  • Othmir questions

I've recently gotten my Tailoring up to 213, and am quickly tiring of endless vendor farming for tears of prexus for the cultural robes... so I'm thinking it's time to start slaughtering Othmirs.

I was wondering if anyone could help shed some light on them for a 1st time Othmir hunter? I'm a wizard, so I'll more than likely quad kite them.

I've heard that they run at sow speed, is this true?

How hard are they to get single when pulled (keep in mind... no lull)?

    Do the named mobs summon?

Are there particular ones to avoid (ie... the vendors and the lodi shield quest one) mainly to be considerate of others?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks all!

If you are 58 or higher you can solo pull all but the 5 within agro range of the chief he will add. The shaman othmirs sow the others in camp is why they run at sow speed so snare is a must. Most folks just kill the warriors when kiting since the shaman stop to cast so much you can't really quad them. If you are only killing for furs and not exp don't forget to scoop up the pups and shell collectors also because they can drop pelts and they die much quicker then their older brothers. If you are going to kill them do not bother killing the named in the camp furtherest from the SS zonein because they are vendors and will poof on death leaving you no body to loot so no real reason to kill them. One of the 2 named in the camp closest to SS is for a quest but does have a 30-40 minute respawn timer if you do kill them but I usually left the named alone since they too are casters and really can't be quadded.

If no one else is hunting othmir you can clean all 3 camps of warriors and prob will just get back to the first camp when it is respawning.

      You heartless brute.

How can you sit there posting your intentions to murder and skin such fine animals as the Othmir? What kind of a person are you that can happily look into their deep soulfull eyes and nuke them to oblivion just for the sake of a few furs. How can anyone watch their sleek but somewhat bulbous form waddling around the foreshore envisage harm to such a noble creature. Who can not gaze upon Cheif Kalan and Qarrgy Scallopgobblers outrageously funny impersonation of Jamiraqui 's lead singer Jay Kay and not fall about laughing.

I shall fight you. I shall lead a phalanx of Wyvern down for the heights of cobalt scar and claw you. I shall lead a shoal of Sirens from the depths and drown you. I shall lead a pack of Bulthar from the shores and they shall wobble their noses at you. And if all else fails I shall stand beside my othmir brethren and we shall fight you on the beaches. *rofl*

TheWife has recently decided that she really wants to work on tailoring. So we looked at her skill and the various skill up paths...

Ribbons... not too bad to 167 ... then it gets expensive.

Discord stuff ... seems like it wouldn't be TOO hard to get drops... oops, expensive too...

Othmir ... not awful for drop rate... very cheap ... but we have to club baby seals by the seashore...

Hmm... guess I'll need a good raincoat and hip-waders...

I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

I hate to do it, but I have been killing them But OMG, you don't need velium to use them!! Not only are they adorable to look at, they make this really cute squeak and put one hand over their heart when they die...

Gotta say it again... you don't need velium (or yew leaves/drake eggs/cod) to use them!!

At 65 you can single pull them except those around the chief and they do run fast as others have said. You can't snare or root the chief and he's very, very resistant to fire and cold nukes. He's actually a bit of a handful. I hunt them with my 65 warrior "pet" (his term not mine) mostly for the company

Been a LONG time since I hunted Othmir, but IIRC, the Chief also will gate on you when he gets low HP. And he'll do it OVER and OVER and OVER. Very annoying, cause every time he does it, you get another couple of adds coming back with him...

Don't know if you visit EQ Traders very often, but there already a plethora of knowledge in the forums. You do, however, need to work for a bit by searching.

I know for a fact there have been several great threads asking exactly the same question: how do I get started farming otters/othmirs (I know because I, the great Cupcake, have written volumes into those threads about that very subject ).

Anywho, I would suggest you try searching a bit - I think you'll find quite a bit on the subject. Then if you have further questions or need more detailed information that isn't available, by all means, post those. =)

Othmirs are EVIL and should be killed just on principle, even if youre not doing tailoring. And i can prove it:

After finishing the only somewhat expensive and only semi-rare loy combines to 232 I have swithced to whacking Othmirs and can add a few points here.

Being a 65 mage I don't worry about sow or gating from the chief or shamans, simply pull up an earth pet and let him root the runners. If one of em gates I am close enough to reacquire the mob after his first heal and finish him off. At 65 you will not get one single add on a pull, with the exception of the chief who will add if you pull one close to him. The answer to this is to simply pull him first solo and dispatch him. Then you can single pull the rest of the camps. No need to kill the vendors in camp one as they will not agro and poof on death. If you cycle your way through the three camps you will find that the cheif will repop after the second time through, rinse and repeat with him. About 1/3 of the mobs are light blue at 65 so I get some AA experience, the chief is dark blue and being named gives a bit more.

There are a couple of nice benefits from this camp. First, tons of gems drop for the armour quests. You can try to sell them in the bazaar but I dump them on the pok vendors for 47 plat each. Second, Crusteacan armor drops randomly from every mob. I originally sold these to the PoK vendors but then decided to check the bazaar. Was quite surprised to see these sell for 300 plat and upwards (although now I have kind of flooded the market and its dropping a bit). Third, you can fish for Cod while you are medding or while the pet is fighting. Cod fish makes Cod oil used in the Wyvern tailoring. After you whack camp one you can use the brew barrell there to make the oil, bring plenty of extra bait and water. All mobs also drop plat and occaisionally a spear which sells for 9 plat, but I ususally fill my bags with gems and armor leaving the spear. Of course, if you two box you could keep a toon with good othmir faction and have them loot and sell to the vendors in camp one

However, don't be tempted to stock that COD oil up and go hunt wyverns to skill up as I did. While the drop rate isn't bad on the wyvern hides, you have to then go and farm velium (I like Velks for this) which takes quite some time. Then you have to make all of the studs (why is boning so much easier). The problem is the trivial point on the wyvern mask is 335 so you fail at least 50% of the time. The othmir cap trivias at 265 so with a geerlok you succeed much more often, and hence have a better chance to skill up. I did 80 combines of wyverns and got NO points. I wish I had just stuck to the othmirs and sold the oil in the bazaar.

In summary, you can't beat the othmirs for upper level tailoring given nothing more than a pattern, clear mana, silver threads and two othmir furs per combine are needed and given that you can make darned good plat and a little experience while farming the little critters. And that little squeek when they die is icing on the cake.
