  • an alternative skill up, 60 to 100ish

Well, here is my 2 coppers on cheap and each smithing...

Thanks to those who have presented previous routes of cheap smithing!!! I mean it, thank YOU!

My mains are a 54 enchanter and 53 druid, on separate accounts. My enchanter is a human but is KOS in Freeport...I have a human monk born in Freeport who has written this guide.

I am a spreadsheet geek...I love EQTraders, but I like doing things for myself...that is why I am doing this, as another alternative.

I used EVERY rusty weapon to make into tarnished & into ore. Every ore was made into something useful, usually into small bricks which would make sheet metal. <comment> I eventually made every combine of Forged weapons, not trivial on any of them, and got my skill up to about 66.

Again, this was done for my self indulgence, to make my spreadsheet complete. After I made every forged weapon, I used up my metal bits to make some cheap spoons and knives. No biggy.

Here is where the 53 druid comes in...
He is my money maker, he farms HG in RM for plat, junk, and FS weapons... When he gets overweight, he ports to PoK, trades up plat, and shares bank the FS weapons and junk...
Now, the junk is sold by my monk, and the FS weapons are converted into HQ ores. When all ores are made, they are converted into Large bricks of HQ ore. If I have a spare small brick, I check to see how many small pieces of HQ ore I have and make enough to change into Large Bricks. I then trade all Large bricks of HQ ore to the enchanter to make Enchanted, and trade them back. Each Enchanted Large Brick makes 3 enchanted small bricks; so take 2 small bricks and make into enchanted sheet metal. So Far, VERY CHEAP.

To make Silvered Weapons, just get the enchanter to buy a stack of silver bars for about 10.5 pp and have him enchant them...before/after mass enchant doesnt matter, still the same cost.
So, you basically buy a silver bar for 5.25 gold (have it enchanted), buy water, buy molds...

    Now, here is my tip...
Since I have made every piece of Silvered weapon from my monk, I can tell you what will get you the best return. Remember, you are only paying for the silver bars, and molds and water. All the HQ ore is free because you got it from FS weapons.

If anyone from Sony is reading this, PLEASE hide your eyes NOW!:
Silvered Pick resells for 83 pp, and only costs 1 silver to buy the mold, so you can spend about 2 pp for ingredients and get a return of about 80 pp.

A very nice return that is listed at trivial less than 102. Now who wants to do the math? If it trivials at 102 and you can make about 80 pp per success from 70 to 100, that would be approximately 2400 assuming you got a skill up every success. For what it's worth, I plan on skilling up with Silvered Picks with my druid farming FS weapons in Rathe Mountains.

BTW, with this plan, I will try to include trivial levels for Silvered Weapons as I attain them...

Since the return is that great, but the access to enchanter silver and enchanted ore is limited somewhat, I'd definitely recommend this for making money but not necessarily as a skillup path.

People generally pick skillup paths for ease and while this is VERY nice for making money, it's not easy for skilling up. (Plus frankly with that kind of return I'd want successes almost more than the skillups).

This must be one of the recipes they missed in their previous checks for recipes that sell back for lots more than the cost to make them. The introduction of enchanted metal should not drive the sellback cost of the item this high. Expect this to be changed as soon as SOE is aware of it. Verant and now SOE have been persistent in eliminating profitable recipes like this.

If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is…

My incredibly cheap way to 116 was to go farm condensed shadow and turn it into arrowheads. I saved them for my fletching, but they sell pretty well in the baz from what I've seen.

And yes, that may sell back for more than the cost, but you still have to farm it (the fs for the silvered weapons). I think they only change the stuff where you buy everything then sell the finished product back.

Well, I am sorry, but I did not want to imply that this path was right for everyone. As I said in the title, this is an alternative. My implication was one alternative of many. This alternative does work for me, since I do have access to an enchanter. And yes, it is mostly for money, I know I could make dairy spoons and armor cheaper by myself.

But I am also doing this to help narrow down the trivials on silvered weapons. I added all the other information because I was excited about the return on the other weapons, most of which also returned about 40 pp each. Still a nice return.

<edit> Also, I think I got 5 skillups from 66 to 71 on 21 attempts. So I am happy with the money and the skillups.

          Trivial updates to follow...

So if you used this as a way to make some plat (a bit of a repay for the thousands I have spent) would you consider it an exploit or better question is would SOE consider it one?

I thought the cultural needles that trivial at 132 would be considered an exploit, but it's still around. Zeralynn's guide explains how smiths actually make a net profit getting to 132 using these. They've been the same since LoY came out. Maybe since the needles need foraged components, and the silvered weapons need enchanting, they are not considered an exploit. Or maybe they are both still under the radar screen. In which case I will stop talking now.

I would liken this more to the Iksar Smithing debacle from back in the day. Some of the Cabilis Scale Mail recipes sold back for a 10pp profit or so. The debates raged as to whether this was an exploit or not. Many people took advantage of this. Some to get an Iksar smith skilled up, and others to raise tens of thousands of plat (back in 2001).

Eventually the prices were changed, but I was unaware of anyone being banned or warned for it. I would consider it an exploit in the same way that a 'little white lie' is still a lie. You know you shouldn't do it, but the likelihood of consequences is extremely low.

                  toolboxes

remember when toolboxes just took metal bits and water? then sold back for like 6-7gp skilled up smithing on a now deleted character long ago and made a lot of money doing it too. paid for itself plus extra.

Where do people keep coming up with this idea?!
HQ or made from FS weapons has cost equal to the sell value of the weapon it's made from. In some cases this is a net savings over buying it straight from the vendor, in others it's not. In no case is it free.

Well they consider it free because it is a dropped item... You not only get the Plat from the MOB but the FS weapon. So it Kinda is free... Just My 2pp.
