres all use medium quality bear skins, while all the shorter folks use medium quality wolf skins. There are some oddballs, like the Vah Shir who might be unwilling to use cat skins, they use medium quality hides from those rock hoppers they have. Iksar find sabertooth tiger hides easy enough to come by, and so they use those.

Of course, the simpler silk and medium quality pelts are only suited for journeyman work with these patterns. I'll try to discover what works for better quality armor later if I can.

Once you have your silk or leather, you'll need a pattern. I had to do some favors for someone to get a copy for myself, you'll have to find someone to get your pattern book from.

I'ts worth the effort. The pattern book will show you how to make patterns.

Once you have a few patterns and some material, you're ready to get to work making your armor. This will be good armor, but later I'll show you how to make it special.

Smaller pieces, like wristguards, gloves, and sleeves, will only require one swatch. You'll need two for helmets or boots, and three for something as large as a robe or pants. <<< Old: You'll also need an extra swatch of your base material, one without the Mithril stitching, to fill in the joints and for backing. <<<Replace the preceeding with: Be sure to use a large spool of mithril thread and your elven needle to sew it all together! >>> Follow the pattern and you'll produce a fine template.

Most of use would do this in a sewing kit. For some reason those tiny Gnomes work in a toolbox at this stage. I've seen them throw some of the craziest things into those kits, but they seem to come out with functional enough armor, if you don't mind the whirring and ticking noises they sometimes make. Only a Gnome would understand, I guess.

    <End of book 1>

So.. What needle and what container do non-wood-elves use for swatches? Do all races use Mithril thread?

    Next book next post

Have you tried to make a new cultural sewing kit? I think i remember Absor posting that you might need to to "fix it"

I've tried the equivalent of all of those combines in my brand new Northman Sewing Kit, all with the same results; nada. Also using a new Northman Needle, so that's not the issue either.

yes, using the small brick of mithril for the sewing kit as opposed to the mithril bits that were used on the old one also gets a DNC message. However you can still make them with the metal bits, which is the combine i used to make the cultural sewing kit I tried those combines in

I haven't been able to make any Halfling cultural leather, but I assumed that was because the RV vendor has spools of Iron Thread instead of Mercuriam(sp?). Maybe the entire recipe is borked?? I was using MQ Wolf Pelts as described for Halflings. I even tried a Silk Swatch, even though we don't get Silk. No luck...

medium quality rockhopper hide + Vah Shir Needle + small spool of acrylia thread = journeyman's vah anima swatch

                Works on our end.

Heh, this may be a silly suggestion but there is something that has been bugging me. I have also made the Northman kit and needle, but..

The kit used a needle and thimble mold, we made the specific needle to use in the kit...

Do we need to make a thimble??

Don't think so, Woadan. The other races' cultural combines that have been successful only required the needle, thread and swatch/pelt.

I finally got the combines to work thanks to having the CORRECT needle. As posted elsewhere for woodelves it was essence of sunlight + emroydering needle in cultural forge = fier'dal needle which is the one we should be using.
