  • Tigeraptor Alternative

I have tried all the alternatives for skilling up in tailoring and have pushed two characters past the 240 mark for the aid grimel quest.

My main is a high level ranger who has found that working with Tigeraptor hides to be the cheapest and fastest way to skill up in tailoring at the higher levels. I am surprised that there is no mention of this alternative when skill up paths are discussed.

Farming Tigeraptor hides in WL requires tracking to be efficient but the drop rates appear to be better in my oppinion than wyverns and such. Farming velium next door in Skyshrine is very efficient with a forge there to break down bricks into stackable components. I found little to no competion in either location. Drake eggs seem to be easy to obtain in the bazaar or foraged if necessary.

The combines using these hides are far simpler than solstice robes and far cheaper at the higher levels. I would say that farming silk and preping for solstice robe combines is about equal to farming hides and velium and prepping for tigeraptor hide combines.

For those of you that think you must be capable of quading/aeing mobs to be effective well think again. I can keep CS clear of wyverns when no one else is hunting there and I can drop craig spiders with my bow before I get to them running at sow speed. I enjoy spreading out the spawn to annoy those quad kiters sitting around waiting for the mobs to spawn in groups of four or more.

Looking at the recipes that use Tigeraptor Hides... I see the following facts:

    1. They are all Ranger Only Items... no other class will want or can use them.
    2. They all require Drake Egg Oil... which need Drake Eggs... which is either Foraged or Found on Drakes from Skyshrine (if you found other places to get Drake Eggs please let us know and will add the source to the database).
    3. They all require Velium Studs... which needs Coldain Velium Temper to make. Which is either bought in Thurgadin, or made with components for Cobalt Scar.

Given the relative remoteness of Wakening Lands/Skyshrine/Cobalt Scar, especially for a non-porting class (ie there is no PoK book in Cobalt Scar) it is understandable about the lack of competition.

There are answers to all my issues... no single one will be enough to stop people from trying this... just for me, the combination of all these things makes me want to avoid it.

I was looking at tigerraptor for tailoring as well since the pelts and eggs are easy to get. I found that they require a ton of velium (12 small peices each combine) and and that the trivial is 335 which cuts down sucesses.

I decided to do the Othmir caps, more pelts (2 each combine) but fewer overall forage/farmed items. I have a high level enchater friend to get the vials from cheaply so I dont have to buy them in the baz. Trivial is 262 which provides more sucesses (and hence faster skill ups).

I may be missing something obvious, but...

        Assuming no failures:
For each 2 small pieces, you get a bit.
For each 3 bits (6 small pieces), you get 2 studs.
For each stud, you can make a combine (mask).

So, you only need 3 small pieces per combine, but you'd have an even number of combines.

        Tigeraptor Mask:
drake egg oil, mask pattern, tigeraptor hide, velium studs

For each stud, you can make a combine (mask).
My bad, I should have specified I was looking at the cloak because it was a sellable item. The Cloak has 10 dex (rangers love dex) and used to be worth 4k sveral years ago. I actually bought one 1200 a year ago (after listening to someone compain that they had bought one for 4k etc...). Price today wont approach even 1200 of course but....

The boots are also decent for midlevel gear.

The mask would more likely be sold to a vendor for a loss or turned in for tribute.

The trivial is still an issue as you get more skill ups on sucesses than failures.

As far as farming, the tigeraptor stuff requires 3 farmed items (unless you farm in the baz, but thats more expensive). The othmir only requires 1 farmed item, but you need access to an encanter to make the mana vials. Overall the othmir caps give a better balance of time vs money for skilling up.

In response to a couple of comments in prior posts:

Drake eggs can be foraged in ToV and WW as well as Skyshrine per the data base. Six months ago when I did my last skilling up in tailoring they were still readily available in the bazaar.

I would agree that the Othmir fur hat is indeed a simple and cheap combine to make with a favorable trivial compared to other combines. I just found the fur drop rate to be dismal coupled with needing two per combine to drive me away from going that direction. Plus they seemed to be camped a lot.

All I was trying to point out in my original post was that Tigeraptors tailoring was in my opinion a good alternative, better suited to certain classes, that was being over looked in all the discussions on this board.

Tailoring is the toughest of all skills to master. There is no fixed best skill up route to take like brewing. One needs to flexible and pick up components where ever they can and not focus in on just one solution.

Using my ranger for component farming, I leveled up a friends barbarian warrior in 30 days to 240+ in tailoring, smithing, jewel craft, brewing and baking, and 220+ in smithing and pottery. Prior to that I leveled up my ranger to similar levels over a longer period of time as I was not yet elemental flagged to allow completion of the Aid Grimel Quest. Just shortly after PoP came out I achieved 240+ status on a set of multiple characters for all seven trades plus tinkering. So I have been there and done that several times.

Btw I have also felt that once you reach 240+ you no longer need to worry about skill ups like some folks that knock themselves out to be a member of the 1750 club. At 240+ skill ups will come as you make items useful for friends and guildies or for profit.

As I said in my other post, I cannot Forage, so doing the Tigeraptor's was not a good choice to attempt. Yes I had a friend who did some foraging for me in WL, but the drops back then were dismal and I didn't want to ruin my Skyshrine faction hunting for Drake Eggs since I had to use the zone to get from WL to CS. Not many porters would go to CS and I preferred to run than to PAY for a ride to the place I wanted to go. When you Roleplay you go to wierd lengths to stay in character sometimes *grin*

As you said the Velium can be tedious, even doing the Wyverns and can get expensive if you fail on the combines for the studs. I guess it comes down to desire and what you have available.

For me, I didn't want to stop at 240 even though I had my GM Needle at the time. I wanted to reach 250 and have that ability to say I maxxed Tailoring

Another thing, unless you are looking for successes, there's no reason to worry about a successful combine over a failed combine for a skillup. Neither a failed or successful combine matters when it comes to getting a skillup. It's all in the RNGl

Except that you are twice as likely to pass the first check of a skillup with a success compared to a failure.

When was this ever discovered? I've never seen anyone quote that in the past. I never kept stats on whether I had a better skillup rate on successes than failures although I never bothered with it either.

Check out the sticky in the general forum about "Skillup Formula". Was released a couple of months ago or so.

Here's the formula info for reference:
                    Each tradeskill has a difficulty Y: 2, 3, or 4.
                    Tailoring is 3
                    Smithing is probably 4
Pottery used to be 2, now it's probably 4
                    Jewelcraft is probably 2
                    Fletching
                    Baking
                    Brewing is probably 2
                    Tinkering
                    Alchemy
                    Poisonmaking

For tradeskills with an alternate stat set S = max(int, wis, alt)
For tradeskills with no alternate stat set S = max(int,wis)-15

If the combine failed set F=2
If the combine succeeded set F=1

                    Set N=(S*10)/(Y*F)

If ran(1000) < N then proceed to the second check

Second check: If ran(200) >= min(190, skill) then skillup!

I did raptors as well on my way to 250. They're advantage amongst the Velious tailoring recipes is that they are A) in Wakening Lands, which is usually empty, so no competition for the mobs (as opposed to CS, which usually has wyvern and otter farmers) and B) does not require yew leaves (unlike panther and haze panther combines, which is a very rare forage and ground spawn). Foraging drake eggs is super easy and then your standard velium farming points.

They aren't really that remote anymore. It's an easy jog through Plane of Mischief from Great Divide to get there.
