  • A Moral Dilemna: Wood Elves and Bear Pelts

I have reached level 82 in tailoring. Now,the recipes all seem to have switched from Cat Pelts to Bear Pelts. (Or Wolf Pelts). The Wood Elf is enjoined from killing these woodland animals! How should I proceed?

Well, you could roleplay the whole thing with asking the animal to give up it's life. You could even extend that if you want and make sure you use everything from the bear or wolf - all types of pelts and meat. Obviously the druids and rangers aren't against killing all animals or they wouldn't be foraging rabbit meat. Heck, one of the biggest arguments I've heard is that Druids in all genre's of class-based roleplaying seem to be restricted to natural armors, things made of leather, or wood or bone, that kind of thing. If you aren't allowed to kill animals, where do you get leather?

By Gum! That's exactly my Dilemna! And, aside from the role playing, do any factions take a hit?

Well you could go the route of crystaline silk, then switch to Wu's armor once that trivials therefore skipping pelts all together.

There's a persistant rumor (since I started playing in Oct 99) that there is a hidden animal faction. This is false as far as anyone can tell, and I should hope we could tell by now. The only bears to worry about are the ones actually IN Surefall Glade.

Sorry to take this thread off-topic, but...

Holy Carp, Rassy! How the heck did you get up there??? I've been known to try climbing the odd pillar/statue/wall now and then, but even I haven't tried to climb the OT's Outpost wall! Of course I'm Iksar, so if I messed it up, I probably wouldn't make it out ot the outpost alive. . .

                  That's impressive!

EDIT: Hey, wait a minute. . . That's not the OT! Just where are you?

Backpacks are NOT something you want to skill up on - I went straight from silk to quivers without any real problems - save those HQ bear pelts for selling as finished backpacks in /auction.

I'm a wood elf druid, no one ever "enjoined" me from killing bears or wolves. The only people who might are other players, whom I ignore.

Look at all the druids, do you think that is vinyl they are wearing? I prefer not to be a hypocrite It would be compareable to a bunch of people walking around in our world in full mink coats, then saying "Do not kill minks, it is wrong!"

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. As near as I can research it (I am amazed that anyone makes sense out of all the recipes and ways to go!) Only the backpacks actually require a bear hide. Is this not correct?
So, I will cotinue the cat and spider chase as sirOdie suggests and continue trying to level with the quivers.
Maybe, some day, I will hunt the non Surefall and Kelethin Bears but right now I just can't. Thanks, HeartSong, for the faction info.
As for Crystaline Armour, I'm registered only for Kunark and Velious expansions and I haven't a clue how to get to either! But, when the mood takes me, I'll make inquiries about the Caves and give it a shot.

Not sure if it's still there, but there actually was a faction hit for some animals. The faction hit only occurred in Kithicor forest near the corner where the Shralok orcs spawn. There was Giant Spider, Bear and a couple of other factions. I would actually get a faction hit message. The animal spawns near the corner were infrequent, but not rare. I suspect it was an anomaly and not intended to be part of the game. I never noticed it actually affecting my faction. I'm a Tunarean Wood Elf Druid.

If there was a faction hit my rogue who has killed 1000's of wolves and bears way back when the pelts didn't stack would be KOS near anything with that faction.
