  • Spreading the joy: Good foam collection night

Decided to take a break from Minotaur Hero's Brew to put a few points into smithing. Did some fine plate combines, had a fairly good success rate so I didn't lose too much money on buying the ore. Decided to take a ride out to OOT to try to score some sea foams so I could give some low-end Freeport cultural pieces a shot.

Normally when I go out to get foams it is terribly slow-going. There are only 3 mobs that I have found that drop Mugs of Sea Foam (all in OOT):

    1. Cyclops
    2. Seafury Cyclops
    3. Goblin Chieftain

I also *assume* the other 'clops in the zone (Quag, Tainted, etc.) have the chance to drop it, but since I have never killed them and because the foam is uncommon at best I can't confirm this theory. Anyhow, as has been mentioned in previous threads I'm not quite strong enough to farm the Cykes with any real efficiency. I mean, I can kill them solo...thats not an issue, but at my current level/skill doing so puts me out of action for quite awhile (medding and resting). Couple that with the not-so-common drop rate of the foams, and I am looking at 1 foam/hour...two if I'm lucky. 3 if the stars are aligned.

So what I usually do is head over to Goblin Island (directly south of the Sisters Island). There is a tent at the top of the island that always has either a Goblin Wizard or a Goblin Chieftain. The chieftain will drop foams on occasion. The spawn timer is fairly quick and reliable. One of those two gobbies will pop there around every 10 minutes or so (I haven't actually timed it, just estimating...seems reasonable). So I run up to the tent, mow down the whichever goblin is standing there (hopefully chieftain), loot foam if it drops, then run down to the shore and fish for 10 minutes (need seaweeds for the cultural temper as well). Also, every 20 or 30 minutes I will /ooc to sea if anyone has any foams they'd be willing to sell.

After collecting a few foams from the Chief someone sends me a tell saying they have a foam. Wheee. Ok. I swim (in full plate of course) across the ocean to the AC camp where the fellow is. He sells me 2 foams (he had just picked up another on my trip over). Groovy. I start fishing again and get another tell for foam. I head over to the Gornit camp and the fellow just gives me the foam! I tried twice to pay him for it but he just told me that he never found a use for them and he got them frequently, so I could just have it. Sweet. Thanked him and headed back to fish.

    {Intermission in Foam Gathering: Low level player gets himself lost and needs to find the spells vendor on AC island. Doesn't know how to navigate by /loc and doesn't have the zone map in the LoY mapping system apparently. I do my good deed for the week and swim the entire cross-length of the ocean (he was down on the far SW island by the fishing vendors) so that I could lead him back to where he needed to be. Bonus #1 to this was that I got to see Alizwesaur for the first time. Thats one big lizard. Lead the fellow back to AC Island (mind-numbingly slow, I'm swimming in circles to allow him to catch up. About half way on the trip back he tells me "Hey! I got better at swimming (17)!"). Bonus #2 - when I finally get him to the AC Island spells vendor, he helps me out by looking to see if she has some foams on her (she won't sell to me). She didn't, but it was worth a look.}

I head back to fish (I've built a decent collection of seaweeds by this point). Am just about to pack up and wait for the boat to leave (I forgot to make a new thurg gate pot after I used the last one, dernit) when I get a third tell from a fellow saying he has foams. Cool. I'll take the next boat. I had over to Seafury island and find the guy. This guy hands me 26 freakin' foams! I was stunned. He must have been mulching Seafuries like nobody's business. I paid him (got a good deal too, real cheap since he too apparently didn't know what they were for) and went on my way. Between the Chieftain and the three tells I got it was probably the most foam-efficient trip to OOT for me to date. I hit the boat and parked myself by the beach in Butcherblock. Fished for a while, but didn't get any Stonefish (might as well see if I can pick some up for racial needles while I'm there, right?). Logged out.

Tonight when I get home I plan on fishing for a bit. If the Stonefish aren't biting I'll book back to Freeport and put together some of the low-end cultural stuff and see if I can get some skill-ups out of it. There is no real point to this story. I was just happy with what I consider to be a windfall of Sea Foams. Was a nice change of pace as well. Seeing Alizewsaur was officially "Neat". Ok, thats all. Just wanted to share. Keep banging away at those forges people. Some days really are better than others. =)

Found 3 drops of pure rain in the bazaar last night. 3k each, but what the hell, I don't need the cash for anything anyway.

Pearls and blood to the cleric for brewing, wack bang, 4 tempers (I grabbed some people and went to CT, made a shield, then handed it to the shaman, her friend got me the 4th pure rain).

Slapped the components in the forge, failed. Ok, last try. Bang, lost my emblem. Uh, I mean, nice shiney pair of hurricane chain boots for my shaman. And a skill up.

Then my wife cussed at me since hurricane tempers are for the aid grimel quest >.<

My cleric proudly wears hurricane plate hat, sleeves, gloves and bp (even though her other bp was marginally better)

I don't care that hurricane tempers are for Aid Grimel quest, I'm making things for my friends with them!

        sea foams

there are some vendors in OoT that people sell the foams to in mass I would vendor dive there and you can probably score countless foams.

