Question about Inferno Plate

been hunting in plane of fire a bit recently.. and wouldnt mind the bp.. but uh.. how rare are these metallic substances? have killed quite a few magma guardians as they are what are said to drop the substances (according to the pop drop listing)... but have yet to see any drops.. any information on whether or not these are indeed the right mobs.. or are the substances just really nice and rare?

The current problem with tradeskills is that there's too many people with maxxed skill so this is much less of an issue in making an item. Instead the main limiter is now the rarity of the drops.
Witness Tae Ew stuff, on BB there's quite a few smiths able to make this and the market is flooded with it... tunic is often 10k and shields are hovering around 6k. This tends to kill the market for Nightmare chain where the drops are much rarer but the items themselves are mostly worse than Tae Ew (plus the silly req and rec =/).

All drops from Magma Guardians are super rare (Solidified Magma for pottery and Metallic Substances for smithing).

PoFire

In 6 months of elemental raiding (and PoFire is a very popular raid spot), we've gotten enough metallic substances for 2 PoFire BP attempts. They are insanely rare.

Hmm I was looking at Inferno as a starting point for upgrading my gear and keeping an interest in smithing going after 2 years.

It seems that PoP is a total dead end for Smithing somthing better than available in the old world. As there has been a mooted upgrade to mellee drops in PoP to make mellee's more relevent 60+ unless there is a similiar improvement in Smithing options we are looking at the Rygorr/Fine Plate debacle all over again where smithing something useful for your level was a lost cause unless doing cultural plate at 220+ skill.

Inferno Plate sucks compared to the other types, not only in drop rate but in stats too.
