Best way to go up in skill?

I haven't played Everquest in a long long tim. I think when I quit SoV was just coming out. I have worked on smithing and tailoring a bit but I'm curious what steps I should take to try and become a master in each? I'm not sure where my smithing is but I know I just became trivial in Silk armor in Tailoring (Trivial is 36 I believe) Any help would be appreciated.

Getting smithing up to 122 is real easy on cheap vendor-bought stuff. Then, you can get to 162 on vendor-bought too, though HQ ore is not always available, and it gets expensive towards end. Then, you can get to 188 on all storebought, except for leather padding. Past 188 is where it gets real steep.
