  • Ribbons & Robes

I have seen a number of posts stating that a good way to skill up in tailoring is by doing cultural robes. Ok - I'm a dark elf so maybe I should too. The recipe calls for an appropriate ribbon (np - I can get the component needed for the dye in large enough quantities) and a research component.

Where did all of you get the volume of research components required for skill ups at? I am a 65th necro with 260 AAs so farming is pretty easy. I have looked in the bazaar but never seen the components I need for sale. Tailoring skill is 165 BTW. Need to go to 240.

I'm not sure how feasible it is to take the cultural robes path based on the number of components required to skill up.

I'm wondering this as well, the components I need are rarely in the bazaar and if there, 100p+ each. I'm a human druid so the ribbons are not an issue. With the drops of these components being so random (no camps to camp) and on top of that needing a caster to make the swatch-thingies, which can also fail, I have given up on this as a viable skillup path. And thinking about starting solstice robes now (at 185) so I fail alot, lol.

Simply put, you need to vendor mine for them. I think over a period of about 2 weeks, I ended up with enough research components for 150 combines, just from vendor mining PoK alone.

Vendor mining, absolutely... although I find a few at a reasonable price in the bazaar.

You might find the spell research forum has some tips on where certain components drop.

Currently I have about 7 stacks of iksar ribbon words - my problem is finding a researcher willing to do the tedious swatch combines.
        Tailoring - 250 (Zillia 225)
        Brewing - 250 (Zillia 250)
        Baking - 250 (Zillia 250)
        Blacksmithing - 218 (Zillia 225)
        Fishing - 200
        Fletching - 200 (Zillia 235)
        Pottery - 198 (Zillia 227)

          Vendor mine.

PoK, Magus, especially after patch, etc.

Check Baz. Look for ALL the robe components you can use (i.e the 212 222 232 242 252 and 262 robe). Usually you can get a few stacks of combines every week or so. It only slows down after you pass the 232 robe (higher components usually a bit rarer).

It is a bit slow, but it only takes about 5-10 min to do and if you regularly do it your skill will go up nicely (237 tailoring here and all done on robes post 187).

          Good luck,

          Papy

I'm not sure why I didn't think about checking vendors...

It's not something I have ever really done I guess. I want to thank you for the idea though. I'll start going around to vendors on a routine basis.

For humans, it's pretty easy. Runes of Concussion, unless a vast difference in price on other servers, are between 1 and 20 p per, and very common. I not only vendor mined hundreds of them, but found them in teh bazaar (Prexus) by the hundreds for 1-5 p per.

On Prexus, I know several Dark Elves who are huring for combine materials. One told me that Hate's Fury or Nadox was the place for the components Dark Elves need in decent numbers. I have no idea if that's true though.

My necro on Fenning Ro has 205 research plus the geerlock and I'd do the combines for you Tweedle. I try to keep my tradeskilling times to early weekday mornings so if you are on between 6 and 7 am EST, send Nydiel a tell.

                  Nesta,

One of the reasons the Human research components are 100+ on MT is because I bought all of the ones that were cheaper. I would buy any that I found for 100 or less. I blew off the 212 trivial component and just bought the higher level ones. I did not start doing the robe combines until I had reached 212. Prior to that I did Solstice Robes and the ethereal freebies.

As others have said, vendor mining is the key, as well as buying in Bazaar when the prices are right. The other thing to do is start collecting them well in advance of when you will need them.

The Cultural robes are a great skillup path. Last night, I started the evening at 212 skill. It took me about 250 or so combines of the Robe of Scent to get from 212 to 222. After that I had enough components for 160 or so combines of the Robe of Concussion. Surprise! I gained 10 skillups to the trivial of 232 in only 106 combines. That made up for the several runs of 150 or more Solstice Robe combines without a skillup. This was done with 305 WIS and a geerlok equipped. So, I think the robes are a great path. Unfortunately, I don't have nearly the quantities of the higher trivial components.

Right now, the balance of the Concussion swatches are on my trader in Bazaar. If there are any left when I get home this evening, I will pull them off and give them to you. Send me a tell in game.

                  Baldary

Update: Nesta, I am sorry but all of the items sold before I got home.

                    Vendors...

As everyone else stated, vendor mining is the way to go. The actual drops are too infrequent to ever amount to much, although I do occasionally get a usable research component from the spiders in FV and the greater shadows in TM.

I started collecting research items very soon after LDoN went live, before everyone was also looking for them. This was also before merchants would not store items past their visible inventory. Without the competition I was able to get tons of research items, sometime a stack at a time.

Back in January I finally got my Tailoring to about 202, so I decided it was time to dip into my cache and plow my way to 232. The result: 202 - 232 tailoring in about 24 hours, with several stacks of components left.

If you're on Thuloxe Paels, and you catch me, I'll be more than willing to do the research combines (180 w/o geerlok). My main's Bricanni Midst, a level 51 enchanter, as of July 09, 2004. Just bonk me, I'll get my book out.

Oh, thanks very much for the offer Baldary I checked PoK last night and found 1 rune of concussion, lol, but I will keep trying. I do check the bazaar frequently as well and just today there were about 10 total on 2 traders for about 40-45p each, went to both traders, no runes at all. Updated traders in window, only the one at 150p left, lol. I do belive I am not alone in looking for these items

Thanks all for advice/offers/etc. I will keep trying! Tailoring will not elude me!

I always vendor mine the 2 days after a patch, and check the bazaar when I log in and when I log off. Concussion runes are massively common, and since I'm not a forager I had a much worse time getting the dye components myself.

However, if you have the plat, just realize that compared to anything else, its really cheap to buy the stuff post-concussion in the bazaar. I pay up to 200pp for flakes of lodestone and words of obliteration, and sometimes up to 300pp for words of capacity. Remember, even at those prices its still way cheaper than most other methods, the items are great tribute fodder, and you can sell the robes.

I sell the robes dirt cheap (capacity robes for 1000pp, and considering they give 6k+ tribute, they sell for that if nothing else, for example) relative to other sellers, but its still more than it costs to make, getting the money spent back.

Also, don't forget to check the bazaar for ribbons. Ribbons have crappy vendor buy back, so you can often get platinum ribbons for as low as 20pp each. That saves you money on dye components (or a ton of time if you can forage), and a ton of money on undyed ribbons.

Good thing about human tailoring, is once you get to 232 on concussion, with a 5% mod you are at 243, very close to GM, so you can make just about anything with a good success rate. Lets you take the time to gather stuff and do one skill up run every month or so as you get 100 or more components.

I see people mentioning this but I don't understand. Wouldn't a vendors inventory be reset after patch? I mean wouldn't he lose all his PC sold items?
