  • geerlocks and skilling up

Looking for a little confirmation really.
I'm currently 217 tailoring and have amassed a large number of items to finally make my assult on 250. Should I use skill mod item, like a geerlock, when doing these combines?

I've heard that there is more chance of a skillup on success than failure, which would make me think that a geerlock should be used. Are my chances of skillup based on my underlying skill level (217) or the modified level (227 or 228 or whatever)? It is possible to skill up to 250 using a geerlock after base skill of 238 or 239 when the effective skill level reaches and passes 250?

Apologies for being such a tradeskill n00b! All answers and advice greatly appreciated!

There are speculations both ways. The plain and simple truth is that nobody knows. Do what you are comfortable with.

If equipping your geerlok means losing a significant amount of wisdom or intelligence (whichever is your primary stat), I would recommend against it. If your wis/int is already capped and losing your primary item won't really affect it, then use the geerlok if you like. As Lord Grimrose said, no one knows for sure. If any of your combines include solstice robes, you may with to leave off the geerlok in order to try and stretch out the gem chains longer.

Yes, you can continue to skill up after base 240 with the geerlok equipped.

Thanks for the replies! Good point about the int loss when equppiing the geerlock. I hadn't considered that.
Yeah, a proportion of my combines will be solstice robes, so I definately won't use it for those, and I might experiment a bit on the wyvern masks.
        Cheers!

Since you say you're gonna be doing solstice robes, I'd recommend against using the geerlok. They're cheaper on fails than they are on successes (strangely enough) due to the chain.

Use the geerlok when you want successes to help offset the costs, assuming you can sell the results. If you cannot sell the results (either to PC's or vendor them for decent plat for the cost to make) then it might be better to simply forego the geerlok in favor of better int/wis.

But keep in the mind the RNG knows what your intentions are ("I want to fail on these robes because they're cheaper so I won't equip the geerlok" or "I need to make these robes for friends/sales") and WILL make the opposite of what you want happen.
