  • Is my goal reachable?

Currently working on Smithing (like duh!) and I am at 212 skill and possess a Geerlock Hammer.

I have chosen to take the Shadowscream route to obtain 240 (252 with Hammer). But i've read a few posts and talked to a few people about it taking months to farm and get there.

What i'm proposing is to do it in one fell swoop. That's right, 1 session, 30 points.

Following an ssumed average of 1 skill-up per 20 combines this figures into needing: 30 stacks of wailing substance, 30 stacks of shrieking substance and 60 stacks of swirling shadows. I don't have much in the way of true tradeskill gear so I plan on getting and Extended/Enhanced KEI right before attempting.

While this attempt won't take palce for a little bit (currently only have 15 stacks of shadows and about 10 of each substance) I would like to get people's opinons if this is possible?

Not to mention...a screenshot of all the bags open would be pretty cool, hehe.

Well, if you really want to get this accomplished the way you want, I would aim more for a 1:25 skill up ratio, which puts you at 38 and 76 stacks.

Can this be done? Sure. I'm sure most people can speak of really long sessions at the forge.

But the way that humming orbs (don't) stack, and how much room this sort of thing will take up with the large number of ingrediants, I'm not sure that I, in your shoes, would really want to. Better for the sanity to do a stack of combines here and there.

Not too worried about sanity....I lost that a long time ago.

I'm just looking to get Smithing done and over with...been working on it for 4 years, it's about time to close it out and retire.

According to murphy's law I see 3 ways this could go:
        1) You get your 30 points with TONS of stuff left over, making all that farming useless
        2) You do this on a bad RNG day and are nowhere close to your goal
        3) You finish up a point before your goal

I hope you get stuck with the 1st option

Good luck and tell us how it turns out
        250 Jewelry Making (JCM2)
        250 Baking
        250 Brewing

        220 Tailoing (+15%)
        240 Fletching (+5%)

i could think of some worse options than those, but heres another few:

they break he hollowshade war again while he's pharming and he gets swarmed by level 60 guardians.

sam decides to pharm shadows that day.

he accidently destroys his hammer and/or anvil on combine 28 and has to hunt bloodlings for 2 days for a new one. (yes i know its harder to do now)

I can see you doing this but like the others said the orbs do not stack... Gonna need A LOT of bag space.

If you are lucky and get all your skill ups prior to using all the material I would suggest that you finish making the humming orbs off and sell them in the Bazzar (SOMEONE will buy them I am sure).

Just by posting your plan here you've ensured to gain the wrath of the RNG gods.

Seriously -- who knows? As stated, the best possible scenario is that you will have leftover humming orbs to sell, which will sell like hotcakes if you price them within sanity.

Good luck on the farming -- that's gonna take patience.

Well, I will keep you all informed. As of right now, I have saved up 16 stacks of shadows, 6 stacks of wailing substance and 1 friggin stack of shrieking substance.

Though I do have to tell you all this. The other day I was running back through and notice owlbears sitting at the outpost. "Cool" I thought, someone was running the war and maybe left the owlbears up to farm. a quick /who revealed a level 19 beastlord running around and me....ok, maybe they gated and had to get something. So I wait for 5 minutes or so. Do another couple /who in that time, no one comes into the zone. So I figure it's a free-for-all so i go ahead and single pull the owlbear boss and proceed to almost die in the process (53 cleric).....well, a full mana bar and an almost full life bar later I proceed to loot the FT item. No one else comes into the zone for a while and I smile as I start to regen mana faster. Now only if the smithing gods were just as nice.

Not Necessarily, While the Wailing and Shrieking substances are NO DROP the Humming Orbs that they make are not (or so I am told). If you manage to get a bunch left over I am sure they would make smith very happy

                            Almost 43 combines per skill-up from 188 to 250, with wisdom between 275 and 315 before I hit 250 -- mostly 285 and up.

Don't count on that 20 combines per skill up thing.

DO count on getting vastly more owlbear substances than shrieking substances, throwing your farming time way out of balance. DO count on sometimes the spots you like to farm swirling shadows in being taken.

That's a good time to start restructuring your dream by making whatever combines you have to see where it gets you.

If you have anything like my luck, you may need vastly more owlbear substances than you might think you need, for instance -- more than twice as many. Would be a shame to let some rot because you simply don't have the bag space to hold THAT many accursed substances. And of course, if you need more owlbear, and save more owlbear, you will be needing more space for shrieking and for swirling shadows too.

I'd make whatever I needed to make so that I let a bare minimum of substances ever rot. You could be tearing your hair out about it later.

Your numbers sound fine about average is 20 combines per skill (my last 4 points to 250 where 1 combine only in a row!!). Some will last 40 combines (keep on), some will take 4 combines to skill up!.

Agree about method. I did the same about farming stacks before combining them. I used 18 of each substance and 36 of swirmlings, then, forge.

About space, not that problem. Get 7 bags of 10 slots and distribute stuff like this:
                              - bag 1: full of swirmlings (10 stacks)
                              - bag 2: left side one subtance, right side the other substance.
                              - bag 3: left side stacks of water, right side metal rings.
                              - bag 4,5,6 : free
                              - bag 7 is to hold stuff like file, food, hammer, etc.
                              - slot 8 in inventory, for the anvil that cant be stored in bags (or was the hammer?)

Combine rings and substances up to get 15 orbs (bag 4,5). Then buy 15 molds to fill the rest of bags 5,6. Do 15 final combines.
Repeat to do 17 final combines next time.

After a few, you can increase the number of orbs/molds made/bought cause the metals, water, and substances slots will get free bit by bit, being able to combine 25 or so in row at end.

                              None left...back to farming.

With this method, i dinged 250 smither in 3 weeks, farming ALL the way up after 160 or so.

                              good luck
