  • Just a couple questions about Solstice robes

I recently got my Tailoring up to 182 and currently thinking about switching to Solstice robes to finish skilling up to 200 as both the ribbons and Acrylia pieces seem to be a bit expensive for skilling (i'm not able to easily farm anything except spider silk....again).

I know on failures the gem chain is returned to you, so, my main question would be, how many chains do I need to invest in to be able to get to 200 skill? I was thinking of purchasing around 6-8 chains to help alleviate the problem of continuously bugging JCers.

Btw, if there are any Gnomish Tailors on Quellious, look me up. I have 27 Platinum White Ribbons and 30 Steam Dyes left over that I would hate see go to waste.

6-8 chains won't last ya very long. You'll be hoping for failures just so you don't use up your chains.

but it is a viable path. sell those robes you do succeed on and buy more chains.

i'm at 157 and doing sol robes, i went thru about 20 chains already getting about 6 skillups, and god knows how many fails, i had 2 mules with all packs full of embued emeralds. took me about a month to turn them all into dust and onto the silks, so now they have nothing but the sacred silks. i think i've been thru maybe 3 whole backpacks by now. (i had another mule with 4 deluxe sewing kits full of chains, 40 chains) i don't even wanna think about how much i spent on all this stuff. (i bought marr promise and always carry some with me and mortar/pestile, made a bunch of cel essences while on raids from looted word/runes/pages) and yes, i did have guild help getting all this accomplish. i made the chains guild leader added the gems to the chains (about a 55% success rates, he's a 65 ench with the JC aa and 250 skill with trophy), had guildies imbueing emerald by the pack full, god i bet they hated me for that, it was when you had to do them 1 at a time, pre mass imbue.

since the failure rate on robes is pretty high, even for a gm, it can still be a bit on the costly side, 3 emeralds an attempt. thats what, about 13*3=39p, not to mention all those cursed celestial essences.

you're making a trade of going with the sol robes, cheaper, but more subcombine clicks (which equals more chance of failure hence increasing the cost).

ribbons, more cost , but less chance of costly subcombine failures.

so click away, and if ya keep good records, when all is done, you'll know if you made the right choice.

When working on recipes I'm going to use a lot, I make a little spreadsheet that figures out my costs. I did it for my cultural smithing so I could see what I could charge and still come out ok. I did one for Solstice Robes as well click me

(If you have IE, it should bring up the spreadsheet in the window, otherwise you'll need to download it).

In essence the raw materials are listed on the left, and subcombines are computed based on success rate (with 95% hard coded for trivial combines, like sacred swatches). If you fiddle with the price of materials, it updates the costs on the right for you.

If you have a Jeweler with AA, you can bump the GSC success from .50 to .95. If you farm all your silk, drop swatch price from 10 to 0. If you make all your celestial essence, drop the price from 4 to 2 (think thats cost). Change your robe success rate (set at 0.05 currently, as you're under 200 skill) as you get better. With each change, the spreadsheet calcs a new "avg cost per combine", and from that you can determine if its enough savings to justify the clicking.

That's crazy. Man, this game is supposed to be fun, although it often does seem like work more than anything; eq=my second job.

I'm a computer / math geek. Figuring stuff out like that is relaxing and enjoyable for me.

The cultural armor one I have is also great for when random_guildie_02 says "Hey, if I bring you 3 blue diamonds, how much to try a BP?". Just plug in 0 for bd cost, set succes at 100 (since its only 1 attempt), and viola.