Tried that, since I started looking for foams in OOT, the venders seem to be cleaned out.

If anyone on the Rathe has a bunch they want to sell, look me up, I will buy all you have.

You need drops of pure rain, Kiz? I know a certain wizard that has a few. Wonder what he could get for them...

Angling for the old windblade? Not mine to hand out. I'm cleaned out on cash, and someone stole all my salable tailoring supplies :P

I need to rebuild the bank before I do any more smithing anyhow.

Edit: you're after mana vials or imbued emeralds, aren't you?

Stole? Stole? Perhaps I am a little late in payment, but I have put up some of the Humming Orbs. So, I owe you 50 more. What is 50 humming orbs between friends? =D

Actually, I should have a 3rd rain drop coming my way. 3 dropped for my BoT group the other night, and since I am the tradeskiller (or, at least the most vocal), I got 2 of them and a friend has the other. I will try to get that camp again soon to get more of them.

Ahem, as for the Foams, I have collected and made the temper for my human smith to have a few old cultural combines, but killing my way to the forge is tedium I don't want to do while carrying smithing supplies atm. A real paladin does not hide under the guise of invisibility.

Hah, I wondered why you handed those orbs over so quickly. No payment is necessary, it was a just sacrifice in the cause of getting someone's tailoring over 200.

Unfortunately the only vendors in the zone who don't hate me and who will still sell to me are the human fishing vendors all the way in the SW corner of the ocean. I've checked them, but most people don't swim all the way down there to unload foams. I would assume that those that don't sell to the spell vendor or to the sisters either carry them out to Butcherblock on the boat or Gate out to wherever. The spells vendor on AC island and all of the sisters/merchants on sister island hate me. Every once and awhile I can find someone willing to check those vendors for me, but most people in the zone don't want to risk losing their camps. Maybe I should start a L1 "good" class chracter just so I can park it in OOT and check those vendors from time-to-time...

While you are fishing on the island across from Sister Isle, pay attention for people on Sister to check the two merchants there for you. If money's not really a problem, keep an illusion potion on you for buying. I was at Sister Isle last night when a shout went out that someone was paying 10 plat each for them. The merchant closest to the dock had them but was selling them for a little over 11 plat each so I just sent hem a tell to let him know.

                        Best foam hunting trip:

Puttering around in bazaar and hear an auction WTS mugs of sea foam. . .

"I'll take them ALL!" I shrieked.

                        "ALL!" was six stacks.

So I happily toted my neato necro gnomie self out to OoT with every possible pocket stuffed full of bait, and spent half a day tossing worms into the ocean to watch the cool shapes they make when they wrinkle in brine. Also to see how many types of seaweeds there were.

                        /who . . .hey, it's seafoam guy!

I used up my last baits, skellieformed a nearby seafury to death in celebration (oo a seafoam!) ambled over, bought him out of seafoams again, and gated back to Ak'Anon. By some wondrous circumstance, there were exactly enough seaweeds for the seafoams.

The blacksmith went into shock when I promised him a few sea tempers and delivered eighty-three.

Getting faction to vendor dive in OOT

                          (1) Get faction to speak to a certain NPC in Freeport - he's a dwarf. Kill Clan Crushbone (orcs) north in GFay zone. That gets you the faction to speak to NPC that gives good faction for Sisterhood wenches in OOT.

                          (2) Do the Muffin quest. Give muffins to a certain dwarf in Freeport - he's on a second floor of some Inn. This gives you faction with Sisterhood and allows you to sell and buy there. Muffins are like 5cp each or so ... and you will need around 2000 if you are KOS (as I was after killing my faction when I killed Tunare) - this is the faction work to do if you wipe Tunare factions.

If you make it to non-kos to the sisters (they are on one of the factions in kelthin, ranger guild I think), you can hand them pirate earrings, which Gornit drops every time, to raise a lot of kelthin and felwithe factions (including clerics of tunare). My shaman hit kos with a few of those factions (only emerald warriors is scowling at this time) while raising faction for cabilis quests, and turning in the earrings a few times every trip to farm the foam helps. My shaman hit 200 fishing there yesterday, that makes about 119 of the last 120 skill ups in fishing were in that zone. Thank goodness the seaweed is stackable. 7 stacks of bait get turned into just under 1 stack of seaweed at 200 fishing. And I love how Gornit picks up everyting I drop: "Only a fool drops such a thing as these, this booty is now the property of the Pirates of Gunthak!" And then I smack Gornit around and collect anywhere from 1/50th of a block of HQ ore to 2/3 of a block of HQ ore from rifling thru his pockets.

I offer folks 10p each for the foam, and most are happy to unload it at that price (which is like twice what the merchants offer). Some will hand me what they have for shaman buffs. I have not seen any foam for sale on the vendors for several months.
