  • Fine Steel Conversion Update

    It seems that the fine steel conversions have been changed with this last update, and for the better. FS rapier, long sword, scimitar and morningstar all give 2 small bricks of HQ ore instead of 1. FS spear and dagger are the same. Didn't try any other weapons yet to see if they are different. Makes it much more worth while to melt these down for smithing.

    I'll add to the list that Fine Steel Great Staff also gave me 2 small bricks of HQ. This certainly changes the economics of FS conversion if it is not a bug.

      I spent a little time in Stonebrunt tonight killing Highland Kobolds and this is what I found for fine steel weapons of oriental design. All produced High Quality ore.

      Kusarigama -> 1 small brick, 2 small pieces *
      Tonfa -> 1 small brick
      Yari -> 1 small brick
      Tanto -> 1 small brick
      Jutte -> 1 small brick **
      Naginata -> 2 small bricks, 1 small piece *
      Katana -> 2 small bricks **

      * yields that are different from the chart on the main site
      ** items not mentioned in the chart

      You can also get a wakizashi from the camp but I didn't get one to drop tonight.

      PS All were trivial at 134 smithing but I expected that.

        fs dagger = 1 small brick (same as before)

        fs two handed sword = 2 small bricks + 2 small pieces

        spear = 1 small brick + 1 small piece

        there was one combine that gave 1 small brick + 2 small pieces, but I forgot what it was; short sword I think.

          not entirely a FS conversion, but still good to know, for those who use FS to get HQore to be chanted...

          broke down a Large Enchanted Brick the other day and got 3 Small Enchanted Bricks, not one like before.

            Good for you.

            Unfortunately, I can attest that breaking down Velium still doesn't work. One of the pieces I broke down was a block, and I never got more than one piece as a result until I broke the small brick and received 2 small pieces as a result.

              I, too, was pleasantly surprised to see the enhanced fs conversion. Now if only they'll start allowing velium weapons to be converted I'll be one happy camper.

                heh, wonder what that would do to the velium market.

                wonder how loud the tailors, etc, would be crying about comparables for acrylia ('we don't have weapons we can smith down for ore!')

                but still, FS / HQore is a start.

                  Did some more hunting tonight and found the following conversion rates that are not yet listed:

                  scimitar, rapier, staff, & morning star all yield 2 small bricks

                  And to confirm Beriberi, the short sword does break down into one small brick + 2 small pieces as does the warhammer.

                  I was only able to loot a single longsword (got multiples of all the other pieces) and it was, of course, the one piece I failed the combine on. They need to add a Murphy NPC so that we can kill him repeatedly for burdening us with his law.

                    Then forget about acrylia and start doing Velious leathers instead.

                    :P

                    I think its the smiths that would be more upset. After all, they can't really use velium for much, if anything.

                      Two words: Prayer Shawl
                      The quests require making a full suit of velium armor (along with using a few pieces of velium elsewhere).

                        I've been breaking down FS in preparation for revising this section in the Edition 5 of the smithing guide. So far I have the following conversions:

                        1 small brick: dagger, jutte, tanto, tonfa, yari

                        1 small brick + 1 small piece: naginata, spear

                        1 small brick + 2 small pieces: kusarigama, short sword, warhammer, wakizashi

                        2 small bricks: great staff, katana, morning star, rapier, scimitar, tachi

                        2 small bricks + 2 small pieces: 2-handed sword

                        The jutte, katana, kusarigama, naginata, tachi, tanto, tonfa, yari, and wakizashi all drop in Stonebrunt, though I am not entirely sure off what. (I did my own experiments by purchasing player-sold weapons from the cat vendors in the kitty villlage).

                        I am in the process of determining also which are cost effective to convert and which are not, but given the improvement in the conversion rates I am guessing that fine steel weapons are all going to be cost effective to convert now.

                          The oriental weapons drop from the Highland Kobolds (the white ones) in the far north of Stonebrunt Mountains. There are two villages of them with pretty fast respawns. They are not a rare drop and the camp isn't bad for a 30ish cash camp. Not up to Hill Giant level cash but very peaceful and quiet. The zone is empty most of the time except for people passing through to Gunthak.
